Electrical Circuits
 Introduction
 Concept of electrical circuit

Chapter # 01 

Components/Elements of electrical circuit
Energy dissipated in resistor
Outline  Energy stored in capacitor or inductor
 Voltage and Current Sources
 Power flow within a circuit
Motivation

 Now a days we see lot of Electrical circuits

everywhere, some are simple, and some are
very complex.
 Electrical circuits are everywhere, from tiny
ones in integrated circuits in mobile phones
and music players, to giant ones that carry
power to our homes.
What is an electrical circuit?

 An Electric Circuit

 A path or line through which an electrical current flows

 The conductive path for flow of current or electricity
 A collection of circuit elements that have been connected to achieve a specified
goal
Simple electrical
Circuit
 simple electrical circuit
includes:

 cell (source)

 switch (controller)

 load (power consumer)

 wires (connectors)
Complex Circuit (internal structure of an
Op-Amp)
Electrical circuit consists of

 Source that delivers power in the circuit, like battery, generator …etc
 Load that consumes power in the circuit, like lamp, refrigerator …etc
 Wires that interconnect source and load so that power could be transmitted
from source to load.
Classification of Electrical circuit

 According to its power supply

 DC circuit
 AC circuit
 According to the connection of components
 Series circuit
 Parallel circuit
 Combination of series and parallel (complex circuit)
Circuit categorized according to type of
power supply

 A direct-current circuit carries current that flows only in one direction

 An alternating-current circuit carries current that pulsates back and forth

many times each second
Circuit categorized according to the
connection of components

A series circuit comprises a path along A parallel circuit comprises branches

which the whole current flows through so that the current divides and only
each component part of it flows through any branch
Representation of electrical circuit

 There are many types of drawings through which Electricians, engineers and
architects represent an electrical circuit

 Each drawing is different and uses symbols to represent the circuit

 Engineers use “Circuit diagram” or “line diagram” to understand and analyze

a circuit

 Electricians use “wiring diagram” or “ladder diagram” to understand a circuit

 Architects use “pictorial diagram”

Symbols used for
circuit
representation
