Please note:

1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

problem statement/exercise/question
Preamble
Electronics is the science of how to control electric energy, in which the electrons have a fundamental
role. It deals with electronic circuits that involve active electronic components such as transistors,
diodes and integrated circuits, associated passive electronic components and interconnection
technologies. This course describes the functionalities of a number of basic electronic components
when building electronic circuits, including resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, and integrated
circuits. It enables to design and development of electronic devices and circuit for different
applications such as amplifiers, power supplies, inverters, displays etc.

PART A (10 Marks)

Preamble
In electronics, a clipper is a device designed to prevent the output of a circuit from exceeding a
predetermined voltage level without distorting the remaining part of the applied waveform. A clipping
circuit consists of linear elements like resistors and non-linear elements like junction diodes or
transistors, but it does not contain energy-storage elements like capacitors. Clipping circuits are used
to select only a part of a transmitting signal. Clippers may be classified as series and shunt clippers.
Series clippers have diode in series with the load resistance, while the Shunt clippers have diode
shunted across the load resistance.

Debate on the topic “Shunt clippers are preferred over series clippers for waveform clipping”
The debate should encompass the following:

A1.1 Comparison between shunt and series clippers

A1.2 Effect of diode type in shunt and series clippers

A1.3 Conclusion with justification of stance

PART B (4 x 10= 40 Marks)

B.1 (10 Marks)

Consider the diode circuit shown in Figure 1 and carry out the following:

Figure 1
B1.1 If input voltage is Vin = 8 V, determine the current flowing through diode (ID), output
voltage (VOut), voltage across 1.2 kΩ resistor and voltage across 4.7 kΩ.
B1.2 Simulate the given circuit using a standard software tool and plot the forward voltage
current (V-I) characteristic
B1.3 Draw the DC load line on the V-I characteristic and determine Q point of the diode.
B1.4 Comment on the value of Q point
B.2 (10 Marks)

A charger has to be designed for a smart phone based on its specifications

B2.1 Identify the specifications

B2.2 Design a suitable circuit which takes input from the available AC mains and gives
required output to charge mobile phone by using transformer and other electronic
components
B2.3 Verify the designed circuit using a standard software tool
B2.4 Discuss the specification and significance of components of the designed circuit
B.3 (10 Marks)
Input and output signal waveforms of a television receiver are shown in Figure 2.
B3.1. Design a circuit using only diode/s, resistor/s and capacitor/s to obtain shifted output
as shown in Figure 2. The square wave input having peak-to-peak voltage of 50 V and
frequency (F) are shown in Figure 2
Note: Assume frequency F of operation in the range 100 Hz – 100 kHz.
B3.2. Verify the designed circuit using a suitable simulator. Demonstrate the simulation
results
B3.3. Discuss the specifications of the components used for the design
B3.4. Comment on the result

B.4 (10 Marks)

A proper DC biasing is needed for a transistor circuit to function as an amplifier. The DC operating
point between saturation and cut-off region is called the Q-point.

Figure 3 Transistor circuit

B4.1. Find the values of VCE and IB to operate transistor in cut-off, saturation and active
regions for the circuit diagram shown in Figure 3. Assume proper resistance values for RB
and RC
B4.2. Simulate the given circuit using suitable standard software tool to get the output
characteristics. Indicate different region of operation on the characteristics
B4.3. Draw the DC load line and determine the Q-point
B4.4. Comment on the selection of Q point
