Parent Letter Home

Greetings Parents,

The quarter is off to a quick start as we are preparing to get your sons and daughters behind the
wheel! I am sending this letter home with a few items to provide clarification on. Feel free to email me with
any questions you may have in regards to the permit/licensing process!

Sincerely,
Logan Hohl

Permit Process
1. Must pass the permit test
a. Students receive 3 attempts with their teacher.
i. After the 3rd attempt, the student must travel to the local DMV and pay a $20 fee to
gain an additional 3 attempts.
b. Rules of the Road books are handed out during the first day of class. These must be read
before the test is taken. (approximately 2 weeks to read)
i. Practice questions are available for each chapter.
2. Must pass the vision test
a. A date will be assigned for the nurse to come in and test the student’s vision.
b. If your son/daughter already has glasses, make sure they wear them for their test.
c. If your son/daughter fails to pass the vision test, they must arrange an appointment with an
eye doctor to receive prescription eyeglasses. They will be re-tested once they have their
glasses
i. If you would like your current eye doctor to perform the vision test, you must
provide the vision request form. I can provide these to any students who request
them.
3. Must have the necessary paperwork
a. After the test has been successfully completed, all students must acquire the following
documents from their teacher.
i. Permit Application: This application is filled out online. You should receive a step-
by-step document that will show you where to fill the application out at online
during the first week of school. The application must be filled out before the permit
test has been taken.
ii. Permit Letter: Every student must have a permit letter with the school’s letterhead
attached in order to be eligible to get his/her permit from the DMV. This contains
my signature, the date, confirmed passing of the permit test and vision test, and a
list of items that will be required for the trip to the DMV.
4. Additional Items for the permit
a. Social Security Card
b. Birth Certificate
c. Proof of Residency (Example: Report Card, Mailing Address, Bank Statement, etc)
5. Be sure to check with your local DMV for their hours of availability.
6. Students may not receive their permits until they turn 15. Even though they have passed the test,
they are not eligible until they are 15 years old.

Permit Information
1. Once your son/daughter has received their permit, they must acquire 50 total hours of driving time.
a. 10 must be at night.
2. Permit Restrictions - Reference your Rules of the Road booklet for additional information on Permit
Restrictions. See the link below to access the Rules of the Road.

3. The permit must also be in hand for a total of 9 months. If you decide to hold off on getting the
permit once a student turns 15, they will not be eligible to receive their license until they have
completed the 9 month timeframe. (May wait up to 3 months before the timeframe extends beyond
their 16th birthday)
4. Students must also complete the “Behind the Wheel” portion within one year of passing the class.
Take this into consideration when getting your permits.

Behind the Wheel

1. All students must complete the Behind the Wheel portion of driver’s education to be eligible for their
license. They must acquire 6 hours of driving time with an instructor. Driving time will take place
during their study hall or physical education class.

3. Permits must be on hand for each driving session.

Getting Your License

1. Once the classroom portion, Behind the Wheel, and driving hours have been completed, the student
will be eligible to apply for their license once they are 16.
2. No paperwork is needed from the school at this time. All students are submitted online via the ISBE
website by his/her teacher.
3. Students who receive an A or B in driver’s ed will be eligible to take their driving test with their
instructor. Students who pass will not have to take their test at the DMV. These student will receive
their test along with signatures from their classroom teacher and behind the wheel instructor. Each
student only receives one of these tests, so it is imperative that the test is not lost or damaged.
