7 Things Every Parent Should Know About

Private Tutoring

DALL·E 2023-01-24 21.00.38As a parent, you

want the best for your child. You want them to
succeed in school and in life. One way to help
them achieve their goals is by investing in private
tutoring. Private tutoring offers many benefits
that can help your child excel academically, boost
their confidence and develop critical thinking
skills.

But, with so many tutors and programs to

choose from, it can be overwhelming to know
where to start. That's why we've put together
this guide to help you understand the basics of
private tutoring and what you should know
before getting started. We'll cover topics such as
the advantages of one-on-one attention, how
tutors can help with critical thinking, and how to
choose a qualified tutor who is a good match for
your child.

By the end of this post, you'll have a better

understanding of what private tutoring is, how it
can benefit your child, and how to choose the
right tutor for your family. With this knowledge,
you'll be able to make an informed decision
about whether private tutoring is the right
choice for your child and help them reach their
full potential.

Here are 7 things to know about private tutoring:

It is important to find a qualified and

experienced tutor who is a good match for the
student.
Private tutoring can be expensive, so it's
important to set clear goals and expectations
beforehand.
Tutoring Takes time.
Private tutoring can be customized to meet the
specific needs of the student.
Tutors can provide one-on-one attention and
focus on areas where the student needs the
most help.
Private tutoring can help boost a student's
confidence by providing them with the support
and guidance needed to understand and succeed
in their coursework.
Tutors can also help develop a student's critical
thinking skills by teaching them how to analyze

information.

NTA_New_logo_2013It is important to find a
qualified and experienced tutor who is a good
match for the student. Many programs have
teachers with degrees in random fields, rather
than education. For example, having a Harvard
Math Degree doesn't necessarily lend to the
expertise of an English teacher. It is important to
consider a tutor's qualifications and experience
in the subject they will be teaching.

NSEO is a fully accredited online learning center,

which allows students to learn from experienced
teachers and professionals.

teaching with a state license, ESL and have
degrees in relevant fields like English, elementary
or secondary education. This ensures that
students are receiving instruction from highly
qualified and experienced educators who are
experts in their field and have a deep
understanding of the subject they are teaching.

NSEO teachers have the ability to adapt and

create personalized lessons to meet the specific
needs of the student. This guarantees that the
student is receiving instruction that is tailored to
their unique learning style and abilities.
Furthermore, NSEO's teachers are also
committed to providing students with the best
possible learning experience, and that's why
they are happy to work with parents to provide
the student with the best possible outcome.

important to set clear goals and expectations
beforehand.

tutoring can be expensive, so it's important to
set clear goals and expectations beforehand.
However, online lessons are better because
teachers have more experience and it's cheaper.

This allows parents to get the best quality

education for their child without breaking the
bank.

At NSEO, teachers stay for at least one year and

spend the time needed to develop the right plan
that will be worth the investment.
This ensures that students are receiving
instruction from educators who are committed
to helping them reach their full potential.
Additionally, high-quality teachers who might
not want to leave their home, now students can
get access to them through online tutoring.

Tutoring Takes time.

on students’ academic achievement, formal
schooling, and educational inequality in Korea."
Columbia University.

If you're considering tutoring for your child, you

should be aware that it takes time to see results.
Research suggests that 8-12 weeks is usually
enough to start seeing a difference in academic
performance. It's important to set up metrics to
track your child's progress, as this will help you
understand if the tutoring is working for your
child. According to the National Center for
Education Statistics:

students who receive tutoring for 4+ hours a

week can expect to see an average improvement
in academic performance over 8-12 weeks.

Similarly, the Center for Education Statistics

survey found:

students who received more than 8 hours of

tutoring a week experienced a significant
increase in their reading scores over 8-12 weeks.

A study published in the Journal of Educational

Psychology also showed that students who
received tutoring for 8-12 weeks had a
statistically significant improvement in academic
performance compared to students who
received no tutoring.

To make sure your child's tutoring is effective, it's

important to communicate your metrics to track
progress. That way, tutors will be held
accountable to you and work towards meeting
the desired goals.

