CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Covid-19 Pandemic has a huge impact specifically in the way of learning of

the students. Government introduced 2 ways of learning which are Online

Learning and Modular Learning. These ways of learning are good alternatives to

traditional learning especially now we are still fighting with the pandemic but

we cannot deny that because of these ways of learning there are different

emerging problems that affect the students academic performance. Some

students can't cope up with these new ways of learning because of the quick

transition from traditional to New ways of learning.

Maybe the new mode of learning has a good effect on other students but we

cannot neglect those students struggling with the new mode of learning. Some

students are choosing to stop studying because they have different

responsibilities at home or they are working for the sake of their families. That's

1
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

why the researchers are doing this study to know more about those problems

and identify what problems we need to focus on to have immediate solutions.

The main target of this study was to identify the common problems of the

students in the new way of learning and provide solutions with these problems

or alternatives to avoid those problems. This study could be a basis to say that

the new mode of learning has a good effect not only in their academic

performances but also in their mental health and to know if we should continue

doing it in the next school years. It can also reflect what way of learning the

students want.

Statement of the Problem

Specifically, the respondents is sought to finally answer the following
questions:

1.) Is the new way of learning effective for students?

2.) Problem: the advantages of new mode learning to the students?

3.) How can they solve these common problems in a new mode of learning?

2
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

4.) What are the positive and negative effects of the new modes of
learning for the olfu students?

5.) Why is it important for them to cope up with these new modes of
learning?

Variable Discussion

Online Learning

Online learning is defined as a teaching and learning process

between teachers and pupils that involves various digital mediums, such as

‘Whatsapp’, ‘Zoom’, and ‘Google Classroom’. In addition, online learning does

not refer to direct learning alone. Any assignments or activities, provided by

the teacher online, are considered part of online learning (Zulaikha Mohd

Basar, Azlin Norhaini Mansor, Khairul Azhar Jamaludin, & Bity Salwana Alias.

2021).

Interactive online learning allows students to uncover new information by

exploring digital libraries and websites. As further technologies are

introduced to the field of education, distance learning facilitates the global

dissemination of information and knowledge (Hasifah, 2020). She contends

that online learning is

3
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

important because it can enable more effective self-learning. Students can

choose the time they spend, the content they learn, and the direction of their

learning. Students also have the opportunity to revisit challenging topics until

they feel confident in their understanding. A sudden shift to online class from

traditional learning is not that easy. Many students were not prepared in this

new mode of learning. A study by (Saidi et al., 2021) has resulted that the

majority of their respondents said that they were not familiar with online

learning and it is their first time to experience this. In shifting to online learning

from traditional learning the students have encountered different challenges.

An example of this are poor network connection, psychological issues, lack of

device to use and etc..

Network Issues

All over the world, millions of students are affected, and some

already gave up their status of being a student. And one of the biggest challenges

to address the problem regarding learning is the availability of technological

gadgets and internet connectivity (Asio, J. M. R., Gadia, E., Abarintos, E., Paguio,

D., & Balce, M. 2021).

Often weak signals played their part during teaching due to which the sound

broke, the video hung, or there was a lag between the two. Due to this the class

4
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

could not be conducted seamlessly. Thus, network issues, such as weak signals

or no internet access were not taken into consideration during the remote

teaching (Anbareen, J. 2020). Obstacles and challenges in the implementation

of online learning remain. Among these, poor internet access in schools,

campuses and residential areas, the cost of internet packages, and issues with

technological facilities are highlighted. Students should strive to increase their

knowledge of technology to manage their studies effectively. This is

particularly important as part of learning new technological approaches to

education. (Zulaikha Mohd Basar, Azlin Norhaini Mansor, Khairul Azhar

Jamaludin, & Bity Salwana Alias. 2021).

Philippines is now at 89th out of 138 countries in terms of median download

speed for mobile devices and 63rd in terms of broadband median download

speed (GMA News Online, 2022). We can see that the Philippines do still need

to improve regarding internet speed. As the students are now in the new mode

of learning or online learning they are experiencing having poor network

connection.

There are students especially in remote towns who are experiencing poor

network connection (Mahyoob, 2020). Likewise, it was also found out in the

study done by (Selvaraj et al., 2021) that 76% of the respondents are

5
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

experiencing network connectivity issues as they are entering their online class.

As this online learning continues to be used as a mode of learning, having poor

network connection will be a hindrance to the students in attending online

classes especially in rural or remote areas.

Lack of developing social skills

According to (Anbareen, J. 2020), Even though learners could complete all their

lessons on time, what the traditional face-to-face classroom offered could not be

effectively copied by synchronous instructions. In a traditional classroom

setting students interact not only with their teachers but also with their

classmates. Hence there was zero interaction among the class fellows. The

teacher would ‘mute’ all the students and would ‘unmute’ only those who were

asked a question or who would raise a hand for queries or clarification.

