Pakistan, officially the
Islamic Republic of Pakistan,
is a country in South Asia. It
is the fifth-most populous
country, with a population of
over 241.5 million, having the
second-largest Muslim
population as of 2023.
Islamabad is the nation's
capital, while Karachi is its
largest city and financial
centre.
Communication styles in Pakistan are portrayed as sign of politeness, indirectness,
respect, and an emphasis on maintaining harmony because people tend to avoid
aggressive language by using soften language.
Indirect communication style is adopted while
expressing disapproval. Formal communication style
is adopted in professional environment whereas
Informal communication style is adopted in social
environment such as family gatherings, parties and
casual meetings with friends.

But the most remarkable characteristic is one hand


on the other’s shoulders while talking, provided they
know each other well.
Non-Vebal Communication
Physical Contact:
It is common for people to be physically
affectionate with those of the same gender.

For example, men may put their arms on each


other’s shoulders and quite comfortably touch each
other.

However, public displays of affection between


opposite genders are considered to be very
inappropriate.
Hands:
There is a separation between the functions of the
hands in Pakistani culture.

This custom is tied to Islamic principles that


prescribe the left hand should be used for removal
of dirt and for cleaning. It should not be used for
functions such as waving, eating or offering items.

Therefore, one should gesture, touch people or offer


items using the right hand or both hands together.
Smiling:
Pakistanis tend to have quite a serious front and may not smile at strangers often.
Don’t expect to receive many smiles until you have gotten to know them.

Using soften language to show a sign of politeness, indirectness, respect, and an


emphasis on maintaining harmony

For non-verbal conversation


Touching with those of the same gender but it is not appropriated to touch
opposite gender.
To use right hand or both hand to do hand shaking when they greet someone but
they won’t show smiling face until you get to know them.
Conclusion

The Pakistani communication style is generally indirect.

Seeking to avoid confrontation or offence.

Conversation in groups.

One-on-one communication may be approached with trepidation.