Private tutoring can be customized to meet the

specific needs of the student.
Private tutoring can be customized to meet the
specific needs of the student. Unlike
standardized lesson plans that are used in a
classroom setting, private tutoring addresses the
specific gaps in a student's learning. Just like a
house built with holes will fall down, a student's
education built on gaps in understanding will
struggle to succeed.

A private tutor can assess a student's strengths

and weaknesses and create a customized plan to
help them fill in those gaps and achieve their full
potential.

For example, if a student is struggling with math,

a private tutor can focus on math specific lessons
and techniques to help the student understand
and excel in math. They can also provide
additional resources, such as math practice tests,
and work with the student to identify their
specific areas of weakness, and develop a
personalized plan to help them improve.

Additionally, a private tutor can also work with

students to build their confidence and
motivation, which can have a positive impact on
their overall academic performance.

Tutors can provide one-on-one attention and

focus on areas where the student needs the
most help.

Tutors can provide one-on-one attention and

focus on areas where the student needs the
most help. In a classroom setting, it can be
difficult for a teacher to give each student the
individual attention they need.

With private tutoring, the student is the center

of attention and can receive the support and
guidance they need to succeed. Research has
shown that one-on-one tutoring is an effective
way to improve student learning outcomes.

A study published in the Journal of Educational

Psychology found that students who received
one-on-one tutoring made significant gains in
math and reading achievement, compared to
students who did not receive tutoring.

Another study, published in the Journal of

Educational Research, found that students who
received one-on-one tutoring had significantly
higher test scores and grade point averages than
students who did not receive tutoring.

These research findings suggest that one-on-one

tutoring can be a powerful tool for improving
student achievement.

When students receive individualized attention,

they are more likely to engage with the material,
ask questions, and receive feedback. They can
also move at their own pace, which can be
especially beneficial for students who are
struggling or who have unique learning needs.

Additionally, private tutors can work with

students to identify and overcome specific
challenges, such as test anxiety or lack of
motivation, which can have a significant impact
on their academic performance.

Overall, one-on-one tutoring can provide

students with the support and guidance they
need to reach their full potential.

Private tutoring boosts student's confidence by

providing them with the support to understand
and succeed
Private tutoring can help boost a student's
confidence by providing them with the support
and guidance needed to understand and succeed
in their coursework.

Even if teachers prepare their own lessons,

parents should feel comfortable sharing school
work and grades in school because the teachers
have no trouble adapting and want the most for
that student so would be happy to help.

Research has shown that tutoring can have a

positive impact on student confidence. For
example, a study published in the Journal of
Educational Psychology found that students who
received one-on-one tutoring reported feeling
more confident in their ability to succeed in
school.

tutoring reported feeling more confident in their
ability to succeed in school.

Additionally, NSEO teachers take the time to dig

into where the student's weaknesses are to
make sure they don't fall behind. Sometimes it
takes a while to see improvements in tutoring,
but research suggests that most students will see
a significant improvement in their academic
performance within 8-12 weeks of regular
tutoring sessions.

It's worth to note that improvement in a

student's performance is not only a question of
time, but also of the student's engagement and
motivation, the quality of the teacher, and the
specific needs and gaps of the student. But,
having a general idea of what to expect in terms
of time frame can help parents to better set their
expectations and understand the process.

Tutors help develop critical thinking skills by

teaching them how to analyze and solve
problems, rather than just memorizing
information.
DALL·E 2023-01-24 22.08.04 - critical thinking
gears in a brain graphic

Tutors can also help develop a student's critical

thinking skills by teaching them how to analyze
and solve problems, rather than just memorizing
information.

It's important for ESL learners to understand

American thinking style to help them succeed.

A study published in the Journal of Cross-

Cultural Psychology found that Korean students
often struggle with critical thinking and essay
writing because the Korean style of learning is
much different from the American style. The
study found that the Korean education system
emphasizes rote memorization and test-taking
strategies, whereas the American system places
a greater emphasis on critical thinking and
problem-solving skills.

One of the best ways for ESL learners to

understand the American style of thinking is
from a native teacher. A native speaker of English
can provide insight into idiomatic expressions,
cultural references, and the subtleties of the
language that can be difficult for non-native
speakers to grasp.

