Housing

information
for exchange
students

As an exchange student of an Erasmus+ or Overseas program, you have priority access to a

room in one of the student dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart (SWS), one of the
university’s housing providers.

As it is close to impossible to find private accommodation in Stuttgart, we strongly recommend

that you register for a dormitory room in one of the student halls on campus, once we advise
you to do so. Please consider that we are not in a position to support you in finding
accommodation on the private market, should you refrain from registering for a dorm room!

You will receive a single room with shared facilities (kitchen, bathroom). The rent ranges
between EUR 285 and EUR 395 per month. We do not have any influence concerning the
location or the exact price category of the allocated rooms as rooms are solely managed by the
SWS.

According to the regulations of the SWS, students are required to book a minimum rental
period of 5/6 or 11/12 months (see below).

The starting date depends on whether you registered for our intensive German course (IGC) via
Mobility-Online, or not. The IGC is taking place in March/September. Contracts start only at the
beginning of a month.

Application procedure:
The International Office assumes you are interested in renting a room in a dorm of the SWS. If
not, please let us know!

1) The International Office will inform the SWS about all students who are part of an exchange
program and who have priority access to one of the dormitories. Furthermore, we will inform
them about your expected moving-in date and duration of stay, according to your registration
for the IGC via Mobility-Online and the number of semesters you have been nominated for by
your home university.

2) The International Office contacts you once you can start registering for a dorm via the
website of the SWS (via Mobility-Online).

Please apply for a dorm for a winter semester until June 15

 from September 1 to February 28 (6 months: IGC in September + winter semester)
 from October 1 to February 28 (5 months: only winter semester)
 Students who will stay for two semesters will receive a rental contract until August 31

Please apply for a dorm for a summer semester until December 15

 from March, 1 to August, 31 (6 months: IGC in March + summer semester)
 from April, 1 to August, 31 (5 months: only summer semester)
 Students who will stay for two semesters will receive a rental contract until February 28

will be required to transfer a deposit of EUR 700 in advance (which involves EUR 300 as part of
your first month’s rent). Otherwise, your dorm room will be cancelled.

Please note: Keep the International Office updated about any potential changes in your plans
concerning your exchange semester.
