Elective 1 (Environmental

Science and Engineering)

10:15 -12:15 Monday; 4:15 – 5:45 Wednesday

Subject Facilitator/Professor
Environment
• The environment is something you are very familiar with.
• It's everything that makes up our surroundings and affects our ability to live
on the earth—the air we breathe, the water that covers most of the earth's
surface, the plants and animals around us, and much more.
Factors Affecting the Environment

• Increasing number of humans on earth (population growth)

• The rising standard of living (advances in agriculture, urbanization,
industrialization)
How human impacts into the environment?
• Extraction of resources
• Modification and manipulation of the environment
• Pollution resulting from deposition of wastes
Ecological Impact on Environment
• On the productivity of the ecosystem (green plants, atmospheric
oxygen)
• On other organism (microorganism, insects, animals)
• On climate (global warming, ozone hole, acid rain)
Top 10 Environmental Issues
Science and Engineering
• Science…improve our understanding of natural processes

• Engineering…use this understanding to develop and apply

technologies that will maintain or improve environmental quality

Environmental Science and Environmental
Engineering
• Environmental Science and Engineering - both address
environmental issues but differ in the approach to improving and
remediating the effects on the habitat.
• Environmental Scientist - takes an analytical perspective. He/she
focuses on what caused the particular condition whereas, the
• Environmental Engineer - looks at how to correct the problem
• For example, the scientist looks at the cause and results of water
contamination. The engineer takes the scientist’s information and
determines what needs to be done to remove the contaminants.
Environmental Science and Environmental
Engineering
• Environmental Science - a field of study that “provides an integrated,
quantitative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of
environmental systems.”
• Environmental Engineering - field of study that utilizes existing
principles of engineering to develop and implement solutions to
environmental issues, often as a result of a recommendation provided
by an environmental scientist.
Sustainable Development
• "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of
the present without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs."

ENGR. YVONNE LIGAYA F. MUSICO

Sustainable Development
• Sustainable development refers to a mode of human development in
which resource use aims to meet human needs while ensuring the
sustainability of natural systems and the environment, so that these
needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to
come.
