1. Introduction
In this chapter, the grade seven learner will be introduced to the basics of the English
language. The learner should acquire the basic language skills like listening and
speaking. By the end of the chapter the learner will be able to:
 Express themselves using the English language giving specific information
about themselves like their routine, hobbies and likes.
 Greet their counterparts and engage in a brief conversation.
 Count numbers from one to one hundred and write them down.
 Apply their acquired language skills to tell the time.
 Follow the alphabetical order in the dictionary usage to find new vocabulary.
 Write down information acquired from the sub topics in order to practice
their handwriting.

2. Parts of speech
In this chapter, the learner will be introduced to the eight parts of speech beginning
with nouns, articles, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and
prepositions in that order. The learner will be required to absorb all the parts of speech
and understand the inter dependency and relationship of the parts of speech in the
English language. By the end of this chapter the learner should be able to:
 Define nouns, give the types of the nouns, examples and use them to construct
grammatically correct sentences as well as use them in their daily discourse for
language practice.
 Identify the different types of articles and link their usage with the nouns.
 Define pronouns and discuss the personal pronouns giving examples in sentences.
 Define verbs, the different types of verbs and use them to construct sentences as well
as include them in their daily discourse.
 Define adjectives and explain the order of adjectives. The learner will be presented
with an adjective box in order to put the adjectives in their order.
 Define adverbs and explain different ways of forming adverbs.
 Define conjunctions and discuss the types of conjunctions and use them to join
sentences accurately.
 Define prepositions, discuss the types of prepositions and give examples of
prepositions.

 Identify the vocabulary and use the dictionary to look up new words.

1. Building vocabulary

In this chapter, the learner will be exposed to word formation of the English words using different
techniques. Their language acquisition will be reinforced by enhancing their self expression and
acquiring new vocabulary. By the end of the chapter the learner should be able to:

 Explain word formation and the four ways of word formation.


 Mention professions in the English language
 Define and differentiate antonyms and synonyms giving examples for each.
 Define homophones and give examples as well use them in both written and verbal
discourse.
 Express their feelings and emotions using abstract nouns.
 Describe the weather in detail using different parts of speech.
 Identify different colors and shapes and use them to describe classroom objects.

2. Grammar
In this chapter, the parts of speech will be revised and more detail added to
them. The learner will as well be introduced to the aspect of punctuation. By the
end of the chapter the learner should be able to:
 Use the different punctuation marks appropriately, study and explain
what incidences to use capitalization, full stops, commas, exclamation and
question marks.
 Recap the parts of speech and in this chapter the learner will be able to
differentiate the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives.
 Discuss the formation of question tags and the policies of tag formation.
 Explain linking words and give the examples in the English language.
 Identify the simple tenses and use them to construct sentences.

learners are able to identify them and classify accordingly.

4. Language practice
In this chapter, the leaner is exposed to the main language skills that is listening,
speaking and writing. By the end of the chapter the learner should be able to:
 Have market dialogue, hospital dialogue, office dialogue using the
vocubulary applicable in each of the discourse.
 Write a descriptive process like making a cup of tea using legible
handwriting and vocubulary acquired in this course.
 Write an interesting story using the mechanics of writing and describe
their families as well.
 Describe the format of a friendly letter and use it to write to their friends.
 Engage in a spelling bee challenge and dictation as a fun classroom
activity.
