4.03 - Stellar Properties

The Stellar Properties Worksheet involves analyzing an HR diagram and completing a data table with information on various stars, including their luminosity, temperature, and lifetime. It highlights trends between a star's temperature and luminosity, as well as its color, while discussing outliers and the implications of a star's properties on its age and appearance. The worksheet also identifies ZL9876-1 as the star most similar to the Sun based on its characteristics.

Stellar Properties Worksheet

Directions: Analyze the HR Diagram below. Complete the data table with information from the graph. Data for
the sun is provided as a reference point. Answer the reflection questions following the completion of the data
table.

Data Table:

Luminosity Temperature Lifetime

Star Color
(# of suns) (K) (years)

Sun yellow/white 1 ~6000 1010

Ross614A red 0.00001 3000 1011

ZL9876-1 yellow 0.1 5,500 1010

Sirius Light blue 25 10,000 109

Ruchbach blue 25 15,000 106

Acamar Light blue 100 35,000 106

Reflection:
Answer the following questions using complete sentences based on your analysis of the HR diagram, the
information in the data table, and the information about stellar properties from the lesson.

1. Describe the general trend that exists between the temperature of a star and its luminosity. Give two
examples of outliers to this trend shown in the HR diagram. Explain what stellar property could cause these
to be outliers. The lower the temperature the lower the Luminosity is and the higher the temperature is, the
higher the Luminosity is. one outlier is the Arneb and the other outlier is the Betelgeuse. Some of the
properties that would make these two outliers would be mainly its luminosity, which is much higher than the
rest of the dots on the graph.

2. Describe the general trend between temperature and color. Describe the general trend between luminosity
and color. Give one example of an outlier to this trend shown in the HR diagram. The higher the
temperature the more bluish the star is. The star appears more red the lower its temperature gets. Typically,
the higher the luminosity the bluer the star. The star is more red with a lower luminosity. I think an outlier to
this trend would be the arneb it has a medium temperature what they high luminosity and its color is blue it's
also farther apart than any of the other stars.

3. What can a star's properties tell us about its age? You can tell a star’s age by its luminosity the stronger its
luminosity gets the older it becomes.

4. Which star from the table is most like our sun? Why? ZL9876-1
The star ZL9876-1 because on the graph it is the closest to matching with the sun.
ZL9876-1 yellow 0.1 5,500 1010

Sun yellow/white 1 ~6000 1010

5. Explain how a star’s mass affects its appearance. The stronger a star’s mass can cause it to become blurry.
You can also determine the cause of a star’s mass by looking at its temperature color and brightness.
