UNIT I PH3201 – Physics for Civil Engineering

Part A ‘2’ Marks Q & A

1. Define fenestration.
Fenestration is defined as any opening or arrangement of openings in a building (normally
filled with glazing). It admits daylight and any devices in the immediate proximity of the opening that
affect light distribution.
2. What is thermal insulation?
Thermal insulation is to resist the flow of heat to and from a body, which reduces the rate of
heat flow.
3. What are thermal insulating materials?

E
The materials which are used to insulate thermally are known as thermal insulating materials.
They are classified as (a) Organic materials (b) Inorganic materials.

ww
Organic materials: Cattle hair, Silk, Wool, Wood-pulp, Corkboard, Sawdust, Sugar-cane fiber,

O
w.E
Cardboard, Paper and Leather.
Inorganic materials: Still air, Mineral wool, Slag-wool, Glass wool, Charcoal, Gypsum powder Slag,

asy
Coke powder and Asbestos.
4. What are the benefits of thermal insulation?

En
The benefits of thermal insulations are
C
E
g
a) Non-Toxic, Environmental friendly solutions.
b) No heat absorption and subsequent dissipation.
ine
AC

c) Expansion joints can be avoided.

eri
d) Temperatures drop of 5 ͦ C to 10 ͦ C depending on outside temperature.
5. Define thermal mass.
ng
.ne
Thermal mass is defined as the material’s resistance to change in temperature as heat is added
or removed. It is a key factor in dynamic heat transfer interactions within a building.
t
R

6. Define density.
Density is defined as the mass of a material per unit volume. In the SI system, it is given as
G

3
kg/m . For a fixed volume of material, greater density will permit the storage of more heat.
7. What is thermal capacity?
Thermal capacity is an indicator of the ability of a material to store heat per unit volume. The
greater the thermal capacity of a material, the more heat it can store in a given volume per degree of
temperature increase. Thermal capacity for a material is obtained by taking the product of density and
specific heat. Unit is J/K.

8. What is thermal comfort?

Thermal comfort is the condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal
environment and is assessed by subjective evaluation. It is the occupants satisfaction with the
surrounding thermal conditions.
9. Define air temperature.
The air temperature is defined as the average temperature of the air surrounding the occupant
with respect to location and time.
10. What is mean by radiant temperature?
The radiant temperature is related to the amount of radiant heat transferred from a surface. It
depends on the material ability to absorb or emit heat or its emissivity.

E
11. Define relative humidity (RH).

ww Relative humidity (RH) is defined as the ratio of the amount of water vapour in the air to the

O
amount of water vapor that the air can hold at the specific temperature and pressure.

w.E
12. Outline the term solar radiation.
Solar radiation often called the solar resource is a general term for the electromagnetic

asy C
radiation emitted by the sun. It is the intensity of sun rays falling per unit time per unit area and is
usually expressed in watts per square metre (W/m2).

En
13. Name the uses of solar passive design.
E
g
Solar passive buildings are designed to achieve thermal and visual comfort by using natural

ine
energy sources and sinks e.g. solar radiation, wet surfaces, outside air, vegetation, etc.
AC

14. What are the classifications of shading devices?

eri
Shading devices are classified in to two types as, (i) internal shading devices and (ii) external
shading devices.
ng
15. Infer the term internal shading devices.
.ne
t
Internal shading devices such as curtains, vertical blinds can reduce heat energy passing
R

through a window. The effectiveness of these shading devices that depends on their ability to reflect
the incoming solar radiations back through the window.
G

16. What is external shading devices?

The external shading device is a vertical fin that can reduce the amount of solar heat energy
passing through a window. They can be used to reduce the area of the glass surface i.e, actually
impacted by the sun rays.
17. Mention the uses of central heating system.
A central heating system provides warmth to the whole interior of a building or portion of a
building from one point to multiple rooms.
