Separation Season offers each position group two training program options. Each
training program is eight weeks and has 3-4 days of training per week. Players will
select one of the following two training programs.
• Program A is designed for players who have access to a Goal and a Pass-Back device
(Wall, Bench, Step, etc.) all at one location. This means the player can perform any
exercise in the Program at the same location during a training session.
• Program B is designed for players who have access to a Goal and and a Pass-Back
device at different locations.
• 2-3 training sessions each week are designed to be on the field with the goal.
These sessions focus on Dribbling, Crossing, Shooting, and Final Pass actions.
• 1-2 of the training sessions each week are designed to be with the Pass-Back
device (Wall, Bench, Step, etc.), and are referred to as “Wall Days” in the
program. These sessions focus on Passing and Dribbling actions.
** Players must have a Goal and a Pass-Back device in order to perform the program in
full. However, if they do not have access to either, there is a menu of drills in the “Ball
Mastery” section of the book with drills that only require a ball. They can perform these
drills, or extra sets of the drills in the program they are able to. 1

Program Notes (How to Read) Back
Program Key
• Equipment: For almost every drill you will need a ball and several cones. If you do not have cones you can be
creative and use shoes, socks, or other small items. For passing exercises you can use a wall, rebounder, bench,
etc.
• The only drills you will need two balls are the Two Shot Sequences. These drills are for Strikers /
Attacking Midfielders, Wingers, and Central Midfielders. Normally there will be 1-2 of these drills each
week. If you only have one ball, you can do extra sets of the other shooting drills.
• Session Plans: It is a good idea to read the session plan and watch the videos of all the drills before you go out
to train. If you are stopping during the middle of the session between every drill to watch the demo videos, it
is going to slow things down for you quite a bit. This is a good habit to get into as a player.
• Variations and Progressions: The program has four phases that each run for two weeks. The first three phases in
complexity over time. The last phase will continue this pattern, but also re-incorporate some of the previous
drills and variations, with the expectation being that you will be able to do them
• Partner Training: This is an individual training program. However, if you have a partner to train with, that is
fantastic! This is a great idea for Passing, Shooting, and Crossing drills. For dribbling and ball mastery drills,
you can take turns where one is working and one is resting.

