Historical Consciousness

A reflective paper

Through the very fabric of time, consciousness has affected all spheres of human life and its subsequent
progression. Historical consciousness is one such sphere whose origins and growth can be observed in
the distant past and serves as our window into the beliefs and thoughts of people from an era gone by.

Our earliest signs of consciousness in history, where people have made records if scarce are mythical
and fable in origin. Though, this is highly understandable as the concept of nations, sovereignty and
boundaries is a fairly recent one. Previously throughout the course of history; violence, wars and chaos
has been a distinct hallmark which would have prompted to recollection of tales or stories whether
fictional or real that depict good times to give people hope. It is to be noted that the old historical
consciousness was to tell tales of beauty and hope and peace in a world which was disturbingly violent
and utterly traumatizing.

The establishment of the Greek Empire and the intellectual works of its thinkers and philosophers shows
the most marked progression in historical consciousness in ancient times. The Greeks took it on
themselves to divide history from myths and fables on the mere principal of reason and authentication
to check the varsity of facts. During the same time period, marked historical consciousness was shown
by the Jews and the newly converted christians. The earlier linked their history as a form of connection
to God and as a form of finding more meaning, whereas the later used religion as a basis to form history
from the beginning of time and form arguments on it rationally. This period can be signified as the era of
the beginning of the secular historical consciousness views.

With the developments of languages and incorporation of scripts and records into daily formal
proceedings, historical consciousness was well recorded in the middle ages. It is during the midele ages
that in light of history different contemporary views begin forming regarding the political and realistic
philosophies and problems of man through history. This as a result gave birth to mamy philosophers and
historians such as collins but perhaps the most significant philosopher of recent times and end of middle
ages was Karl Marx, who brought forward theories based on realism rather than idealism to decrease
class difference and promise a good life for all men.

In modern times, wars have been well documented but so has been human consciousness and ideas.
Political, economic and life thoughts and views are published in papers and are available on the
electronic media as well leading to great glossary of historical consciousness in modern era unlike the
past. A good example is also the scientific progresses, instead of being lost or forgotten history, each
scientific discovery is globally renowned and well documented.

Overall, consciousness has had a distinct journey throughout history, it was in origin the promise of a
beautiful dream which got differentiated into truth, fiction and religion later. During the middle ages, it
shows and encompasses what man was able to devise and learn from history to bring forth progressive
views and greater critical analysis. The modern era is most diverse in historical consciousness as nearly
all of it has been recorded, therefore in recent history, consciousness aside from religion and wars is
witnessed as well in social sciences, arts, politics, justice and philosophy itself.