Sometimes, the teacher could not pay attention to all the learners as there was a

limited time for each session, during which she had not only to assign the task

but also explain that. Moreover, it was also observed that there was no emphasis

on presentation and communication skills.

Psychological Issues

In this lifetime, Covid-19 has just suddenly appeared and affects the lives of

people. Students are not exempted from the impact of the novel coronavirus.

Students shifted to online learning and continued their studies while in the

6
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

middle of pandemic. As stated in the study of (Maulana, 2021), the majority of

the respondents have above normal anxiety level as they are studying online.

Therefore, students are experiencing different psychological issues in this

new mode of learning which affects their academic performances in school

during pandemic.

Definition of Terms:

Enable for us respondents to have a further knowledge about some terms were
not literally familiar of here are some terms to be guided:

Respondents - person who replies to something, especially one supplying

information for a survey or questionnaire or responding to an advertisement.

Impact - the force of impression of one thing on another: a significant or major

effect.

Academic - relating to performance in courses of study.

New normal - is a phrase that denotes a condition, behavior, or state of things

that is atypical but then becomes baseline casting a long-lasting effect. It is used

as a term in discourse describing a state to which an economy and society settles

following a crisis to emphasize that it differs from the prior situation

9
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

Social Constructivism - 'a social group constructing things for one another,

collaboratively creating a small culture of shared artifacts with shared

meanings.

E-Learning - A learning system based on formalized teaching but with the help

of electronic resources is known as E-learning. While teaching can be based in or

out of the classrooms, the use of computers and the Internet forms the major

component of E-learning.

Modular learning - is the current learning modality of primary education in

the Philippines where traditional teacher-student practice has now been

shifted to mother-child since mothers are the immediate assistants of their

child in modular learning. Therefore, they play essential parts in their

children's education

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Review of Related Literature

This chapter reviews the literature and research related to this topic

“Common problems in a new mode of learning among Grade 11 students of Our

Lady of Fatima University Antipolo Campus”” This chapter also includes a review
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

of related literature in both foreign and local studies that tackles the similarities

and relevancy in this topic.

2.1 Local Literature

In December 2019, an outbreak of a novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19,

occurred in China and has spread rapidly across the globe within a few months.

The Covid19 Pandemic has disrupted the whole momentum of traditional

education processes, causing students to struggle in the E-Learning program.

Schools implemented necessary technologies, developed learner and staff

resources, established systems and infrastructure, implemented new teaching

protocols, and modified their curriculum. This study examines the difficulties

experienced during the E-learning process and its impact on students'

perceptions of learning and satisfaction during the Pandemic. The findings found

that students in a home learning setting faced numerous challenges, including a

lack of technological proficiency, high Internet costs, and limited

interaction/socialization between and among students. Students also mentioned

certain difficulties they encountered when attending online programs.

Anxiety, sadness, inadequate Internet connectivity, and a negative home

learning environment are all factors that are exacerbated when students are
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

marginalized and from distant areas. Addressing these issues will reveal the

range of obstacles that students face in a complete online learning environment,

especially in the context of the pandemic. Meanwhile, a deeper understanding of

the methods students apply to overcome obstacles would provide useful

information to school officials and teachers, allowing them to better serve

students' online learning needs. This data might also be useful in reviewing the

strategy categorization in an online learning setting.

2.2 Foreign Literature

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted education at all levels in various

ways. Institutions and teacher educators had to quickly respond to an

unexpected and ‘forced’ transition from face-to-face to remote teaching. They

also had to create learning environments for students and teachers doing their

preparation in the light of the requirements of teacher education programs and

the conditions in which both universities

and schools had to operate (Carrillo, C., & Flores, M. A. 2020). Distance learning

has become a pervasive and growing phenomenon giving a tremendous boost to

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

the use of information and communication technologies in tertiary institutions.

This paper will examine some of the current research and thought on the

promises, problems, and the future possibilities in modern distance learning,

particularly types that are delivered via electronic means. (Furkatovna, A. N., &

Furkatovna, A. F. 2022).

It was found, that in some cases: there was a lack of information technology

equipment in the pupils’ homes, a lack of communication with the pupils and

their parents, a lack of motivation among pupils, and health problems had begun

emerge amongst children (Kruszewska, A., Nazaruk, S., & Szewczyk, K. 2020).The

method used in the study is to use a literature review method, a method that can

assist in this study, as it can find new problems in future studies. The problem

raised in this study is the desire to know which media are right, and compared to

online and offline media in the new normal period after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study provides data that can prove that the right media are in a new normal

period, for the common interest and the nation.During the new Coronavirus

Disease (COVID-19) pandemic of 2019, most tertiary institutions are adopting

distance learning to continue teaching and learning. Adopting distance learning

is not without its limitations and challenges, such as limited network coverage

and lack of gadgets between students. Distance learning also encourages

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

student-centered learning and self-study. Providing many opportunities for

higher education institutions, including scalability, research innovation, flexible

learning, diversity, support for remote students, coordination of assessment

methods, opportunities for innovation, offering non-academic courses, and

changing educational policies.

