Aims and objectives

Information Technology is a one term course that surveys computer
science and information technology with emphasis on computer
business applications. The unit investigates the application of
computer technology, looking at the basics, the languages of
programming, together with the applications of computers.
Students study the theory of information processing and the possible
options for information transfer. They will be exposed to computer
concepts including terminology, communications, networking,
Internet usage, protection, ethical issues. The course incorporates the
basics of databases, data warehousing and information generation.
Work in the computer centre focuses on the commonly used software
applications, word processing, spreadsheets and database
management. Common database management systems are
introduced focusing on data analysis.
In case of online way student has to participate in the online lessons
and has to do each of the tests and requires, too.

Syllabus of Information
Technology
At the end of the unit
students will be:
- familiar with the basic principles and concepts of Information
Technology and Computer Sciences and a data management;
- trained in using computers for business purposes,

- trained in using word processors in an advanced way,

- trained in using spreadsheet programs for solving problems in
their work,
- able to make presentations using presentation software,
- trained in using database management systems;
- trained to prepare outputs from large databases for diverse
business purposes;
- trained in using MS Access for solving problems in their work;

Methodology
This subject underlines the distinctive role of lectures that will be
carried out each week during the term. These lectures intend to
transfer basic theoretical knowledge. Lectures are followed by
practice, where students are given practical knowledge, IT usage
competences and problem solving tasks regarding to information
technology.
In case of online teaching student has to connect to MS TEAMS and
participate activly (it means to do the excercises, ask and answer
teacher questions) in the online lessons by the timetable. He/she has
to resolve the necessary tasks and send them until deadline given by
the tutor. To follow by the given platform (Coospace/Moodle) the
materials given by the tutor.

Course policies
Students are expected to attend lectures and labs and carry out tasks
during practice lessons. The allowed number of unjustified absences
is maximum 20% of the lessons. With the permission of the tutor a
lesson can be replaced in another group.
In online case is the same.

Assignments
The successful presentation (prepared at home) and a simple
homepage (prepared at home) are two of the requirements of the
final assignment. In the online way, too.
Students must submit the assignments announced during the course.
Students will be assessed on 2 tests and the assignments submitted.
Same conditions are in online way.

Students are required to have two valid tests. No turn up on the
scheduled test is considered an invalid test and the student is not
entitled to have a re-sit. In case of two valid tests, should the students
not reach the above specified minimum limits in any of the elements
and 8-8 points in the theoretical test, they are entitled to take a re-sit
in the failed part.
In case of the theory test only one option is right and must be marked
for each answer in simple choice questions.
Same conditions are in online way.

Assessment and grading

Lecture is a form of tuition where either the whole spectrum of a

specific subject or part of it is presented simultaneously to all
students attending the relevant course unit, (characteristically, this
means all students or a group of students in the same year).
Attendance at lectures is an integral part of acquisition, albeit no
administrative measures can be taken for students to actually attend
them. On the other hand, assessment of student performance shall

encompass knowledge based
on lecture material.
Practical course is a form of tuition where the aim of a course unit is
to consolidate the skills aspect of acquisition. As for some course
units, lectures and practical courses have a complementary role to
play in the process of tuition.
Absence from course units whose attendance is compulsory is
acceptable up to 20 per cent of contact hours in those course units.
Absence from over fifty percent of contact hours shall lead to that unit
having to be redone to fulfil course unit requirements.
The subsequent obtaining of an end-of-semester mark/mark for
student participation and subsequent assessment following the
receipt of a ’fail’ mark is confined to two assessment days during the
examination period. An unsuccessful retake shall entail the student’s
obligation to do that course unit again.