Dribbling Drills

Cone Dribbling
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 8 Cones
• First 7 Cones: 1 Yard Apart
• Last Cone: 5 Yards From 7th Cone
Instructions
• Dribble between the first 7 cones
• After coming out of the last gap, speed dribble in a loop around the last cone
• Dribble back through the 7 cones to the starting spot
Coaching Points
• Accelerate aggressively after coming out of the last cone. This builds the habit of taking
your space quickly after getting out of a tight situation on the field.
• As you get more comfortable with this drill you can increase your speed or move the cones
closer together to challenge yourself.
57
Zig-Zag Dribbling
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 6 Cones in a Zig Zag formation
• Length of course should be 10-15 Yards
Instructions
• Dribble around the outside of the Zig Zag course using the assigned skill at each cone
• Once you reach the end cone, circle around with a tight dribble and go back through the course
• Going up and back is one set of the drill
Coaching Points
• Your dribble should keep you tight to the cones and lines of the course
• This drill is more about close control and getting familiar using different surfaces of the
foot than it is about creating separation from the defender. That will come in more
advanced dribbling drills and ones that add in end product.
• If this variation or any others are new or difficult for you make sure you can complete a
full rep properly before building up your speed.
58
Changing Gears
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 9 Cones
• First 3 Cones: 1 Yard Apart
• Second 3 Cones: 2-3 Yards Apart
• Last 3 Cones: 1 Yard Apart
• 8-10 Yards Between Each Set of Cones
Instructions
• Dribble between the first set of 3 cones
• Accelerate to the second set
• Control your body and the ball through the second set
• Accelerate to the third set
• Control your body and the ball through the third set
• Round the last cone and return through the course
Coaching Points
• The main focus of this drill is body control and keeping the ball close to you as you change speeds.
• There are no variations of the drill asking for any moves, so feel free to be creative. With that said, the
priority is moving through the course at high speeds, so don't feel the need to over-complicate it.
59
5 Yard Turns
5 Yards
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 4 Cones or 2 Lines set up 5 Yards apart from each other
Instructions
• Start on one line with the ball
• Dribble to the other line and execute the turn as close to the line as possible
• Repeat back and forth for the entire set
Coaching Points
• Being able to quickly change direction to find space is critical in the game. This drill gives you a
wide variety of ways to do that. Some you'll be familiar with right away. For the ones that are new
or challenging to you, start slowly and build your speed.
60
5-10 Turn Shu e
Yards
10
Yards
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 6 Cones or 3 Lines set up 5 Yards apart from each other
Instructions
• Start on one line with the ball
• Execute this drill like a 5-10 Yard suicide while dribbling the ball
• The turns that you use will be the same variations as the 5 Yard Turn Drill
Coaching Points
• In this drill you'll be using the same turns from the previous week.
• Adding in the 10 yard dribble will force you to break down and turn after building up more speed
• Make sure you perform the assigned turn when you hit the line at the end of the rep, don't just run
through the end line.
61
Cone Landmine Field
Set-Up
• 10-20 Cones
• Cones are scattered randomly in close proximity to each other
• Phone Timer or Stop Watch
Instructions
• Start outside the field of cones
• For the prescribed amount of time, freestyle dribble between the cones in the field.
• Use a stopwatch or phone timer to time the set
• Keep close control and try not to hit any of the cones
• Be creative, mix it up
Coaching Points
• Do not overthink your route as you go in and out of the field. Let your movements come naturally.
The purpose of this drill is increase your comfortability in tight spaces where you don't have time to
pre plan your actions.
• Stick to the rest time as closely as possible. There should be an aerobic conditioning component to
this drill that will make each set increasingly challenging. This will test your ability to maintain your
skill level as you fatigue.
• Feel free to re-scatter the cones in a different formation after a few sets if you want 62
T-Drill
Cone A
5 Yards
5 Yards
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 4 Cones in a ’T’ Shape
• Each Cone 5 Yards Apart
• Phone Timer or Stop Watch (Optional)
Instructions
• Start on Cone A
• Dribble toward Cone B
• Dribble toward Cone C
• Dribble toward Cone D
• Dribble back to Cone B
• Finish at Cone A
• ***Switch sides. Alternate going from Cone B to Cone C or D initially
• • Use a timer if possible to record your best time!
Coaching Points
• Effort in this drill should be maximal, so it is okay if you need slightly more recovery time in between reps.
• This is a great test of your body control and ability to accelerate and decelerate with the ball.
• If you do not have a timer it is no problem, but it is a great tool to have as it will give you feedback on your
speed for each rep!
63
Directional Air Control
5 Yards
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 4 Cones in a Diamond Shape
• Each Cone 5 Yards From Center
Instructions
• Juggle the ball high in the air.