2.3 Local Study

Recently, there has been an explosion of studies relating to the new

normal in education. While many focused on national policies, professional

development, and curriculum, others zeroed in on the specific learning

experience of students during the pandemic. Among these are Copeland et

al. (2021) and Fawaz et al. (2021) who examined the impact of COVID-19 on

college students’ mental health and their coping mechanisms. Copeland et al.

(2021) reported that the pandemic adversely affected students’ behavioral and

emotional functioning, particularly attention and externalizing problems (i.e.,

mood and wellness behavior), which were caused by isolation, economic/health

effects, and uncertainties. In Fawaz et al. 's (2021) study, students raised their

concerns on learning and evaluation methods, overwhelming task load, technical

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

difficulties, and confinement. To cope with these problems, students actively

dealt with the situation by seeking help from their teachers and relatives and

engaging in recreational activities. These active-oriented coping mechanisms of

students were aligned with Carter et al. 's (2020), who explored students self-

regulation strategies.

To respond to the needs of learners, especially of the 3.5 million tertiary-level

students enrolled in approximately 2,400 HEIs, certain HEIs in the country have

implemented proactive policies for the continuance of education despite the

closure. These policies include modified forms of online learning that aim to

facilitate student learning activities. Online learning might be in terms of

synchronous, real-time lectures and time-based outcomes assessments, or

asynchronous, delayed-time activities, like pre-recorded video lectures and

time-independent assessments (Oztok et al., 2013). Case in point are top

universities in the country, viz., De La Salle University (DLSU), Ateneo de Manila

University (ADMU), the University of Santo Tomas (UST), and the state-run

University of the Philippines, Diliman (UPD).

2.4 Foreign Study

The study provided some three (3) challenges for Lebanese schools, their
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

faculty, and the students: internet connectivity was and still is choppy and quite

expensive for underprivileged students; many children from less fortunate

backgrounds do not have access to desktops or laptops; lack of training to

administer courses online (Alphabetical Order of Lebanon, March 2021).

Furthermore, they estimated at approximately 2 to 5 hours of screen time,

depending on the students’ age, along with the loss of social connections, the

development of the child, as a whole, has been impeded. It means that the loss of

social interactions of the student depends on the screen time used and his/her

age. However, even though they lack socializing, students did learn new skills

such as time management and responsibility (Alphabetical Order of Lebanon,

March 2021).

When the coronavirus continued to spread around the world, closure of

educational institutions was implemented by the government of India.

Therefore, schools were forced to shift to online based learning to be able to still

learn while in the midst of a pandemic. In this study, the researchers conduct an

online based survey using their prepared questionnaires that could help them in

their objective in determining how online classes affect the students and

teachers (Selvarah et al., 2021).

Based on the result, as the students are studying in this new mode of
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

learning there are 76% of the students that they surveyed said that network

connectivity issues are one of their problems in accessing online classes. There

are also 6% of the students who said that interrupted electricity has badly

affected them (Selvarah et al., 2021). Furthermore, 73.5% of the students are

more attentive in an online based learning than in a regular class. However, as

the students encountered different difficulties in online class, a majority of 94%

said that they were more comfortable in regular class than in online class.

Regular classes are way better in terms of knowledge said by the students and

teachers (Selvarah et al., 2021).

The pandemic process has spread to other countries, including Turkey.

And during the pandemic’s timeframe, the 2019-2020 Academic Year through

Isparta University of Applied Sciences was prolonged. The Republic of Turkey

Ministry of Health declared a COVID-19

pandemic. It has been announced that formal education at universities will be

suspended as of currently. Universities decided to use distance education as part

of the COVID-19 measures. Moreover, the focus of this research is to find out

what knowledge and views of students about distance education also known as

E-learning in the Pandemic Process.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

This study conducted by Yılmaz İnce, Kabul, & Diler (2020) established

that there seem to be numerous studies in the relevant literature on the benefits

and drawbacks of distance learning. The questionnaire questions were created

by reviewing previous survey studies in this field. Furthermore, by soliciting the

advice of three experts with significant experience in distance education. At this

point, after preparing draft questionnaire questions, the questionnaire was

administered face-to-face to ten people in terms of improving the questionnaire,

eliminating potential issues and failings in the process, and achieving the desired

outcome consistently. Therefore, it has been revealed students indicated that

they were dissatisfied with the system’s video (X = 2.43) and sound (X = 2.33)

quality. In the distance education system, live lessons are provided. The students

were educated on the internet and device quality, when the internet speed slows

down, the audio and camera optimizations that should be done. Part of the issue

has been solved by the fact that courses registered in the student information

system can be followed. However, when respondents compared formal

education to distance education, it was determined that they preferred formal

education. They came to believe that formal education was more efficient When

the questionnaires were analyzed using the t-test, It was determined that the

participants’ internet and non-telephone internet influences their views of

distance education.

