Sequential output

Sequential output is basically output of a machine. When a data comprising of words/letters, numbers or
combination of both is given to the machine as an input, it rearranges them step by step following some
pattern and gives the final output. In each question an illustration is given to show how the data is rearranged
by the machine step by step. Students are required to observe the illustration carefully and identify the
pattern followed by the machine in each step. The same pattern is to be applied for answering the questions
given thereunder.
Normally, the machine follows one or more of the patterns given under.
1. Arranging the given words in alphabetical order or reverse alphabetical order.
2. Arranging the numbers in ascending/descending order.
3. Writing a particular set of words in the reverse order, stepwise.
4. Changing places of words/numbers according to a set of pattern.

Worked example 1
An electronic device rearranges numbers step by step in a particular order according to a set of rules. The
device stops when the final result is obtained. In this case the device stops at Step VI.
Input 58 61 63 36 91 79 40 90
Step I 91 58 61 63 36 79 40 90
Step II 91 90 58 61 63 36 79 40
Step III 91 90 79 58 61 63 36 40
Step IV 91 90 79 63 58 61 36 40
Step V 91 90 79 63 61 58 36 40
Step VI 91 90 79 63 61 58 40 36
Step VI is the final output

Study the above arrangement carefully and then answer the following questions.
1. Which of the following will be Step III for the input given below?

Input 11 27 18 32 34 20 19 08
(1) 34 32 27 11 18 20 19 08

(1) 12 16 03 60 55 83 89 66 68
(2) 12 83 16 89 03 66 60 55 68
(3) 83 89 66 68 12 16 03 60 55
(4) Cannot be determined

Solutions
From the illustration, we notice that the numbers have been arranged in descending order. In Step I, highest
number is brought to the first place, keeping the other numbers as they are. In Step II, second highest number
is brought to the second place. This process is continued till the entire set of numbers are arranged in
descending order.
1. Ans (1)
Input 11 27 18 32 34 20 19 08
Step I 34 11 27 18 32 20 19 08
Step II 34 32 11 27 18 20 19 08
Step III 34 32 27 11 18 20 19 08

2. Ans (1)
Input 21 14 30 32 11 10
Step I 32 21 14 30 11 10
Step II 32 30 21 14 11 10
All the numbers are arranged in descending order. So, Step II is the last step.

3. Ans (2)

Step IV 51 39 30 19 11 17
Step V 51 39 30 19 17 11
Step V is the last step

5. Ans (5)
When outcome of a step is given, it is not possible to find the position of all the numbers in its previous
step. So, the input cannot be determined.

Solutions
From the illustration, we notice the following.
In the first step, one word which comes last in the dictionary is placed at the first position and other terms are
written in the same order. In the second step the lowest number is placed in the second position.
The process continues until the words are arranged in reverse dictionary order at alternate positions and
numbers are arranged in ascending order, again at alternate position.
1. Ans (2)
