Activity 1.

1. Watch a video or a movie conducting a class with special education.

Answer the following questions:

1. Compare the number of students from a special to normal class

I watched the movie entitled “like stars on earth” where the teacher named

Ram Shankar Nikumbh conducted a special class for Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi an

eight year old dyslexic boy. Ishaan is the only child in class who suffers in dyslexia.

There is also one child named Rajan Damodaran, a physically disabled boy but he is

one of the top students so that he do not need to be included in the special class. The

rest of the class perform well and able to grasp the concepts easily except from

Ishaan.

2. What exceptionalities had been shown by the video or movie?

The exceptionalities shown by the movie is the condition of having a dyslexia.

As defined by Oxford dictionary, dyslexia is a disorder that involve difficulty in

learning to read or interpret words, letters and other symbols, but that do not affect

general intelligence. But, despite of having a dyslexia Ishaan has a hidden talent in

arts. He is very imaginative, creative, and very good in arts and painting. He is able to

solve problems in a very different way and create unique things. He is very different

from the other children in the school because he see things in a very different way.

3. What qualities of a teacher has been shown? And why?

Ram Shankar Nikumbh, the instructor who change the life of Ishaan. Nikumbh

is a highly optimistic teacher, maybe because he is a former teacher in Tulips School

for young children with developmental disabilities before he joins the boarding

school. He is an art teacher and his teaching style is very different from the other
teacher. He observed every students if they are participating and happy with the

activities that is why he quickly notice that Ishaan is unhappy during the class. And,

instead of leaving Ishaan alone and scold him for not participating and not doing the

activities, Nikumbh investigate to understand why Ishaan is acting that way. He

reviews Ishaan's work and concludes that his academic shortcomings are indicative of

dyslexia. Nikumbh then visits the family of Ishaan in Mumbai, where he is surprised

to discover Ishaan's hidden interest in art. He demonstrates to the family how Ishaan

has extreme difficulty in understanding letters and words due to dyslexia, and his

poverty in sports skills stems from his poor motor ability. Back to the school

Nikumbh comfort Ishaan by telling his own struggles when he was a child with

dyslexia and inspire him by telling how he conquered everything and become a

successful teacher. Nikumbh ask the principal’s permission to be Ishaan’s tutor.

Together with gradual care, patience, and remedial techniques Ishaan’s condition

improve.

Nikumbh as a teacher shows patience, love, care, concern, optimism, and dedication

in teaching. Compare to other teacher he is concern not just to the academics but also

to the emotional health of the child. He see every child as unique individuals.

Nikumbh shows this qualities of the teacher because this is the qualities that a teacher

should have. For me teacher’s role is not just imparting knowledge but also they

should be able to show concern, love, care, and empathy to every students to make

sure that everyone is learning and no one is left behind. Every child has a struggle and

sometimes even parents don’t know that it is happening to their children so that, it is

the duty of the teacher to analyze the situation. And, it is very important for a teacher

to understand the child’s condition in order to develop remedial techniques especial

for the child.

4. Enumerate as many as you can the safety rules on conducting special class.

 Avoid putting tables with sharp edges

 Avoid putting toys and other materials with small parts that may cause

choking

 Inform the special class about the do’s and don’ts before, during, and after

class

 Forbid running, and jostle around the classroom

 Be hands on in teaching

 Put signs of enter and exit in every doors

 Keep sharp, pointed, and heavy materials away from the class

 Keep hazardous chemicals away from the class

Activity 4: The Real Special Child

Look for any special child in your community. Prepare for a proper informal

interviews. Ask permission whether they could be interview regarding the given case. Show

respect to the family while conducting the interview. If given the permission. Ask the

following.

1. How old is the child? His/her gender.

The child is a 14 year old male.

2. How did they know that the child is special?

The child 2 years old and 6 months when the family discovered that he is

special. The family start wondering about the child’s condition when he do not react

to any sound. The family consulted a doctor and the child is diagnosed that he has a

hearing problem. But, the child has a chance of hearing with the use hearing aid but

the family is short financially that is why they are not able to provide the hearing aid.

3. What caring techniques did the parents provide?

After they discovered that the child has a hearing problem, they develop

simple hand signals to communicate and guide the child. Like for example hand

signals that indicates eating, drinking, pointing objects, and saying no or yes. They

give much patience and love to the child to meet his needs and make him feel loved

and cared. When the child gets older the family realize that they need to enroll the

child in special education. They enrolled him in Pilot Elementary school that conducts

special education. Now, the child is currently in grade 4 and already learned about the

basic hand signals for the alphabet and gestures.

4. What personality traits could you recommend if you are a teacher?

If I am the teacher I will recommend patience, understanding, and dedication

as a personality traits when dealing with special child because there is the term special

meaning they need more attention, guidance and care. Compare to normal children or

students they learn things very different, and some of them learn slow so that,

patience is very important because teachers need to create remedial techniques and

modify every teaching strategies and that takes a lot of time. Being understanding is

very important trait of a teacher because if the teacher understand the condition or

situation of the child it will be easier for him to create and provide solutions to help

the child to learn. And last, being dedicated to teaching as profession. Teachers love

their students because they are dedicated, and being dedicated means they are ready to

take risk, make sacrifice, and endure the hardships of being a teacher. Dedication keep

them motivated and not give up.

5. Ask permission for photo documentation if the child willing to take photos.

6. What noticeable skills, capabilities, had been shown even the child is special?

Even the child has a hearing problem he is able to make household chores, like

cooking, and washing dishes. He is also good in arts like drawing. He is able to help

his father in hollow blocks making. And, he is also good playing basketball. Another

important thing is that the child is able to socialize and confident.
