NOTES ON DIASTER MANAGEMENT

NATIONAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY


 58.6% of India is prone to earthquakes. Over 40% of land prone to floods and
river erosion. 5700m out of 7516 kms of coastline prone to cyclones and Tsunamis.
68% of cultivable land prone to droughts.
 23 dec 2005, Disaster Management Act was enacted. Created NDMA headed by
Prime Minister.

Organisation of NDMA
 National executive Committee : Assists NDMA in discharge of its functions
and also ensure compliance of directions of central government. Prepares national
Plan for disaster management. Monitor implementation of guidelines issued by
NDMA.
 State Disaster Management Authority. Headed by CM. Lays down policy for
management in state. State Executive Committee (SEC) is constitutes to assist
SDMA in performance of its functions. Headed by Chief Secretary. Also provides
information to NDMA
 District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Headed by DC/DM/Dpty
Commissioner
 Local Authorities : Panchayathi raj Institutions, Municiplalities, District and
Cantonment Boards, Town Planning Authorities etc

NATIONAL DISASTER RESPONSE FORCE


 Controlled by NDMA
 Four Battalions of NDRF equipped and trained to respond to Chemical, Biological,
Radiological and Nuclear(CBRN) emergencies.

 Water Related . Floods/Flash floods, Cloudburst, Excessive rains, Drought

 Contamination/ Poisoning
 Terrorist activities
 Ecological like pollution, warming sea levels, toxic wastes etc