18
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

As every country has been affected by the spread of the coronavirus, the

University of Jordan and Al-Zaytoonah University shifted to online learning

while in the midst of a pandemic (Mahmoud Maqableh & Mohammad Alia,

2021). The researchers conducted this study in three main phases: phase 1 with

483 respondents focuses on the student’s satisfaction in shifting to online

learning; phase 2 with 853 respondents in examining the positive and negative

aspect of online class; phase 3 with 60 respondents focuses on knowing the

factors behind dissatisfaction of students (Mahmoud Maqableh & Mohammad

Alia, 2021).

As discussed in the findings, 29.4% said that they are satisfied with this

shifting to online learning that is being implemented by the government in

phase 1. On the other hand, 41% are dissatisfied (Mahmoud Maqableh &

Mohammad Alia, 2021). Moreover, the researchers findings in phase 2 garnered

an average of 76.5% response that said that online learning is much better in

terms of saving time and money. In addition, 79.2% said that it is more safe in

this online learning (Mahmoud Maqableh & Mohammad Alia, 2021). However,

despite the fact that online learning is safe and effective, a majority of the

students said that there’s a lot more school work than in traditional learning.

Additionally, most of the respondents in the result in phase 3 said that in online
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

class they easily get distracted and also more than half of the respondents are

facing psychological issues while they are in online class (Mahmoud Maqableh &

Mohammad Alia, 2021).

Online learning was the best solution for continuing education during the

pandemic, especially in tertiary education. This study aims to determine the

challenges and obstacles confronted by English language learners (EFL) in

Science and Arts College, Alula, Taibah University, Saudi Arabia, during

switching to online learning in the second semester of 2020 due to the COVID-19

pandemic (Mahyoob, December 2020). The researchers applied a descriptive

statistical method using a survey-based questionnaire with 184 participants to

find out the main problems that affect or influence online EFL learning during

COVID-19, specifically related to technical, academic, and communication

challenges.

As discussed based on the result, many students (more than 30%) missed

many tasks, duties, and communications with teachers, which are essential in

the educational process activities (Mahyoob, December 2020, p. 9). The results

indicated some technical issues in using the Blackboard tool, such as online class

access, class materials downloading, audio, and video playing. They also figure

out from the result that most of the students are coming from remote towns
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

where the network is experiencing pressure due to the COVID-19 crisis as all the

students, teachers, and most of the other sectors shifted to work online.

Learners confronted some difficulties accessing online lessons, materials

downloading, online exams conducting, etc., students reported these issues as

the most significant issue (Mahyoob, December 2020, p. 9-10).

Theoretical Framework

This study is supported by the theory of Social Constructivism which

was developed by Soviet psychologist Lev Vygotsky(1896-1934). Thus, Several

education theorists, including Lev Vygotsky, John Dewey, and Jean Piaget,

worked in tandem with behaviorism and cognitivism. Their goal with social

constructionism was to describe and explain teaching and learning as complex

interactive social phenomena involving teachers and students. Vygotsky

proposed that learning is problem solving and that the social environment

influences learning. The development of problem-solving solutions is the

foundation of the learning process. On the other hand, the study conducted by

Baber, H. (2022) proposed that Social Interaction has a significant positive

impact on the effectiveness of online learning. However, in the presence of

social distance norms, this effect is reduced because people prioritize

continuous learning and saving lives over socializing in the online environment.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

The collaborative process of learning is essential for social

constructivism. People’s interactions with one another, their culture, and

society benefit the entire shape of their knowledge. Students rely on others to

help them build their foundations, and having to learn from others helps they

build their own knowledge and reality. The study conducted by Sadeghi M. In

this paper, the researcher aims to discuss history and theories of distance

learning, review literature on distant learning, state advantages and

disadvantages of distance learning, express implications of the study to learners

and teachers, and finally mention suggestions for improving distance learning.

Distance education, which is so different from traditional education, consists of

studying from home where students and teachers are physically distant while

classroom learning is the type of education system in which the learners and the

teachers work under one roof.

Electronic means are used to keep students in touch with teachers,

provide access to communication between students and bridge the gap and

distribute educational material through distance learning programs. The study

CHAPTER 3
Research Methodology

This chapter briefly discusses the research design, the locale and
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

population of the study, the instrumentation, the data gathering procedure to be

used in obtaining pertinent data, the ethical considerations and the validation of

the instrument.

Research Design

The quantitative approach and descriptive survey research methodology

were used in this study. Descriptive-survey research covers investigations that

provide relevant information about the elements that were prevalent at the

period. It reported and interpreted what was happening at the time, as well as

ongoing processes, perceived effects, and emerging trends. Furthermore,

descriptive survey research placed a premium on the interpretation of data or

the importance of what is described. It contains research and literature that

provide data on the current situation of the variables under question.

