Notes to Teachers/Parents:
The contents of this preschooi phonics programme have been carefully
rvritten to ensure children experience success in learning to read and write.
The contents of the lcrur readers are as follows:

Reader 1 : the sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet

Reader 2 : \,vords endingwith an" at, ap, am, ag, et, en, ed, eg, in,
og, 0p, ot, uh, up and ug
Reader 3 words r,vith initial consonant blends cl, fl, pl, cr, dr. fr,
pr, st; r,vords rvith final consonant blends st, ft, mp, sk,
It, nd, nt, lk; r'vords r,vith digraphs (combinations of two
letters that represent one speech sound) ck, nk, ng, ch,
fh, sh; words r,vith final double consonants ll, ss
Reader 4 words rvith long vor'vel sounds ee, ea, ai, ay, oa, silent e;
words rvith the oo. or. all. ar sourtcls: rvords rvith diphthongs
(volvel blends; two vowels, each of r,vhich contributes to
the sound heard) oi, cly, otrY, tlu.

Children should learn and recognise the names and sounds of the 26
ietters of the alphabet first before they proceed to learn the sounds of the
letter combinations in Readcrs 2 to 4. The varied and interesting activities in
the activity and enrichment books provide ample opportunities for children to
develop and sirengthen their reading and writing skills.

As a general guide in using the readers, children's attention should be


brought to the boxed letter or letter combinations (e.g.l-a_l , [6] , an , Epl,
cl fl E lZi-]. Say the sound the letter or letter combination makes
"tnt.
and get the children to repeat after you. Then point to the pictures and say
out the words, emphasizing the letter sound to be learnt. Then encourage the
children to talk about the pictures. For Readers 2 to 4, once the children have
learnt the sound of each ietter combination, get the children to repeat after you
the phrases or sentences on the following page.

A progress ohart has been included on the inside back cover to enable
the children's progress to be monitored.