Additionally, they can provide guidance on how

to think and communicate like a native speaker,
which can be beneficial for students in academic
settings as well as in their personal and
professional lives.

Conclusion
NSEO's online learning center provides students
with access to experienced and qualified
teachers who are experts in their field, and who
are committed to providing the best possible
learning experience.

This can help to ensure that students are

receiving instruction that is tailored to their
unique learning style and abilities, and that they
are making progress towards their academic
goals.

With clear goals and expectations, and a

commitment to high-quality instruction, online
tutoring can be an effective and cost-effective
way to help students succeed.

Introduction
Kunwoo Park is a fourth grader student whom I
have taught for nine months.

At first, Kunwoo could not make any sentences but

now has completed over 80 English lessons
complete with vocabulary.
In this, he has strengthened his sentence structure
and has begun to develop his opinions and
discussion ideas. He has a much clearer
understanding of the language as a result, and has
advanced to learning academic vocabulary at his
grade level as a consequence of our work together.

He even aced his Hagwon vocabulary test!

Learning a new language can be difficult, but

Kunwoo persevered through the lessons and has
come out on the other side as a transformed
student, strong in academics and speaking.

The Story of Kunwoo

Kunwoo came to me with a desire to develop his
vocabulary, which was very little.

He was not confident at all.

In fact, I asked him how he was feeling at the

beginning of a lesson. He was supposed to have a
test that day. He answered, ”Sad. Test.” That
broke my heart!

To boost his confidence and to better prepare for

the bi-weekly test, we reviewed the test material in
each class. That helped him retain the information
and his bi-weekly test scores went up!

In addition to vocabulary lessons, I had Kunwoo

play speaking games in each lesson.

Character designing games helped him understand

how to make sentences with singular and plural
nouns, such as “I would like blue eyes,” and “I
would like this hairstyle.” The constant repetition
helped him tremendously. He also had a hard time
identifying the characters and settings of stories.

We tackled that issue with grammar focus to

establish his understanding of story elements.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AMThe

advancement in his understanding is truly
remarkable. Through consistent effort and
participation in our classes, his comprehension of
the English language has noticeably grown.

He is now able to grasp new concepts and ideas

with greater ease and confidence, and this
improvement has had a positive impact on his
overall proficiency in the language.

I am impressed by his dedication and proud of his

progress.

Why Kunwoo Chose You

Kunwoo was hesitant to start learning English at
first, but after taking a trial class with me and
hearing positive feedback from a friend who had
also been my student, he decided to enroll in my
classes.

This trust that was built through his friend's

experience with me helped Kunwoo's parents feel
confident in my abilities as a teacher and trust me
with their child's education.

Kunwoo was very shy at first and he often looked

up at the ceiling and said “Ummmmm” to
communicate that he was thinking but that he
didn’t have the words to express himself.

I provided him with very simple answers that he

could choose from to answer my questions.
Kunwoo came to understand that he can trust me
to not leave him confused.

Celebrating Kunwoo's victories has been a crucial

part of our journey together.

I've found that using stickers as a reward when he

excels in a particular task has been a powerful
motivator and has helped to significantly boost his
confidence. The recognition of his efforts and
achievements helps Kunwoo to see his own
progress and feel proud of himself.

These small celebrations have made a big impact

on his learning experience and have helped to keep
him motivated and engaged.

The Results
Kunwoo's confidence and comfort level speaking
English has significantly increased.

In the beginning, he was shy and reserved, and I

could only see a glimpse of his face beneath his
eyes. However, as time passed, he opened up and
started to trust me, allowing me to see his full face.

This was a remarkable moment for me, as I could

see how much he had warmed up to me and the
classes. I was also astounded by the progress he
made in his language skills.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AM

He went from having limited vocabulary and
struggling with simple words, to expanding his
knowledge and understanding more complex
words, like "adaptation" and "automatically".

This demonstrates the effectiveness of our classes

in enhancing Kunwoo's English language abilities.