• Control the ball with the assigned part of your body in the direction of one of the cones
• Keep good control, dribble around the cone and back to the start
• You can chose which cone you want to go towards. Be creative. Mix it up.
Coaching Points
• This drill is the first progression of controlling the ball out of the air. You will build into making
another action after your first touch (dribbling at the cone and exploding away, making a pass,
etc.). Use this drill to get comfortable with your first touch before moving into the progressions.
64
Directional Air Control to Move
5 Yards
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
Set-Up
• 4 Cones in a Diamond Shape
• Each Cone 5 Yards From Center
Instructions
• Juggle the ball high in the air.
• Control the ball with the assigned part of your body in the direction of one of the cones
• Attack the cone with the assigned 1v1 move and take one or two explosive touches into the space.
• You can chose which cone you want to go towards. Be creative. Mix it up.
Coaching Points
• Once you get by the cone/defender, make sure you change your speed. You can approach the
move a bit slower if you then explode past it for five yards. Change of speed on the dribble is
key to getting by a defender in a match.
65
Cone Line to Zig Zag to Speed Dribble
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Out
Red Line: Dribble Back
Set-Up
• 9 Cones
• First 4 Cones: Cone Line each 1 Yard Apart
• Second 4 Cones: Zig Zag Course 10-15 Yards in Length
• Last Cone: 3-5 Yards at the end of Zig Zag
Instructions
• Dribble between the cone line, to the zig zag, and around the end cone
• After circling the last cone, speed dribble all the way back to the beginning
Coaching Points
• All of the variations for this drill should be familiar, so challenge yourself to get through the
course quickly.
66
Cone Weave to Move and Return
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
Set-Up
• 10 Cones
• Cones are set up horizontally in a 4-2-4 pattern
• 5 Yards between each line of cones. 1 Yard between each cone
Instructions
• Start on either side of the first line of 4 cones
• Dribble through the first cone line and toward the middle two cones
• Make a move at the middle two cones toward the last line of 4 cones
• Go straight into a cone weave between the last line of 4 cones
• When you exit the last line, speed dribble back to the first line of cones. You should finish
on the same side that you started on
• Alternate the side you start on each set
Coaching Points
• Feel free to change and experiment with different variations going through the cone line
and different moves and the middle cones in this drill.
67
Cone Weave to Move 2x
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
Set-Up
• 12 Cones
• Cones are set up horizontally in a 4-2-4-2 pattern
• 5 Yards between each line of cones. 1 Yard between each cone
Instructions
• Start on either side of the first line of 4 cones
• Dribble through the first cone line and toward the first defender
• Make a move at the first defender toward the second of 4 cones
• Go straight into a cone weave between the second of 4 cones
• Exit the second line of 4 cones and attack the second defender with a move
• Accelerate into the space for 5-10 Yards
• Alternate the side you start on each set
Coaching Points
• This is a progression from the Cone Weave to Move and Return Drill. The same advice
applies from that drill in that you should experiment with different cone weave and 1v1
variations.
68
Diamond Dribbling
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
Cone A
Cone B
Cone C Cone E
Cone D
Set-Up
• 5 Cones in a ’+ shape'
• Each Cone 5 Yards Apart
• Phone Timer or Stop Watch
Instructions
• Start on Cone A
• Dribble toward Cone B
• Dribble toward Cone C
• Loop around Cone C back toward Cone B
• Continue the pattern until you make it all the way back to Cone A
• ***Switch sides each set. Alternate going from Cone B to Cone C or E initially
• Use a timer if possible to record your best time!
Coaching Points
• Effort in this drill should be maximal, so it is okay if you need slightly more recovery time in
between reps.
• This is a great test of your body control and ability to accelerate and decelerate with the ball.
• If you do not have a timer it is no problem, but it is a great tool to have as it will give you
feedback on your speed for each rep!
69
Full Turn, Cone Line, Move
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
Set-Up
• 10-14 Cones
• First 4 Cones or 2 Lines: 5x5 Yard box
• First 7 Cones: Cone Line with 1 Yard between each cone
• Last 1-2 Cones: 'Defender' stationed 5 Yards after the cone line
Instructions
• Start at the 5x5 Yard box facing away from the course
• Dribble and perform a turn on the back line of the box
• Accelerate toward the Cone Line and dribble through the Cone Line with the assigned variation
• Accelerate at the defender and perform a dribble move in either direction
• Accelerate for 5-10 Yards after your move
• Alternate the side you dribble toward each set
Coaching Points
• Accelerate aggressively after coming out of the Cone Line. This builds the habit of taking
your space quickly after getting out of a tight situation on the field.
• There should be another change of speed after your move at the last defender.
70
Air Control Turn, Tight Zig Zag Move
Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
Set-Up
• 7-10 Cones
• 2 Cones or 1 Starting Line
• 6 Cones in a Zig-Zag Formation 5 Yards from the starting line. Cones should be
half a yard apart.

