Engineering Mechanics (DIV- E & F)
ASSIGNMENT I

A concurrent system of forces is shown in the fig. Find the resultant passing
through the origin.

Q.1

Fig.1
The guy cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the transmission tower as
shown in fig. The tension in cable AC is 8kN. Determine the required tension T
in cable AB such that the net effects of the two cable tensions is downward force
at point A. Determine the magnitude R of this downward force.

Q.2

Fig.2
The top end of a pole is connected by three cables having tension 500N, 1500 N
and a guy wire ‘AB’ as shown in Fig. Determine tension in cable ‘AB’ if the
resultant of the concurrent force is vertical.

Q.3

Fig.3
As shown in Fig., the five coplanar forces of F1=20N, F2 =30N, F3= 40N, F4
=50N and F5=60N are acting at one of the angular point O of a regular hexagon
towards the other five angular points A, B, C, D and E respectively. Find the
magnitude R and inclination.

Q.4

Fig.4
For given system, find resultant and its point of application with respect to point
A.

Q.5

Fig.5
A dam is subjected to three forces as shown in fig. Determine the single
equivalent force and force located at its point of intersection with base AD.

Q.6

Fig.6
Replace the given force system in two parallel components at B and D.

Q.7

Fig.7
A force acts at the origin in a direction defined by the angles ø y=65º and øz=40º.
Q.8 Knowing that the x-component of the force is -750 N, determine i) the other
components ii) magnitude of force iii) the value of ø x.
A tower is held in position by three cables. Determine position (x, y) for the
cable DA so that the resultant force exerted is directed from D to O.

Q.9

Fig.9
The resultant of the three concurrent space forces at A is R =-788j N. Find
magnitude of F1,F2,F3 forces.
