Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 8 -Self-Learning Module on Conditional Statements!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in this self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 8 Self-Learning Module on Conditional Statements!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

from the entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

Upon completion of this module, you are expected to do the following.

1. Define conditional or if-then statement, hypothesis and conclusion.
2. Identify the hypothesis and conclusion of an if-then statement.
3. Write a conditional statement given the hypothesis and conclusion.
4. Understand the reasonableness of the agreement about the conditions under
𝑝 → 𝑞 which is true.

PRETEST

Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it to your answer sheet.
1. If I study hard, then I pass the examination. What do you call the underlined
portion in the statement?

A. Argument B. Conclusion C. Hypothesis D. Sentence

2. If the sum of the measures of <C and <D is equal to 90 degrees, then
____________.
A. <C and <D are complementary angles.
B. <C and <D are congruent angles.
C. <C and <D are right angles.
D. <C and <D are supplementary angles.

3. In the statement “If I stay at home, then I save lives.”, the underlined portion
is called ____________.

A. Argument B. Conclusion C. Hypothesis D. Sentence

4. Supply a valid conclusion for the given hypothesis: If m<A = 900 , then
___________.
A. <A is an acute angle.
B. <A is a right angle
C. <A is an obtuse angle.
D. <A is a reflex angle.
5. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Any four non-collinear points lie in a distinct plane.
B. A plane contains at least 3 non-collinear points.
C. Any two lines intersect at a point.
D. Through two given points we can draw 3 lines.
RECAP

Direction: Answer the questions below and write your answers in the space provided
in “IN THE BOX”.
What conclusions can you give why some students are faced with problems in
life such as a) failing grades, b) difficulties in meeting the deadlines, c) troubles with
love life?

LESSON

Let us consider one possible answer to the above question:

If I am inspired, then I study better.

This statement is an example of a conditional statement in the if-then form. A
conditional statement is an if-then statement composed of two clauses: the if-clause
which can be denoted by p and the then-clause denoted by q. The statement is in the
form, “If p, then q”. The p statement is called the hypothesis and the q statement is
called the conclusion.
In the statement “If I am inspired, then I study better”, the clause I am
inspired is the hypothesis (p) while the clause I study better is the conclusion (q).
Example: Write a conditional statement for

p: I do my homework.
q: I get my allowance.
Answer: If I do my homework, then I get my allowance.
The conditional or if-then statement could be symbolized by p → q (read as if p, then
q or p implies q). The conditional is defined to be true unless a true hypothesis leads
to a false conclusion. A truth table for p q is shown below.

p q p→q
T T T
T F F
F T T
F F T

In the truth table above, p q is only false when the hypothesis (p) is true and the
conclusion (q) is false; otherwise it is true.

Example 1: Given p: 5 is an even number.

q: 9 is odd.
Problem: What is the truth value of p q?
Solution: Since p: 5 is an even number is false and q: 9 is odd is true, then the
conditional ‘If 5 is an even number, then 9 is odd’ is true based from the truth table.
In symbol, p is false and q is true, therefore p q is true.

Example 2: Given r: 2x – 4 = 10. true

s: x = 9. false
Problem: What is the truth value of r s?
Solution: Since it is given that r is true and s is false, then the conditional r s is
false.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Direction: For each conditional, underline the hypothesis and circle the conclusion.
1. If I want to succeed in the future, then I should continue my studies.
2. I would stay healthy if I will eat fruits and vegetables regularly.
3. If a number is divisible by two, then it is even.
4. If Today is Monday, then yesterday was Sunday.
5. Frozen water implies it’s temperature is below 0℃.
Activity 2
Direction: Let p be the hypothesis and q be the conclusion, construct the
conditional statement for each of the following.
1. p: You can see the stars.
q: It is night.
2. p: You do not sleep.
q: You will be tired.
3. p: A number is divisible by 2.
q: It is even.
4. p: An angle measures 90⁰.
q: It is right.
5. p: You eat fruits and vegetables.
q: You are healthy.

Activity 3.
Direction: Write the if-then statements given the following clauses. Then indicate
its truth value.
Given:

p Vico Sotto is the mayor of Pasig City now. True

q It rains on Friday False
r The number of positive cases for covid-19 doubles every False
day.
s A right angle measures 90⁰. True

1. p q
2. p s
3. r q
4. r s
5. q r