When students receive individualized attention,

they are more likely to engage with the material,
ask questions, and receive feedback. They can also
move at their own pace, which can be especially
beneficial for students who are struggling or who
have unique learning needs.

One-on-one tutoring can provide students with the

support and guidance they need to reach their full
potential.

Introduction
I have been working with Evan for three years.

Evan was a student that was introduced to me in

mid- 2020. He had a trial with another teacher but
they were specifically looking for a male teacher.
He was interested in cars, trains and hamsters– and
could understand and explain them in great detail.

Evan’s parents were looking for instruction that

focused on speaking, and they specifically wanted
Evan to work on his ability to speak at length on a
topic and hold a conversation.

During his first eight months, we successfully

learned and used the proper past tense 90% of the
time, including irregular verbs. After that, we
learned how to explain and describe ideas that
interested him along with relevant vocabulary.

Now three years in, we are working on his

convergent and divergent critical thinking skills to
develop his problem solving skills and creativity in
English.

The Story of Evan

Evan came to me in mid-2020. His father owns a
hagwon and was educated in the states but had
little time to teach Evan. His mother, also fluent,
was looking for a native teacher to take him to the
next level. They weren’t exactly sure what they
wanted, in the beginning they wanted to focus on
advanced tenses which stood in contradiction to
their goal that he could speak fluently.

I outlined an initial plan where we would work on

the past tense, the long /e/ sound and expressive
conversation.

After eight months of hard work and consistent

lessons 45 minutes, three times per week, I was
proud to report home that Evan had successfully
mastered the past tense. He was making major
progress in his expressive language which meant
he was able to draw pictures related to stories and
describe the scenes and characters he had just
developed.

We worked on methods and tools to express ideas

using correct words and began to add to his
vocabulary via “Greek and Latin Roots” along with
figurative language.

From the start, we had to go back all the way to

identify the gaps he had in his learning and fill in
the gaps, working at it until he had mastery.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AM

In the past three years, we have gone from working
in the past tense to having him be able to express
himself fully. He is confident and does not hesitate
when speaking; his spoken language is very fluid.
Currently, we are working on more difficult, first
language reading and summaries– which is
certainly not easy, even for kids in America!

Along the way, I have developed a strong

relationship with Evan and am glad to call him my
little buddy!

Developing Native Level Skills

Evan and his parents’ goals were for him to be able
to communicate in all areas of English like a
student in America or Canada would.
They would want to put him into an International
or American High School without having to be
concerned with his English ability: both socially and
academically. Like many parents, they dream of
sending their only son to Hardvard and witnessing
his success.

Unlike most parents, they are rigorous in their

pursuit of this goal and were willing to dedicate 3-5
hours per week to English-only education (both
social and academic).

Evan’s parents wanted a wide door of opportunity

to open for their son and so we developed a
learning plan and set to work on these goals.

Why Evan Chose You

Evan chose me because I prioritized a connection
with him. It was tough to strike a balance between
allowing him to be himself, be tired or moody or
excited on any given day, and bring in serious work
for improvement.

Evan’s parents chose me because they knew that

during the lesson, I was 100% ready to move Evan
forward and all of my attention was on him.

They liked me because of the careful balance

between fun and rigor– and actual enjoyment of
the class despite the intensity thereof.

I also took a lot of personal time in the beginning

of our relationship to email mom and dad my
thoughts and concerns, as well as our successes.

How You Responded

In response, we got straight to work on his learning
plan. During the first three months, he started to
be able to identify errors in tenses for simple
sentences.

In addition to this, we worked on other grammar

rules: subject pronouns, subject verb agreement,
conjunctions.
He achieved mastery in these areas and applied
them to his speaking.

Expressive speech was our long term project. Since

he was comfortable with me, we started to do
speaking prompts, where we were given a scenario
for conversation. I typed the scene as we spoke and
when we were complete, we reviewed and tried to
think of better words like more specific adjectives
or more targeted verbs.

Then, I had him read out the revised version and

encouraged him for his hard work.

This was very effective for him. As we developed

this approach, it changed the way he thought
about communicating, so not only was progress
reflected in his speaking but it also expressed itself
in his writing.