It became qualitative research because of the data, explanation and the way we

wrote it is in a more explanatory and more defined words and we also have

gathered the opinions and perspectives of different people for further

knowledge and understanding because we need a lot of purpose in this study.

We need a lot of different sayings. It helps our research to be more detailed and

well-written.

Population and Sampling

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

The researcher just had to determine the population before collecting

the sample. This study’ population is made up of ten (10) Grade 11 students

from Our Lady of Fatima, Antipolo Campus

in the 2021-2022 academic year.

In this study, purposive sampling has been used by the researcher to acquire the

sample. Purposive sampling, according to Arikunto (2010:183), is the process of

selecting a sample by taking a subject that is not based on the level or area, but

it is taken based on the specific purpose.

The respondents for this research were selected on purpose because the

researcher believes that by using sound judgment, they can obtain a

representative sample while saving time and money (Black K, 2010). The

researchers gather information from the best-fitting respondents, those who are

sufficiently knowledgeable about the topic of interest. As a result, respondents

are expected to be interviewed and answer the questionnaire with such reading

and comprehension skills.

of this study will be coming from

the Grade 11 students of Our Lady

of Fatima University – Antipolo Campus.

The Our Lady of Fatima University – Antipolo Campus was built in 2008.

Presently, the Antipolo campus has expanded to four modern buildings built in

its sprawling campus overlooking the Metro Manila Skyline. The school’s

address is at Km. 23 Sumulong Highway Brgy. Sta. Cruz,Antipolo City, Rizal,

Philippines.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

We conducted our research here in Olfu because we all know that it is the

easiest and convenient way to perform and to ask our interview because of our

situation nowadays and I know that it is more flexible if we will do here because

this is our own school it may helps the compatibility and our connection to have

a more definitive talk

Research Instruments

This study aims to know the common problems in a new mode of

learning in Our Lady of Fatima University. Online surveys and

interviews using zoom were used because of the pandemic. We selected

random students from Our Lady of Fatima University to answer the

question. The interviewers asked the selected students if they want to

answer the question using Google form or zoom meeting. Before the

respondents answered the questionnaire, they were oriented about the

objectives of the study and the extent of their involvement. The open-

ended questions asked about other challenges that students

experienced, the impact of the pandemic on the intensity or extent of the

challenges they experienced, and the strategies that the participants

employed to overcome the different types of challenges during online

27
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

learning.

The main questions covered questions relating to the students overall

attitude toward online learning during the pandemic, the challenges

they experienced and the impact of the pandemic on students’

challenges, and the strategies they employed to address the challenges.

Students were allowed to ask for clarification and additional

explanations relating to the questionnaire content. The interviewers

ensured that the participants were comfortable and open to talk freely.

These were done by informing the participants that there are no wrong

responses and that their identity and responses would be handled with

the utmost confidentiality. With the permission of the participants, the

interview was recorded to ensure that all relevant information was

accurately captured for transcription and analysis.

Research Ethics
In this study, we sought for someone who could answer our survey
inquiries so that we could provide them with information. And the replies we
received were not coerced into interviewing us; instead, they chose to do so. We
conducted interviews through Google Form for those who wanted to provide
personal information and, finally, for those who wanted to be questioned and
get clear and thorough information.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

We were thrilled that nothing went wrong when we were interviewing the
respondents via Google Meet because we were attentive to question them about
their perspectives and about items that were relevant to our issue.

Data Collection

In gathering data, the researchers constructed a questionnaire.

The researcher conducts the research in Our Lady of Fatima Antipolo

Campus through interviews and surveys. The researcher will ask

respondents their grade and section to know if they’re qualified to

conduct an interview or survey, the researchers assured that the

respondents will answer with all honesty.

The researcher uses purposive sampling, in this study the

goal of the researcher is to determine if the new mode of learning is

effective for grade 11 OLFU students. After the respondents answer all

the questionnaires, the researchers will collect the data, the data will be

managed and arranged.

Data Analysis

29
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

The researchers are focused on what will be the outcome of

the conducted interview and survey, to know what are the problems

that the Grade 11 students are experiencing in the new mode of

learning. When the data is gathered, the researchers read the answers

and listen to the recorded interview to analyze the data.

