BAB 1.4 INTERPRET READINGS OF MEASUREMENT TOOLS (student)

The document provides instructions on how to interpret readings from Vernier calipers and micrometer screw gauges, including exercises on calculating total readings and identifying zero errors. It emphasizes the importance of checking for zero errors and positioning the eyes correctly to avoid parallax errors. Additionally, it outlines methods to minimize measurement errors for both instruments.

Exercise: Vernier Caliper without zero error

Main scale = 8.6 cm Main scale = 0.0 cm

Vernier scale = 0.02 cm Vernier scale = 0.06 cm
Total reading = 8.6 cm + 0.02 cm Total reading = 0.0 cm + 0.06 cm
= 8.62 cm = 0.06 cm

Exercise: Vernier Caliper without zero error

Main scale = 6.4 cm Main scale = 1.0 cm

Vernier scale = 0.03 cm Vernier scale = 0.06 cm
Total reading = 6.4 cm + 0.03 cm Total reading = 1.0 cm + 0.06 cm
= 6.43 cm = 1.06 cm

Exercise: What is zero error of the Vernier Caliper

Zero error = -0.06 cm Zero error = +0.06 cm Zero error = -0.04 cm

Zero error = +0.03 cm Zero error = -0.03 cm Zero error = +0.10 cm 9

Exercise: Vernier Caliper with zero error
Main scale = 1.0 cm
Vernier scale = 0.05 cm
Zero error = +0.04 cm
Total reading = 1.0 cm + 0.05 cm – 0.04 cm
= 1.01 cm

Main scale = 1.3 cm

Vernier scale = 0.03 cm
Zero error = -0.07 cm
Total reading = 1.3 cm + 0.03 cm – (-0.07 cm)
= 1.40 cm

10
Exercise: Vernier Caliper with zero error
Main scale = 0.1 cm
Vernier scale = 0.09 cm
Zero error = -0.08 cm
Total reading = 0.1 cm + 0.09 cm – (-0.08 cm)
= 0.27 cm

Main scale = 0.4 cm

Vernier scale = 0.10 cm
Zero error = +0.03 cm
Total reading = 0.4 cm + 0.10 cm – (0.03 cm)
= 0.47 cm

Main scale = 23.5 mm

Vernier scale = 0.49 mm
Total reading = 23.5 mm + 0.49 mm
= 23.99 mm

Exercise: Micrometer with no zero error
Main scale = 0.5 mm
Timble scale = 0.00 mm
Total reading = 0.5 mm + 0.00 mm
= 0.5 mm

Main scale = 5.5 mm

Timble scale = 0.00 mm
Total reading = 5.5 mm + 0.00 mm
= 5.5 mm

Zero error = -0.03 mm Zero error = -0.06 mm 17

Exercise: Micrometer with zero error
Main scale = 15.0 mm
Timble scale = 0.14 mm
Total reading = 15.0 mm + 0.14 mm – 0.23 mm
= 14.91 mm

Main scale = 3.5 mm

Timble scale = 0.30 mm
Total reading = 3.5 mm + 0.30 mm – (-0.47 mm)
= 4.27 mm

18

SUMMARY
Instrument Precision How to minimize error when using this instrument?
Position your eyes directly above the markings to avoid parallax errors.

Ruler 1mm Do not start measuring an object from a 0 mark at the end of the ruler as the mark may be
inaccurate due to wear and tear. Instead, measure from some randomly chosen point and
subtract it from the final reading

Position your eyes directly above the markings to avoid parallax errors.

Check for 0 errors before measuring with the Vernier calipers. If the 0 mark on the main
Vernier
0.1mm scale and the Vernier scale coincides, there is no zero error. If the 0 mark on the Vernier
Calipers
scale is slightly to the right, there is a positive zero error and the positive zero error should
be subtracted from the reading. If the 0 mark on the Vernier scale is slightly to the left,
there is a negative 0 error and the zero error should be added to the reading.

Position your eyes directly above the markings to avoid parallax errors.

Check for 0 errors before measuring with micrometer screw gauge. If the 0 mark on main
Micrometer scale and the thimble scale coincides, there is no zero error. If the 0 mark on the thimble
0.01mm scale is slightly to the left of the datum line, there is a positive zero error and the positive
screw gauge
zero error should be subtracted from the reading. If the 0 mark on the thimble scale is
slightly to the left of the right line, there is a negative 0 error and the zero error should be 20
added to the reading.