Driven Laces Pass
Set-Up
• 4 Cones in a 5x5 Yard box
• Box is 20+ Yards in front of the Wall
• **If you do not have a wall during the session you can perform this drill by hitting
the passes into a goal or target
Instructions
• Perform either a Low, Medium or High Laces Pass at the wall
• As it comes back, try to keep your first touch in the box and play from there
Coaching Points
• Head and body over the ball
• Always start with low height passes and gradually move up. The form you have with
low driven passes gets you in a good rhythm and gives you good technical habits as
you try to play the ball over longer distances with more height.

Air Control to Driven Laces Pass
Set-Up
• 4 Cones in a 5x5 Yard box
• Box is 20+ Yards in front of the Wall
• **If you do not have a wall during the session you can perform this drill by hitting
the passes into a goal or target
Instructions
• Juggle the ball high in the air
• Control it on the ground and perform either a Low, Medium or High Laces
Pass at the wall
• As it comes back, try to go directly into your next rep
Coaching Points
• Minimize the number of touches and time it takes to control the ball from the air
and play your pass
• Head and body over the ball
• Always start with low height passes and gradually move up. The form you have
with low driven passes gets you in a good rhythm and gives you good technical
habits as you try to play the ball over longer distances with more height.
• As the video shows if you do not have a wall you can perform these passes into a
goal or target

Coaching Points
• Push the ball out from your body as you turn so you can hit the Driven Pass
with your next touch
• Head and body over the ball
• Always start with low height passes and gradually move up. The form you have
with low driven passes gets you in a good rhythm and gives you good technical
habits as you try to play the ball over longer distances with more height.

• Roll a self pass to into the middle of the box
• Take a touch to set the ball and hit a a Low, Medium or High Laces
Pass at the wall with your next touch
• Alternate feet each set
Coaching Points
• Try to only take one set up touch from the self-pass. This simulates stepping in to
receive a pass before playing a long ball like you would in a match.
• Head and body over the ball
• Always start with low height passes and gradually move up. The form you have with
low driven passes gets you in a good rhythm and gives you good technical habits as
you try to play the ball over longer distances with more height.

Air Control to Half Volley
5 Yards
Set-Up
• 4 Cones in a 5x5 Yard box
• Box is 10-15 Yards in front of the Wall
Instructions
• ***If your wall is low work on keeping your body over the ball on the volley
Coaching Points
• Try to strike the ball off of one bounce even if the bounce is not great. You are
almost never going to have enough time in a game to let the ball bounce twice
before hitting a volley.
• Keeping your first touch in the box is really key in this particular drill because it
simulates an action around the penalty area where space is at a premium.
• Eye on the ball throughout the entire shot.

Note:
Black Line: Dribble Path
White Line: Final Pass Line
Set-Up
• 10 Cones
• Cones are set up horizontally in a 4-2-4 pattern
• 5 Yards between each line of cones. 1 Yard between each cone
• 1-2 Passing Targets 5 Yards behind the first cone line
Instructions
• Start on either side of the first line of 4 cones
• Dribble through the first cone line and toward the middle two cones
• Make a move at the middle two cones toward the last line of 4 cones
• Go straight into a cone weave between the last line of 4 cones
• When you exit the last line, turn and play a pass into the passing target directly in front of you
• Alternate the side you start on each set
Coaching Points
• This adds some final product into the previous drills with the 4-2-4 cone set-up. This
challenges your ability to execute under fatigue after a lengthy dribbling sequence.

• Perform a loop dribble around the top cone back toward the defender
• Perform a move going either side of the defender and shoot
• Alternate going left and right each set.
Coaching Points
• The main difference between this exercise and the Speed Dribble to shot is you
have less of a run up to perform your move. You won't always have 10-15 yards of
space to set up and time a 1v1 move as you approach the defender, so this drill
narrows the space of that. It may not seem like a massive difference in the videos
but it is something you will notice when performing the exercises.

Set-Up
• 4 Cones
• One cone as a starting position on top of the penalty box in a wide channel
• Top cone 5 Yards out from penalty box
• One 'defender' inside the penalty box
Instructions
• Start with the ball next to the starting cone facing away from goal toward the
top cone (alternate sides each set)
• Roll a self pass towards goal and sprint toward the top cone. Try to weight the
pass so it stops short of the defender
• Sprint around the top cone back toward goal
• Take a touch by the defender and shoot
• Complete all sets on one side before moving to the other
Coaching Points
• This drill simulates either receiving a through ball or taking a heavy touch and being closed
down by a defender. You'll be coming in at full speed at be forced to take a touch quickly by
the defender and get your shot off.
• This self pass should be a bit softer than the version of this drill without the cone defender.
• From the wide angle, you are always cutting in and hitting a finesse shot. Use right foot on
the left side and left foot on the right side.

