3RD SEMESTER – POLITICAL SCIENCE - NARENDRA DEV’S VIEWS ON

SOCIALISM.

Q. DISCUSS THE NARENDRA DEV’S VIEWS ON SOCIALISM.

Acharya Narendra Dev, a prominent Indian political leader, thinker, and a founding
figure of the Socialist movement in India, played a significant role in shaping the
principles of socialism in the country. His views on socialism were deeply rooted in
Indian cultural values and aimed at addressing the socio-economic disparities in Indian
society. Here are the key aspects of his views:

1. Socialism as a Means to Social Justice

 Narendra Dev believed socialism was essential for establishing social and
economic justice in a deeply stratified society like India.
 He emphasized eliminating economic inequalities and uplifting marginalized
sections of society, including workers, peasants, and Dalits.

2. Indianization of Socialism

 Unlike many Western socialist ideologies, Narendra Dev argued for a socialism
that was adapted to Indian realities and traditions.
 He emphasized the integration of Gandhian principles of non-violence with
socialist ideals, advocating for a peaceful and democratic transition to a socialist
society.

3. Focus on Agrarian Reform

 A major proponent of land reforms, he sought to address the plight of Indian

peasants who were often subjected to exploitation by landlords.
 He called for the abolition of the zamindari system and redistribution of land to
the tillers.

4. Democratic Socialism

 Narendra Dev believed in achieving socialism through democratic means,

rejecting violent revolution.
 He stressed the importance of democracy and individual freedoms within a
socialist framework.

5. Nationalism and Socialism

 He saw socialism as complementary to the Indian nationalist movement. For

him, true independence meant not only political freedom from colonial rule but
also economic and social emancipation.

6. Internationalism
 While rooted in Indian traditions, his socialism was global in outlook. He
supported international solidarity among oppressed nations and working-class
movements worldwide.

7. Critique of Capitalism

 Narendra Dev was a vocal critic of capitalism, which he believed fostered

exploitation and widened economic disparities.
 He proposed a system of cooperative and public ownership to replace the
capitalist mode of production.

Legacy

Acharya Narendra Dev's socialism has left a lasting impact on the Indian socialist
movement. His ideas laid the foundation for organizations like the Praja Socialist
Party and influenced leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia. His vision of a just, equitable,
and democratic society remains relevant in discussions of socio-economic reforms in
India.
