addition

Addition is the mathematical operation of combining numbers to obtain a sum, involving terms such as addends and the sum itself. Key properties of addition include the commutative, associative, and identity properties, along with various strategies for performing addition like counting on and using a number line. The document also includes practice problems to reinforce understanding of addition.

### **Addition Reviewer**

#### **What is Addition?**

Addition is the mathematical operation of **combining two or more

numbers to get a sum**. It is one of the basic arithmetic operations.

#### **Addition Terms:**

- **Addends** – The numbers being added (e.g., 5 + 3 → 5 and 3 are

addends).

- **Sum** – The result of addition (e.g., 5 + 3 = 8, so 8 is the sum).

- **Plus (+) Sign** – The symbol used for addition.

### **Basic Addition Facts**

1. **Commutative Property** – Changing the order of addends does not

change the sum.

- Example: **4 + 2 = 2 + 4**

2. **Associative Property** – Grouping addends in different ways does not

change the sum.

- Example: **(3 + 4) + 5 = 3 + (4 + 5)**

3. **Identity Property** – Adding zero to any number gives the same

number.

- Example: **7 + 0 = 7**

4. **Doubling Strategy** – When adding the same number to itself,

multiply by 2.

- Example: **6 + 6 = 12**

### **Addition Strategies**

- **Counting On** – Start with a number and count forward.

- **Using a Number Line** – Jump forward to find the sum.

- **Breaking Apart (Decomposing Numbers)** – Split numbers into easier
parts.

- Example: **47 + 35 → (40 + 30) + (7 + 5) = 70 + 12 = 82**

- **Column Method (Regrouping or Carrying)** – Used for multi-digit

numbers.

- Example:

```
27
+ 45
-----
72
```

- **Estimation** – Round numbers to estimate sums quickly.

### **Practice Problems:**

1. 23 + 56 = ?

2. 189 + 347 = ?

3. A box has 48 apples, and another has 29 apples. How many apples in
total?