Now his speaking is strong and his reading skills are

where his parents wanted them to be. We recently
pivoted to focusing on and developing his talent in
the written word.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AMOur goal is to

develop his writing skills so that all four areas:
listening, speaking, reading and writing– will be
strongly developed and propel him towards his
goal of attending Harvard freshman class of 2029.

The Results
One teacher and I continue to work with Evan.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AM

Overall, he has matured into a strong speaker with
creative and silly tendencies. Where we started
was one word answers, speaking hesitancy and
frequent misunderstandings on figurative
language. Now Evan tells his own jokes and can
keep up with anything I say.

I never need to slow down my speech and he never

has trouble.

He has begun to attend English Hagwan to be able

to learn test taking strategies but continues our
lessons because, as his parents say, “We focus on
what is important for the future and how he will
integrate with American culture later on in
college.”

My hope is that Evan will attend an IVY league

school where he will thrive in a group of
multicultural friends. I know that this little man is
going place and I’m excited to see the path unfold.

When students receive individualized attention,

they are more likely to engage with the material,
ask questions, and receive feedback. They can also
move at their own pace, which can be especially
beneficial for students who are struggling or who
have unique learning needs.

One-on-one tutoring can provide students with the

support and guidance they need to reach their full
potential.

Topic-How-to-Be-a-Successful

This student success story features Teacher Joe's

student, Hyesung.

Hear Hyesung's inspiring success story - a real-life

student who was transformed by Teacher Joe NSEO
program. Discover how this program could be right
for you, with first-hand accounts of student
success.

Are you wondering if NSEO's program is right for

you?

Come and read the wild success stories of our own

students, written by their teachers and featuring
real data. Discover if NSEO's program is right for
you through our collection of student success
stories.

Introduction
Hyesung has been my student for two years, since
February of 2021.

He began as a shy 3rd grade student with very little

confidence in his own abilities.

Initially, Hyesung was quite hesitant to open up to

me in the classroom but I could tell he was
exceptionally smart. As our classes progressed,
Hyesung became more comfortable realizing that
in the NSEO classrooms we learn AND have fun.
Fast forward to our classes today and Hyesung has
come a long way.

He can express himself using stronger and more

specific vocabulary, has learned real-world skills
like grammar related to dining in a restaurant, and
has only a fraction of the pronunciation errors he
had when he first came to NSEO.

The Story of Hyesung

Hyesung is an incredibly busy boy and two years
later I am still impressed and a bit shocked at the
workload that he carries day to day. Whether it’s
going from academy to academy, taking placement
tests or honing his art skills, Hyesung lives an
intense and focused life for a young boy.

When he first came to me, while he had an

intermediate grasp of English, it was clear there
were a plethora of fossilized errors and tiny
mistakes that had gone unnoticed and uncorrected
by Hyesung’s other English teachers. Verb tense
issues, not understanding basic parts of speech like
nouns, verbs, and adjectives and poor
pronunciation impeded Hyesung’s abilities to use
English accurately.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AM

Today, I find that Hyesung is much more capable of
discussing advanced topics, understanding 85% of
what I say even when I speak at my natural pace.

Some highlights of the recent term include

examining the etymology of words to understand
prefixes and suffixes, using modal verbs like ‘could’,
‘would’ and ‘should’ for giving advice, and his
improved ability to discuss his personal life in
depth.

Just Be You!
Hyesung’s biggest challenge upon joining NSEO
was an overall inability to express himself
genuinely. I think this was the result of lack of
confidence in his own speaking abilities.

This stemmed from common errors he made with

verb tenses, skipped words and pronunciation.

Today I am so thrilled to see how much Hyesung

has opened up over the years. We really have a lot
of fun together. I realized that Hyesung responds
well to a silly and light-hearted classroom
environment.

Once he realized that we can joke around and that

mistakes are part of the learning process- but that
attention to detail is always paramount- he has
been eager to learn and participate.

Another challenge of Hyesung’s in the beginning of

our time together was that he did not understand
what nouns, verbs and adjectives were.

Despite his current intermediate understanding of

progressive verbs, figurative language and various
grammar, when he first became my student it took
him time to understand the basic building blocks of
English grammar.

