CHAPTER VI

UNIFORMS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE

010. APPEARANCE AND PRIDE

As a midshipman at Maine Maritime Academy, your appearance must reflect pride and
professionalism. Wearing of the uniform and conforming to standards set by students, staff, and
faculty, meets stated preferences of alumni, industry, and those individuals who place great value
on the Maine Maritime Academy graduate. As a Midshipman you shall wear the uniform
prescribed, and maintains a high standard of hygiene, uniform cleanliness and neatness.

.01 Midshipmen at Work

Midshipmen who are paid by the Academy to work on campus are considered to still be
midshipmen of the Academy and to be in an official capacity as they perform their tasks,
no matter what time of the year. Accordingly, their conduct and appearance is still
governed by midshipmen regulations.

Thus, midshipmen on work-study such as Academy drivers, facility supervisors, watch

standers, sailing loft supervisors, summer conferences, etc. are to be in the uniform
appropriate to the nature of the work required. This includes being clean-shaven and
having hair cut to the proper length. The Commandant must approve exceptions for unique
work requirements. “Civilian” attire is not a uniform.

.02 Midshipmen in Athletics

Midshipmen who participate in sailing for the Academy any time during the year (summer
included) or return early to play sports are still considered to be midshipmen of the
Academy and to be in an official capacity as they perform their tasks. Accordingly, their
conduct, uniform and personal appearance is governed by midshipman regulations. This
includes being clean-shaven and having hair cut to the proper length. There are no special
allowances for sailing or athletics.

.03 Summer School

Leisure uniform is appropriate for class with either khaki trousers or khaki shorts. Both are
to be worn with the khaki web belt and shined brass. Midshipmen must be clean-shaven
and have regimental haircuts.

.04 Summer Maintenance

Deck and engine maintenance will be in the maintenance uniform. Navy Blue boiler suits
are authorized for wear on the ship only. Navy blue boiler suits are not authorized to be
worn off the waterfront complex. This means they are not authorized in any Castine stores

VI-1
or banks. When on the Mess Deck, khakis, relaxed or clean maintenance uniforms are
authorized. No boiler suits, or dirty maintenance uniforms are allowed on the mess decks
during the summer maintenance periods or during the academic year. Appropriate civilian
attire may be worn during the evening meal during the summer periods and for certain class
privileges during the academic year.

020. UNIFORM BOARD

Recommendations for uniform or uniform item changes, additions or deletions to the Regimental
uniforms will be submitted in writing, along with a full explanation and any supporting evidence
to the Uniform Board to consider action on any such recommendations.

The Chairperson will submit the committee’s recommendations to the Commandant for
approval.

The Maine Maritime Academy Regimental Uniform Board shall be made up of the following:

• Staff officer of the Commandant’s Department, who will chair the Board (normally the
Assistant Commandant).

• Member of the Regimental Staff.

• One member from each class.

• Representative from the MMA Bookstore, who will not be a voting member, but will
be utilized as an expert advisor on any recommendation to the addition or deletions of
the Regimental uniform or uniform items.

030. UNIFORM AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

The quantities of uniforms and equipment specified in this article represent minimum
requirements. Each midshipman is responsible to assess his or her own needs and may procure

to maintain these minimums.

constitution of the “leisure” uniform. This policy allows the membership of certain

yet similar in appearance.

All students in approved organizations may elect to wear the modified uniform when

various reasons are considered unserviceable and will not be worn with this uniform, or
any other uniform.

Any variations of the policy must be approved by the Commandant’s Office. The various
student teams and organizations are responsible for the acquisition and distribution of the
items after approval, and for the monitoring of membership eligibility. Violations of this
policy will result in the withdrawing of the privilege from the entire membership of the
organization.
