On the cold winter night of 16 December 1773, a group of American colonists approached
their British ships anchored in Boston harbor. So as not to reveal their identity, some of them
were disguised as Native Americans. (24) _____________ they boarded the vessels and located the
tea that the ships were carrying, they proceeded to empty all 342 chests into the sea, destroying
their contents forever. At the time, they may not have been aware of the far-reaching
implications of their actions.
The protest, (25) ______________ came to be known as the Boston Tea Party, had its roots in
the growing friction between the North American colonists and the British Parliament over the
question of taxation. According to the colonists, the British had no right to make them (26)
______________taxes as the colonists were not represented in
parliament. Although the colonists had been protesting against this for some time, their
voices had fallen on deaf ears. Things came to a head on 10 May 1773 when the Tea Act was
passed, which required colonists to purchase only British tea. Although cheaper than other teas,
this tea was taxed, a fact that the colonists refused to tolerate.
In New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston, the colonists had managed to persuade the
authorities to reject the tea shipments that had arrived, forcing the ships to return to Britain.

own hands. It was the tea that was the cause of their complaint, (27)____________ , so it was the

Educating Psyche by Bernie Neville is a book that looks at radical new approaches to
learning, describing the effects of emotion, imagination, and the unconscious on learning. One
theory discussed in the book is that proposed by George Lozanov, which focuses on the power of
suggestion.
Lozanov’s instructional technique is based on the evidence at the connections made in the
brain through unconscious processing (which he calls non-specific mental reactivity) are more
durable than those made through conscious processing. Besides the laboratory evidence for this,
we know from our experience that we often remember what we have perceived peripherally,
long after we have forgotten what we set out to learn. If we think of a book we studied months or
years ago, we will find it easier to recall peripheral details - the color, the binding, the typeface,
the table at the library where we sat while studying it - than the content on which we were
concentrating. If we think of a lecture we listened to with great concentration, we will recall the
lecturer's appearance and mannerisms, our place in the auditorium, and the failure of the air-
conditioning much more easily than the ideas we went to learn. Even if these peripheral details
are a bit elusive, they come back readily in hypnosis or when we relive the event imaginatively,
as in psychodrama.
The details of the content of the lecture, on the other hand, seem to have gone forever.
This phenomenon can be partly attributed to the common counterproductive approach to
study (making extreme efforts to memorize, tensing muscles, inducing fatigue), but it also simply
reflects how the brain functions. Lozanov, therefore, made indirect instruction (suggestion)
central to his teaching system. In suggestopedia, as he called his method, consciousness is
shifted away from the curriculum to focus on something peripheral. The curriculum then
becomes peripheral and is dealt with by the reserve capacity of the brain.

Surely blogging or vlogging must be one of the easiest ways of finding fame and fortune? All
you need is a computer and a hobby to talk about, don't you? Well, although it looks simple,
being a success in the blogosphere is actually a lot more difficult than it seems.
Kate Ross has been advising brands on how to work with bloggers and vloggers, and believes
that if you start a blog or vlog just to earn money, it isn't going to work. Kate says you need to be
passionate about your topic and you need to provia your readers or viewers with interesting
content. If you don't, your vlog or blog isn't going to get positive feedback and attract
subscribers.
You also need to be aware that cash isn't going to come rolling in overnight.
Seventeen-year-old Rosie Bea, who has a YouTube fashion channel, says her blog only
started attracting the attention of advertisers after she had put in months and months of unpaid
work and built up a big fan base. Rosie also combines her vlog work with her law studies, and
she advises vloggers in the same position to make sure that they plan carefully so that they have
time to do both things properly.
So, while the tabloid press often talks about the instant success of young bloggers and
vloggers, it isn't really instant at all. Successful people have done well because they are hard-
working and passionate about what they do, and this dedication and passion attract subscribers
and advertisers to them. The press is only interested in them once they are in the public eye, but
they have achieved their celebrity status through hours and hours of hard work.

on early population movements is now being obtained from the 'archaeology of the living body',
the clues to be found in genetic material.
Recent work on the problem of when people first entered the Americas is an example of the
value of these new techniques. North-east Asia and Siberia have long been accepted as the
launching ground for the first human colonizers of the New World. But was there one major
wave of migration across the Bering Strait into the Americas or several? And when did this
event, or events, take place? In recent years, new clues have come from research into genetics,
including the distribution of genetic markers in modern Native Americans2.
An important project led by the biological anthropologist Robert Williams focused on the
variants (called GM allotypes) of one particular protein - immunoglobulin G - found in the fluid
portion of human blood. All proteins 'drift' or produce variants over the generations, and
members of an interbreeding human population will share a set of such variants. Thus, by
comparing the GM allotypes of two different populations (eg., two Indian tribes), one can
establish their genetic ‘distance’, which can be calibrated to indicate the length of time since
these populations last interbred.