Why Hyesung Chose You

Hyesung and I had instant rapport.
During our trial we bonded over a mutual interest
in sharks and I believe that he could instantly tell
that NSEO classes were different from others.

We laughed, we joked, but we stayed on task and

did a quick review of ‘be’ verbs and simple tenses.

To finish the trial, we read about sharks to practice

his pronunciation. I corrected errors Hyesung made
but also encouraged and challenged him to correct
himself . This mix of fun, learning, and interesting
topics are why Hyesung chose to be my student.

How Joe Responded

While Hyesung struggled to apply correct verb
tenses in his speech, he understood them in
theory. Therefore, our initial classes focused on
conjugating and using the proper form of the
helping verbs ‘to be.’ and ‘to have.’

These are basic grammatical structures in English

and I noticed that Hyesung often had tensing and
subject-verb agreement errors with these helping
verbs.

We spent a significant amount of time drilling ‘be’

verbs and progressive tenses as these are some
foundations of English grammar. To give him
opportunities for application and production, I
always ask Hyesung detailed questions about his
days and weekends, encouraging him along the
way.

Additionally, often I will show him a silly picture

and ask him to tell me in different verb tenses what
is happening. These have been entertaining and
practical drills that have aided his verb tense
awareness.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AMToday, he

rarely has issues using verb tenses accurately.

To address Hyesung’s pronunciation errors we

worked a lot in the early days with tongue twisters.
These have been useful and fun tools to call
attention to proper pronunciation and we have
shared many laughs while attempting to say these!

As I mentioned before, Hyesung loves a good

laugh and I discovered that he responds well to
role-playing activities. These have been a great way
to improve his speaking while giving him sentence
frames for reference. Going to the doctor, making
hotel reservations and dining out are just some of
the topics we have focused on in these
conversation-based lessons.

The Results
It has been wonderful to see Hyesung’s growth
since I began teaching him. He has advanced in
many areas with his language abilities and has
opened up and grown in confidence in the
classroom.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AM

Where before he was reticent to share any details
about his personal life, that is no longer the case.
In fact, I recall a class in which he described a
recent trip to Everland as we looked at a map of
the park. He was able to explain to me the various
rides, what he has done there, and what he likes
and dislikes with minimal assistance from me.

Recently, Hyesung and I had one of our best classes

to date.

What began as a lesson about applying adverbs

morphed into a lesson discussing the Korean Lunar
New Year, the meaning of the words ‘lunar’ and
‘solar,’ followed with reading comprehension
activities focused on a book about eclipses.

I was impressed by Hyesung’s ability to take in new

information and adapt with the flow of a less-
structured lesson that focused on conversation
more than drilling.

I mention this lesson because it perfectly typifies

what an NSEO lesson is all about. Instead of rote
book work and following a set lesson, we pivoted
and discussed a relevant topic to Hyesung’s life,
improving his English along the way.

Building a friendship with Hyesung has been such a

rewarding process for me and there is no
substitute for the attention to detail that is possible
in our classes. I am proud of his progress and am
excited to expand his English skills further!

When students receive individualized attention,

they are more likely to engage with the material,
ask questions, and receive feedback. They can also
move at their own pace, which can be especially
beneficial for students who are struggling or who
have unique learning needs.

One-on-one tutoring can provide students with the

support and guidance they need to reach their full
potential.

This student success story features Teacher

Margaux's student, Sarah.

Hear Sarah's inspiring success story - a real-life

NSEO program. Discover how this program could

student success.

Are you wondering if NSEO's program is right for

you?

Come and read the wild success stories of our own

students, written by their teachers and featuring
real data. Discover if NSEO's program is right for
you through our collection of student success
stories.

I first started working with Sarah over two years

ago. Her parents requested that I specifically focus
on grammar with her (both written and verbal),
since this is an area she struggles with. They also
wanted me to focus on her speaking skills, helping
her use more descriptive words and speak for a
longer period of time on a certain subject.

