In recent years, having police officers in American schools has become a big debate. Some people
think it makes schools safer, while others say it creates problems, especially for Black and minority
students. This discussion looks at both sides of having school resource officers (SROs) in schools
and whether they should stay or be replaced by other solutions.
The main argument for having police in schools is that they help reduce violence and keep students
safe. Many schools have had SROs for years, and their job is to protect students and stop bad
situations from getting worse. Supporters say these officers are trained to solve problems without
using force. According to a 2021 survey, a majority of Americans feel that SROs make schools
safer, though opinions are different among races, with white Americans agreeing more than Black
Americans.
But there are also strong arguments against police in schools. Many students of color, especially
Black students, say they feel more scared and uncomfortable around SROs. They say that police are
more likely to arrest or punish them unfairly. For example, some student groups in North Carolina
want to replace police with counselors who can support students emotionally. Also, Kamala Harris,
a famous politician, suggested in 2019 to remove police from schools.
Some people think that putting more officers in schools will not stop mass shootings. They say the
real problem is that guns are too easy to get in the United States. For instance, a school shooting in
Georgia showed that the shooter got his gun from his father, who is now facing charges. Some
leaders, like Ron DeSantis, suggest hiring retired military officers as school guards, but many
believe this could be risky as these veterans might be dealing with trauma themselves.
To conclude, the question of police in schools is complicated. Supporters think SROs keep students
safe, while opponents say they hurt the school environment, especially for minorities. Finding the
right balance between security and making students feel comfortable is important. Maybe the
solution is to have both police and mental health support, so all students feel safe and included in
school.