The analysis method used in this study is thematic analysis. Thematic

analysis is widely used as this is a flexible method to use in qualitative

research (Kiger and Varpio, 2020). In addition, thematic analysis is a

method which helps the researchers in analyzing and identifying

patterns to organize the data (Braun and Clarke, 2017). The researchers

familiarized first with the data obtained. Next is creating codes from the

gathered answers of the respondents, then organizing those codes to

search for themes. When the themes are created, the researchers will

review it to define and name those themes.

which makes things more harder to manage
●Yes, as we all know we were forced to lock
ourselves in our home due to the pandemic and the
government implemented that we should have a new
mode of learning which is distance learning and of
that is online learning. Due to this situation we are
still struggling to adjust and adapt to this new way of
learning and it affected some of the students' mental
and physical health negatively.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

●For me, it is just right. Online learning has both

advantages and disadvantages, and I experience
both sides of it, so I can’t really say if it’s effective
or not. ●effective, sometimes depends
●I can’t totally say that it is effective because
sometimes when our internet is poor at home I
can’t attend class and answer activities that need to
be done already.
●It is effective but it is much better if we are in a
Regular class.
●Online learning is certainly the more effective
option for students, but it’s also better for the
environment.
●Not really effective
●It’s not quite effective. However, I could still
cope with it.
●It is effective because I think I’ve gained lots of
knowledge and experience that I might apply in
real life situations. The performance tasks and
39 activities might be exhausting but it allowed us to
think critically that really helped with our
cognitive skills.

12. What are the problems that you are engaging in ● Stress
currently that some other students like you can relate to? ●When the teacher is discussing the lesson, I
understand it well but, when I am answering the
assignment, activity or quiz I suddenly become
mentally blocked and get a low score.
●Project efficiency
●Procrastinating
●Some of my problems would be that I cannot
focus sometimes on the discussion.
●Understanding the different learning challenges
among the students.
●Lot of responsibilities to do in both the house and
school.
●Aside from the personal problems, I guess they’re
also suffering from the slow internet connection.
●Being unproductive, sometimes there are just
days that you want to relax and rest. So sometimes
it leads to procrastination but as a student who
doesn’t like being under pressure I still make them
ahead of the time to make sure that I can pass it on
the allotted time
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

13. How difficult or easy is it to use the distance learning ●very easy
technology? (Computer, tablet, learning application, etc.)? ●It is not that difficult for me to use these
technologies or applications because there is the
internet that will help us and give us instructions or
directions on how to use a particular app or
technology.
●I would rate 7/10
●For me, it is not difficult for me to use the
distance learning technology because there’s
instructions online that I can simply look at or
search and it really helps a lot.
●It is difficult especially the Learning application
●Not that much difficult
●I find it easy to use since I am aware of how to
use

technology.
●It is confusing at first, but we are guided by our
teachers on how to use learning applications and
canvas to make sure that everyone can utilize the
services.

14. How difficult or easy is it for you to connect to the ●it’s a piece of cake
internet to access your schoolwork? ●I easily connect to our internet but there were
times that my internet connection was poor
especially when it was raining. ●I would rate my
access 9/10
●It’s easy to connect to the internet but it's getting
difficult when it suddenly becomes a poor internet.
●It is really easy for me, because even though we
were still in face-to -face classes we also used the
internet to browse and research some stuff for our
assignments and projects.
● very Difficult
●it is easy for me since we have wi-fi in our home
●It’s difficult for me to connect to the internet since
it’s sometimes slower than usual
●It is difficult for me because we live in a high
altitude area and we don’t have any reception at all.
But we managed to have access to the internet, but
there are still some issues since our internet
provider is PLDT.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

15. In your own experience, which mode of learning do ●For me, it’s face to face, but because there’s no
you feel more comfortable in learning? Why? announcement. I’d rather learn online because it
eliminates the need for daily.
●I am getting more comfortable in online learning
because I am alone learning here in our house in
front of my laptop and don’t have to go anywhere.
Since the epidemic started, I became stuck in our
house for a long time, and due to this I became
afraid of socializing with others. ●Both regular and
online are pretty manageable
. ●For now, I am comfortable learning through
online because I’m already attached to it
. ●Regular classes,because Like I mentioned on the
other question,it is much more effective if it is face
to face class rather than online classes.
●Hence we can conclude that nowadays, the most
effective mode of learning is blended learning
. ●Face to Face since I can actually see my
classmates and teacher and interact with them.
●From my own experience, I feel more comfortable
learning through the traditional way. It makes me
focus and understand the topic more effectively than
online learning.
●I feel more comfortable with online learning since
we have more time and can do pretty much all the
work with the help of technology. I was able to have
new friends that also helped me cope with this new
mode of learning.

16. In your own experience, what are the factors that you ●Thinking skills

learning? Online classes make me too lazy to learn since

we are just having class in our house, and I
believe our house is supposed to be a place
where we should rest, not work or study.
●Adjusting my time frame
●I need to discipline myself especially in
managing my schedule so that I don’t miss any
tasks or deadlines that I need to deal with.
●There’s a lot of factors that can affect the
study of each student. It is up to them on how
they’re going to cope up with the new mode of
learning
●Faced some unexpected challenges that you
weren’t anticipating.
●I still do my school work ahead of time.
●The Factors that I’ve experienced in adapting
to the new mode of learning are the unstable
network, distraction, and difficulty in learning
the topics.
●For me to be able to adapt I try to manage my
time efficiently such as making my to-do list
and giving myself free time as well to let my
mind rest and I think that helped me cope up
with this situation. And I make sure to eat on
time and have enough sleep for my body to
function properly

Discussion

From the result that contains the exact answers of the participants

to the interview/surveyed questions, the Thematic Analysis as the

researchers’ analysis of method will be placed in the Discussion part.

