Planning a Lesson - Google Docs

The document outlines a 5E instructional model lesson plan for Year 4 students on the theme of Physical Science, specifically focusing on the refraction of light. It includes engaging activities such as watching a video, conducting investigations at various stations, group discussions, and simulations to help students understand light refraction. Assessment methods include peer reviews and self-assessments to evaluate students' scientific skills and understanding.

5E Model of Instruc on

Planning a Lesson (5E Model of Instruc on)

Year : 4

Theme : Physical Science

Learning Standard(s) : 5.3.1 State that light can be refracted, through observa on using various
media.
5.3.2 Explain through examples that light can be refracted by carrying out
ac vi es.
5.3.4 Explain the observa ons on refrac on of light through wri en or
verbal forms, sketches or ICT in a crea ve way.

Phase Ac vity Notes/Resources

1. Engage Teacher will start the lesson by sta ng what Just Add Water: The
they have learned about the light and in the Surprisingly Simple
current lesson students are going to explore Magic Trick
what else light can do. Teacher will ask
students to watch a video played by the
teacher in the classroom [Discrepant event
(video about light refrac on)]. A er the video
has been watched, the teacher will ask
ques ons about what they have watched and
why did that happen.

2. Explore Five sta ons will be set up for the students to

conduct inves ga ons. Students will be
divided into groups of four according to their
month of birth assisted and guided by the
teacher. Students are required to write down
and draw their observa ons at each sta on
they are visi ng. There will be a sheet of
paper with brief instruc ons for the
inves ga on that is going to be conducted in
each sta on.

Sta on 1: Pencil in a glass

Students will have a clear, drinking glass filled
with water and a pencil into it. Students will
be asked to look at the pencil and glass from
different angles. Observa ons will be
recorded.

Sta on 2: Magic coin

Students will have a white bowl and asked to Refrac on Of Light in
put a coin into the bowl without water in it. water - Disappearing
One student needs to be standing up looking Coin Trick -
into the bowl at the coin and starts moving Исчезающая монета
away from the bowl, keeping eyes on the coin Magic
un l it disappears; the student stops moving.
Worksheet 7b

Meanwhile the student is standing s ll,

looking into the bowl, another student in the
group is asked to slowly pour water into the
bowl un l the coin reappears in view.
Students will record their observa ons.

Sta on 3: Bending rays

Students need to draw a ver cal line using a
ruler on a piece of paper about 12 cm long. A
clear glass should be placed on top of the
line, so the line separates the bo om of the
glass in half as students look at it from the
top of the glass. By keeping the head in the
same place, students asked to pour water
into the glass and record their observa ons.

Sta on 4: Growing objects

Students will be given magnifying glasses and
asked to observe the objects placed on the
table through the magnifying glasses. The
observa on will be recorded by the students.

Sta on 5: Turning drawings and pa erns

Students will be given a few sheets of papers
having pa erns and drawings as well as a
clear, drinking glass filled with water. Students
will be directed to place a paper behind the
glass and observe how the pa erns and
drawings look through the water. Students
will be asked to explore with different
pa erns and drawings. The observa ons will
be recorded by the students.

3. Explain Students will discuss their observa ons in Refrac on of Light

groups and answer ques ons given by the
teacher. Episode Seven: What
Ques ons: is refrac on of light?
i) Do you think the pencil was actually bent? And What’s reflec on
ii) Do you think the coin moves up or starts to of light?
float in the water?
iii) Do you think the ver cal line was actually h ps://youtu.be/9wIY
bent? pD78Cy8
iv) Why do you think the objects looked
bigger when looking through magnifying
glasses?
v) Why do you think the pa erns and
drawings turned when looking through the
glass of water?
vi) What do you think caused objects to look
differently in these experiments?
Worksheet 7b

If the students are unable to understand or

recognize that light plays a role in making the
objects look different, teacher may ask
guided discussion ques ons such as: What do
you think is happening to the light when it
travels through water or magnifying glasses
before interac ng with an object?
A er the students come up with their
explana ons and ideas, a video explaining
refrac on will be shown to them to
understand the concept.

4. Elaborate Students will be given a link of a simula on of Bending Light 1.1.20

refrac on. Students are encouraged to use
the simula on to observe refrac on on
different mediums and snapshot the
simula on to support the observa ons
recorded during inves ga ons. Students will
be given me to prepare a presenta on to be
shared to the class.

5. Evaluate Peer review: Students will do peer and self

assessment and give feedback on their
explana ons.

Method of Assessment Scien fic Skills

- Peer review - Observing

- Predic ng
- Making inference
- Communica ng
- Use and handle science apparatus and
substances correctly
- Sketch specimens, apparatus and
substances correctly