During our time together we have worked very

hard on these goals.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AM

Today, Sarah can speak at length about various
topics that she is familiar with. She is able to hold a
conversation and ask questions about topics that
are completely new to her. She can correctly use
the past, present and future tenses when speaking
and writing.

During our written grammar activities, she is more

engaged and focused due to the exercises that are
specifically catered to her level and her learning
needs.

The Story of Sarah

Sarah is a very vibrant and talkative student. Her
favorite part of our English classes is when we are
able to discuss a variety of topics.

She is a curious student, and is always the first one

to ask follow-up questions if she is unfamiliar with
a topic or vocabulary word.

She attends an English academy, but it specifically

caters to her reading skills. English academy is not
her favorite activity, as she is not allowed to be
very creative or speak often. She is extremely
artistic, often showing me her arts and crafts that
she has created. She has shown me paintings,
pottery, and miniatures that she has created
herself.

This love of art has been essential for our English

classes, as I have been able to create activities that
combine both crafting and grammar.

Improving Sarah’s Grammar Skills

Sarah wanted me to help her with her grammar
skills. This was a difficult task towards the
beginning, because she did not enjoy any type of
grammar or grammar activity.
She labeled grammar as ‘boring’ and
‘uninteresting’. I could understand her perspective,
but there were simply some grammar skills that we
needed to address so that she could improve her
overall English.

She was making major mistakes in her speech.

Incorrect tense or incorrect conjugation of irregular
verbs were clearly linked to her unwillingness to
practice grammar.

When I learned of her love for art, I decided to find

a way to incorporate this into some of our
grammar lessons. I thought that this would be a
fun and different way to learn about grammar
instead of completing a worksheet.

For example, writing sentences (that are

grammatically correct) and then drawing a
corresponding picture. Another example is having
her describe something to me, with as much detail
as possible, and I have to draw it.

All of these activities I have specifically selected for

Sarah because I know her interests, but they also
address the specific grammar mistakes that she
was making.

Why Sarah Chose You

I believe that Sarah and her parents selected me as
her tutor because of my ability to connect with the
student beyond the topics or grammar, reading,
and vocabulary.

I think that each of my students is a unique

individual, and I love to get to know their
personalities and interests. This is so important to
me, as it enables me to create a lesson plan that is
specifically catered to their needs and their
interests.

For example, with Sarah, because I have learned

that she is quite creative, we have been able to do
grammar and vocabulary activities through arts
and crafts. Since I was able to listen to my students'
needs and interests, she trusts me as her teacher,
and we have a much better relationship and
understanding.

There are times where we need to do a more

difficult grammar task, but she is a much more
willing learner because she knows I am here to
help, and I will listen to her when she doesn’t
understand.

How Margaux Responded

I understood early on that grammar was going to
be a difficult skill to address with Sarah. I could not
take the more traditional approach through
worksheets or presentations.

I needed to help her understand that learning can

be very fun and rewarding.

When working together, I made notes on the

specific problems that Sarah had (incorrect tenses
or incorrect irregular verb conjugation). Once I
identified where she was struggling specifically, I
set to work finding activities that incorporated art
so that we could work on these skills in a creative
way.

The first time I presented her with a grammar and

art project, she was a little surprised, because I
think she never had a teacher help her in this way.
But, I could see she was excited!

The class flew by, and she even said that she didn’t
realize that our time was up for the day. This was
my goal, have her complete grammar activities, but
have it be enjoyable for her!

The Results
Grammar is still not Sarah’s favorite subject, but I
have learned to creatively incorporate the
necessary activities to improve her skills.

Compared to when we first started working

together, she has grown greatly in her speaking and
grammar skills. More specifically, she is a student
that has become more respectful and we are able
to have an excellent teacher/student relationship.

I have come to understand her as well, and there

are some days that she has had a difficult time, and
I have adapted lessons accordingly.

Due to this relationship that focuses on listening to

one another and respecting one another, we are
able to accomplish so many more tasks. We are
able to have serious classes where we focus on
learning new grammar skills, but we are also able
to have long conversations debating a specific
topic.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AMShe is able to

keep up with my vocabulary and phrases, but is
also able to stop and ask questions because she
knows I will take the time to listen and explain.