47
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

As said, most researchers consider Thematic Analysis to be a

very useful method in capturing the intricacies of meaning within a

data. These data will be the participants’ responses to each of the

questions, and by re-reading it respectively; the researchers may find

significant codes/labels from the answers that can help produce a theme.

The themes that will be developed by the researchers are interpreted

carefully.

Firstly, the researchers classify and categorize the 20 questions by their

concept/topic; this will help the process of data analyzation easier.

As you can see, the titles on each of the columns will directly be the

main themes used by the researchers that will summarize all the

views/opinions collected on the topic. The coding will be executed in

the data collected from the questionnaire. Remember that the coding

process will not be placed here, just the develop themes and their

interpretation.

_______________________________________________________________

Five (5) main themes were found in line with the obtained data in this

research. Each of the themes was interpreted by indicating the answers of

the 10 participants.

Theme 1. Encountered Problems

After the outbreak of the Covid-19, schools and universities

instantly adjusted their systems and switched to online learning

wherein students are required to stay at their home but to attend

online-based learning. It’s been 2 years until now; students are still

50
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

adapting to this new normal and trying to deal with it. By executing an

interview/survey among Grade 11 students in OLFU, these are their

problems facing today:

— The lack of motivation can lead to lack of productivity.

— Distracted. Based on the Foreign Studies under RRL, under

Phase 3, 60 respondents who are dissatisfied with online

learning noted that, “most of the respondents said that in online

class, they are easily distracted” (Mahmoud Maqableh &

Mohammad Alia, 2021). Being distracted at home while studying

can either be because of ‘doing household chores’ or due to

‘personal problems’.

— Time Management. Either an advantage or disadvantage to the

students.

— Hard to cope up with.

— Communication Challenges. Limited interaction/socialization

between and among students. Loss of social skills.

— Outdated Gadgets, Unstable Internet Connection & Limited

Resources. These are the common problems that the students

face every day. Schools must know that not every student is
51
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

capable of having gadgets or any kind of technology, or to

provide an internet connection at home (due to high cost) that

may result in limiting his/her references in studying.

Theme 2. Preferred Mode of Learning

Majority of the students preferred Face to Face Classes

(Traditional Learning) than in Online Learning, since there are no

barriers that may affect them. Barriers like internet connection &

distractions. They are favorable to the traditional way because of these

facts; interactive learning, active participation and with full-

attention (focused) in class. This implies that the efficiency of

knowledge transfer in Face to face is more effective. One of the reasons

also is

the comfortableness of the students, either at home or at school.

According to the Foreign Studies under RRL, “a majority of 94% said

that they were more comfortable in regular class than in online class.

Regular classes are way better in terms of knowledge said by the

students and teachers'' (Selvarah et al., 2021). But based on the data,

most say Face to face, while some answer Online since they are getting

used to this new normal, and somehow others say they are comfortable
52
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

in both modes of learning.

Theme 3. Dealing with the New Normal (Online Learning)

It takes time to adjust, even though it’s been 2 years since the

pandemic started, students are still having a hard time managing Online

Learning. Obviously, 9 participants answered yes while there is one (1)

that says no, from the reason that he/she is able to set his/her time

well. Based upon the results, the students knew that adjusting to the

new normal will have their own conflicts in managing it, so they just

adapt to it diligently. One (1) participant stated, “Yes, we have different

situations and not all students are privileged to cope with this new way

of learning. They might encounter more difficulties when it comes to

having unstable internet connection, not having their own device to use,

financial problems, and their health.” From this statement, the

researchers come up that ‘students have their personal own

issues/situations’, but looking it in a positive way; if each of the

students has the courage to learn the process of online learning

since people are now living in modern times, they will overcome these

conflicts and try to use this new mode of learning as their tool to

do better in studying. One factor that may affect their interest in online
53
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

learning is the lesson presented by the teachers, how the topics are

presented in a way that they do not lose interest.

Two of the questions asked in the survey, is the advantages and

effectiveness brought of online learning, and these are the provided

feedbacks of the students:

— Lower cost of tuition. It depends on the school.

— Convenient and Flexible. Students can do their

activities/modules anytime and anywhere not until due, with

the help of technology.

— Not hassle/Unlimited Resources. With the help of the internet

and search engines, students are provided with lots of

references to various topics, this will help them in a much easier

way to do activities and quizzes.

— Discipline in Time Management. A participant stated, “I think

the advantage of online learning is that I learn more to discipline

myself when it comes to managing my time.” Practicing time

management will help the students in getting everything done at

the last minute, not cramming before the due time/date and

especially doing the important things first rather than

unnecessary things.

