Similarly, if we multiply 5 by itself for 6 times, (iv) 2 2 2 2×2 4

In 56, the number 5 is called the base of 56 and

When the exponent of a negative integer is odd, Thus, 23 × 25 = 23 + 5

am × bm = (a × b)m
Ex.4 Which one is greater : 3 or 5 ?5 3
Eg :
Sol. 35 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 9 × 9 × 3
53 × 33 = (5 × 5 × 5) × (3 × 3 × 3)

= (5 × 3) × (5 × 3) × (5 × 3)
and 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 25 × 5 = 125
= 15 × 15 × 15 = (15)3
Clearly, 243 > 125  3 >5

So, 53 × 33 = (5 × 3)3 = (15)3
Here, we find that 15 is the product of bases 5
and 3.

Law-3 :
If a is a non-zero integer and m and n are two

am  an = am – n
and for m < n

By using Law-3 of exponents, we have
(i) 26 ÷ 36 = =
26 ÷ 26 = 26–6 = 20
Thus, 20 = 1

In general am  am = am – m = a0 and also

Hence, 26 ÷ 36 = =