I have loved working with Sarah, and I am so proud

of all her hard work looking back on the year and a
half. It only makes me more excited to see what
she will accomplish in the future!

When students receive individualized attention,

they are more likely to engage with the material,
ask questions, and receive feedback. They can also
move at their own pace, which can be especially
beneficial for students who are struggling or who
have unique learning needs.

One-on-one tutoring can provide students with the

support and guidance they need to reach their full
potential.

Student Success stories series is a collection of

studies on students that have been wildly
successful in our program. Success stories have
been written by our own teachers and feature their
real students so new potential students can see if
the NSEO program is right for them. Please note
that the names and some personal data has been
changed to protect the privacy of the students.

This student success story features Teacher

Aundia's student, Sara.

The Story of Sara Park

Sara is a shy high school student getting ready to
transfer to a school abroad. After connecting with
the student and her family, we evaluated Sara’s
needs and created a personalized learning plan.
When I first met Sara, she was entering her first
year of high school and preparing to study abroad
in America. At first, she was very timid and lacked
confidence in her English ability. Sara understood
the English language well because she had English
lessons provided by her school and attended an
English Hagwon.

I understood that Sara would need not only to

retain new information but also have scholarly
discussions with peers about a topic, be able to
formulate and express her opinion and respond to
an academic question in written form.

However, she needed more experience conversing

in English. Sara was anxious because this move to
America meant all her core studies would now be
in English.

In addition, she would now need to build

meaningful relationships with her teachers and
peers to have a successful high school experience.

Understanding Sara's goals allowed me to create

lessons specific to her needs. As a former
classroom teacher, I understood that Sara would
need not only to retain new information but also
have scholarly discussions with peers about a topic,
be able to formulate and express her opinion and
respond to an academic question in written form
while citing information from various sources.

In preparation for Sara's transition, I created mini-

academic lessons that would pierce multiple topics
and develop growth opportunities.
Before creating the lessons, I looked over her
school's standard course of study. I made lesson
plans to go over the topics she would be studying
once she left in the Fall.

Each of our mini-lessons examined new vocabulary

and posed questions for her to respond to in
written and spoken form. She was also given
various opportunities to express her thoughts on
new and old ideas.

Why Sara Chose You

My first interaction with Sara began with a 25-
minute trial. Within this short time, Sara and I were
able to make a connection that put her at ease.
That bond was over our experience of moving to
new countries.

I told Sara that I knew how overwhelming moving

to a new country was because I had lived and
taught in Korea for one year.

After finding this out, Sara asked me about my

experience as a foreigner and my thoughts on
Korean culture. She asked me where I lived, if I
could make friends, and how my first day of school
was.

I took her questions as a clue as to her concerns. In

our following lessons, I would teach her about
American culture, use Google Maps to see her new
neighborhood, and teach her common expressions
used by peers.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 6.58.18 AMUltimately,

Sara and her family chose me as her teacher
because I am a licensed teacher and could address
her academic need. Still, I also took the time to
understand their daughter as a maturing teen.

How Aundia Responded

I first wanted to get Sara excited about chatting in
English while evaluating her prior knowledge,
expression, and comprehension skills. To initiate
conversation, I asked her to tell me what she knew
about New York. From there, I could choose topics
we could elaborate on.

Sara was prepared routinely, took additional

notes, and often ended class with a question she
had for our next session.

We began with mini lessons, the first topic being

Blizzards and other severe weather. This subject
was a great way to incorporate the winter months
in New York and the essential questions “What
conditions create server weather” and “How is
snow made?”I noticed that Sara was prepared
routinely, took additional notes, and often ended
class with a question she had for our next session.
These small gestures made me believe she found
our sessions relevant and exciting.

I was delighted to create personalized lessons that

suited Sara's needs. And look forward to hearing
how she is adjusting to life in America when she
leaves this fall.

When students receive individualized attention,

they are more likely to engage with the material,
ask questions, and receive feedback. They can also
move at their own pace, which can be especially
beneficial for students who are struggling or who
have unique learning needs.

One-on-one tutoring can provide students with the

support and guidance they need to reach their full
potential.
