Guidelines for creating videos

For your Video assignments, this document gives you some generic guidelines. You may or may not have
given a speech on video before; the following pointers will help you deliver a seamless video. Keep these
in mind while recording. These may seem minor, but they are essential and make a huge difference. I do
not recommend making massive investments for your video, but tiny edits that will make your work look
professional.

Before recording the video –

1. Chose a good location for the shoot.

2. Make sure you place the device (preferably a laptop and not a mobile) at eye level.

3. Do not keep the laptop on the bed or a table lower than your eye level. You could place the laptop on
a chair positioned on top of a table to get the right height.

4. You could stand at a slight distance so that the top half of your body is seen. This way, your audience
can see your gestures and facial expressions. Don’t stand too far away from the laptop; otherwise, you
will not be audible.

5. Ensure you are standing facing the light. Close the windows to block outside noise.

6. Turning off the fan is preferable. In a video recording, the noise of a fan is quite audible.

7. Keep your mobile on silent mode, so that you are not disturbed.

8. Apps like WhatsApp web, among others, can interfere with your videos. Please turn them off before
recording.

9. Check if the microphone and camera are functioning properly.

10. Dress appropriately. Any formal or semi-formal wear is preferable.

11. Ensure the background is good. Unmade beds or things strewn all over may be a distraction.

While recording the video -

1. Now, you are about to start recording. Take a deep breath, relax and start with a smile.

2. Make sure you look at the camera and not at your image on the screen. This way, eye contact is
maintained with the person watching the video. Looking at your image will also distract you and
obstruct your flow of thoughts. You may mark or place a photo near the camera, so that you can focus
there.

3. Do not keep your hands inside your pockets or clasp fingers; these are signs of nervousness.

4. Avoid moving back and forth. Stand at one position in a calm manner.

5. Avoid narrating from a script from start to finish. Instead, make flashcards and refer to them
periodically. You can also clip the flashcards to your laptop. This is to ensure that eye contact is
maintained.

After recording the video -

1. If you are using any background music, ensure it is lowered when you start speaking. Otherwise, it will
drown your voice.

2. Use other visual aids such as short text or bullet points, appropriate pictures or slides that may be
relevant to your speech. Let your creative juices flow.

3. You need not submit the first video you record. You could redo it until you are satisfied and upload
the final version. The more you practice, the better your output.

4. Save the final video in an MP4 format with the following naming convention
“RollNumber_FirstNameLastName.mp4”.

5. Please test it before you upload. Many times, there are tech challenges when you work on a MAC or
Windows which have nonstandard codecs. Sometimes, the audio tuning goes haywire. Or sometimes,
there are glitches in the final version. Or an unwanted sound. Attention to tiny details is important too.
So please eliminate them.

Please note the following important points

1. If your video does not come on time, 50% penalty will be imposed.
2. If your video is not in mp4 format, 100% penalty will be imposed.