White Spots: Shot Locations
**This diagram is for a right foot shot, perform the exercise on both sides
Set-Up
• 3 Cones
• One cone inside the penalty box
• One 'defender' inside the penalty box in a central position
• Ball is placed in front of the defender
Instructions
• Start next to the defender
• Check away to the back cone
• Check back to the ball and take a one touch turn by the defender into the penalty box
• Try to shoot quickly after turning the defender
• Complete all sets on one side before moving to the other
Coaching Points
• The initial check away in this drill is very important. There should be a change in
speed from when you make your counter-move from the back cone to in front of the
defender. The purpose of this is to simulate receiving a pass from one of your
teammates in a game.
• Ideally you can perform the turn in one touch. You will not have time to take
multiple touches on the half turn in this area of the field most times.

Instructions
• Juggle the ball high in the air
• Control it out of the air and with your next touch hit either a full or half volley
on goal
• Alternate feet each set
Coaching Points
• Like the Two Touch Control and Shot drill, be strict with yourself an take pride
in your reps. Keep your touch inside the box. Work on consistently staying over
the ball and keeping your volleys on target.

• 2 Cones inside the penalty box as cut back points
Instructions
• Juggle the ball high in the air
• Control the ball on the turn through one of the gaps at the front of the square
• Cut back inside before you hit the cone inside the penalty box
• Shoot on goal with your next touch
Coaching Points
• This drill requires you to keep your first touch out of the air tight so you can make a
quick cut back before hitting the last cone
153
Box Control to Loop Dribble and Shot (Central)
Note:
Black Line: Dribble / Touch Path
White Spots: Shot Locations
Set-Up
• 5-7 Cones
• One 5x5 Yard Box on top of the penalty box in a central position
• One 'defender' on the edge of the 5x5 Box closest to goal
Instructions
• Begin standing in front of the defender on the edge of the box closest to
goal, facing away from the goal
• Juggle the ball high in the air
• Control the ball toward either of the cones diagonally on the opposite side of
the 5x5 Yard Box
• Loop dribble around the cone you are heading toward
• Attack the defender with a 1v1 move and shoot
• Alternate going right and left each set
Coaching Points
• This drill is taking multiple elements from earlier shooting drills. You must have a
clean first touch out of the air, tight dribbling control, a good 1v1 move, and a good
finish all in one set. Being able to repeat these skills consistently every set is a very
positive sign.

Set-Up
• 3 Cones outside of the penalty box (see diagram for set up)
Instructions
• Start next to top cone
• Dribble toward the cone closest to goal
• As you get to the cone lay the ball off slightly into the space in front of you
• As you lay the ball off, take a reverse step toward the middle cone
• After your reverse step, track down the ball and shoot with your next touch across goal
• From a central position, perform the drill slightly off left and off right from the center
of the goal, as seen in the diagram
• Complete all sets on one side before moving to the other
Coaching Points
• This is a drill is a way for attacking players to work on their footwork and timing off
hitting a rolling ball first time when they have no one training with them to play them a
pass.
• In this drill you will always shoot across the to the far corner. Use your right foot on the
right side and your left foot on the left side.

Set-Up
• 3 Cones in a Triangle on top of the penalty box in a central position. The
base of the triangle closest to goal should be 5 Yards long.
Instructions
• While facing goal with the ball at your foot, start on either corner of the triangle on
the line closest to goal
• Roll a self pass to yourself in the middle area of the triangle
• Run around the back corner of the triangle and through the middle toward the ball
• Take a positive touch forward and shoot on goal
• Alternate sides each set
Coaching Points
• This simulates stepping in to receive a pass on top of the box and having a shot.
• The self pass should be moving enough where you have to shift quickly around the
back of the triangle to get up to the ball in the correct positon.

Instructions
Coaching Points
• This is similar to some of the Through on Goal drills in that you are working on finishing
first time while moving toward goal at speed. This adds in an additional technical
element with having to go through the cone line.
• If you stick to the rest times this drill can be quite demanding. Collect yourself between
each set and make sure you are focused for the next one.
