Adjective Adverb

He is a carful driver. He drives carefully.


The exercise is easy. We can do the exercise easily.
The music is too loud. They are singing very loudly.
. I am terribly sorry.
She was badly hurt.
The test was extremely hard.

Ein Adjektiv bezieht sich auf ein Ein Adverb bezieht sich auf ein Verb,
Hauptwort auf ein Adjektiv oder ein anderes Adverb

“Wie ist etwas/jemand ?“ “Wie wird etwas gemacht ?“

Adverb:
Form: adjective + -ly
e.g. bad - badly
nice - nicely
happy - happily
dangerous – dangerously
terrible - terribly
true -truly
Exceptions:
 adjectives ending in -ly
e.g. friendly - in a friendly way
silly - in a silly way
 fast - fast
 good – well
 early - early
 daily - daily
 hard - hard ( schwer, sehr ) I’m studying hard.
- hardly (kaum) I hardly recognised him.
 near - near (nahe) Don’t go near the panther.
- nearly (beinahe) I nearly failed the driving test.
 late - late (spät) They arrived rather late.
- lately (in letzter Zeit) She hasn’t gone out much lately.
 high - high (hoch) This time he is flying too high.
- highly (höchst) This story is highly unrealistic.

After some verbs we always use adjectives:


be, feel, become, get (werden), turn (werden) , seem, smell, taste, sound, look ( aussehen),
e.g.: I feel horrible today. The problem seems serious to me. The milk has turned sour.
His suggestion sounds good to me .
Sue looks very angry. Sie sieht zornig aus
But: Sue looks at me angrily.

Comment or viewpoint adverbs


Diese Adverbien beziehen sich auf den ganzen Satz.
Personally, I don’t think that he stole the money.
They had obviously left the dog behind.
Generally speaking, people should be more careful when sharing information on the internet.
Comparison of adjectives and adverbs
1)For one-syllable adjectives
and for two-syllable adjectives ending in -y, -le, -er, -ow: -er, -est

long -longer - longest


hot - hotter -hottest
easy - easier - easiest
simple - simpler - simplest

2) For other two-syllable or longer adjectives: more , most


stupid - more stupid - most stupid
exciting - more exciting - most exciting

3) For all adverbs: more , most


easily - more easily - most easily
carefully - more carefully - most carefully

4) Exceptions: good/well - better - best


bad/badly - worse - worst
little - less - least
many/much - more - most
old - older - oldest
- elder - eldest (for family members: my elder brother, his eldest sister)
far - farther - farthest
- further - furthest (‘ weiter’ im übertragenen Sinn, e.g. further
information, further detail )

5) Usage:
The cassette costs as much as the CD.
The film was not as interesting as I had expected.
He has to work as hard as his boss.

This test is easier than the last one. This test was less difficult than the last one.
You have to work more carefully next time.
He took my advice more seriously than I thought.

That was the worst performance I have ever seen.


How can we use energy most effectively.
This was the most dangerous moment during our whole journey.