In reference to (Mahmoud Maqableh & Mohammad Alia, 2021)

under RRL Foreign Studies, “the researchers findings in phase 2

garnered an average of 76.5% response that said that online learning

is much more better in terms of saving time and money” and “79.2%

said that it is more safe in this online learning”.

Theme 4. Factors Affected by Online Learning

There is a significant increase in various factors affecting the

students due to Online Learning. Looking at the feedback of the

participants to the given questions, some did affect them in a positive

way including; their thinking

skills, managing their time-frame, being organized like making to-do

lists, especially rewarding themselves to have free-time or getting

enough sleep. While others experienced oppositely; becoming lazy and

difficulty in learning. Undoubtedly, one factor that may be affected is

55
the participants’ grades. Four (4) participants said that it affects their
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

grades in a good way and in a bad way, meaning their grades are higher

now than they were on Face to face, while the others are not able to get

higher grades this time than last time. Social life of the students may

also be affected by Online Learning, since they are staying at home all

the time and they limit the use of social media, their social skills may

decrease resulting in the student’s low self-esteem and lack of

participation in class.

Theme 5. Effectiveness of Technology

Based on the data, the participants find it easy to use distance

learning technology. There is no doubt that these participants are able

to utilize this since they are living in the modern day wherein

technology is in demand. They grow up with technology on their side.

Talking about the help of technology to online learning, it is greatly used

because instructions are provided online, students are aware to use

learning applications, if not, teachers guide them on how to utilize the

service of the app.

For instance, it stated in the result ‘it’s just a piece of cake for

56 to access their schoolwork’. Some

them to connect to the internet

students say that they find it convenient to answer modules through the

internet not in papers because it offers a wide range of services that can

help pass a good quality output, and faster way to answer quizzes and

exams with no errors. Others find it inconvenient, since there may be an

instance that the internet is not stable while they answer modules.

Majority of the participants can provide their own internet and gadgets,

considering that internet and gadgets are the main requirements in

Online Learning.

In general, by the use of Thematic Analysis, the researchers come

up from the discussion, that all 10 participants have their own

situations/personal issues that are the basis why they do have a

problem to the new mode of learning, ‘Online-based Learning’ which is

the reason why students are comparing the 2 modes of learning

(traditional way or the new normal). Still, until today we are

experiencing the effect of the pandemic, students must adjust and adapt

to dealing with the new normal (Online Learning) even though there

are factors that may arise. Students need to embrace the value and

advantage of technology (i.e. internet & gadgets) for the reason that this

is the only key for them to do their best in their studies and to use it as

57 difficulties. From that, students may

their strengths to overcome those

consider and accept that this is the new normal.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS

The purpose of this study was to know the impact of teaching

methodologies on academic performance of HUMSS 11 students . There

were six respondents who were purposively chosen. The study used

qualitative research design. The main tool in gathering data was an

interview. The data were analyzed and interpreted using thematic

analysis.

Conclusion

58
We are all aware of some common problems that may affect the study of

grade 11 in a new mode of learning but One other important aspect that

institutions need to keep top of mind during this the shift to new technologies

and course delivery methods is accessibility and the inclusion of all students. If

students need to access their course materials, lectures, and learning activities

online, they need to have access to proper hardware and reliable networks.

Institutions must not let differences in disability or socioeconomic status hinder

access to learning and other institutional

resources. All of the strategic plans for this academic year must be designed to

ensure that all students have access to their courses and other necessary

services and that student experiences are equivalent, no matter where the

students are located or whether they have a disability. Moreover, These

considerations also apply to faculty, some of whom have disabilities and many

of whom are being asked to teach and otherwise interact with students from a

Difficulties and the confusion that often results are difficult to detect, manage,

and respond to in digital learning environments and large classes compared to

smaller group face-to-face settings. Despite this, in this paper we have argued

that difficulties and confusion are important in the process of learning,

particularly when students are developing more sophisticated understandings

of complex concepts. Work on desirable difficulties, impasse driven learning,

productive failure, and pure discovery-based learning all provide clues as to

how confusion could be beneficial for learning.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of the study, here are some recommendations to be

considered:

1. The school should implement blended learning.

60
- One of the biggest reasons why the students couldn’t keep up with the lessons
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

is due to the internet connection. The school should implement blended learning

for the students where there will be half face-to-face and online class. The

students who are having a slow internet connection and having a hard time

coping with the new mode of learning can volunteer in the face-to-face classes

where they will be more comfortable in learning.

2. The teachers should identify the students who may be struggling in classes.

- Not all the students are not able to keep up with the lessons that the teacher

discussed. The teacher should always check if there is someone who is

struggling in class so that he/she can consult and help them get motivated to

learn and keep up with the lessons that will be discussed.

Recommendation for Future Research

Since this study only focuses on the grade 11 students of Our Lady of

Fatima University, it is recommended that further studies be carried out on

students from different grade levels and schools to see whether there are any

similarities in the findings. The data that we have gathered may be different

depending on what you will gather since all students have different opinions

and skills.
