Introductory Message
Welcome to English, Grade 9!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Escalante City and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management
Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace
and time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will
also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge
and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English 9 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the
references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The English 9 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being
an active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then
perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned

II. Background Information for Learners

Giving an effective presentation means working with both the audience and the topic. Think about the
audience's point of view and what they have in common when planning a speech or any academic
presentations. Appealing to emotions is a great way to convince and inspire action in others. Effective
communication skills are a valuable life skill, which will help you in your further education and in your
future careers. The following are the benefits of effective presentations.

1. Your English-speaking skills will excel.

Presentations are a fantastic way to contribute to your English language learning
experience. They enable you to practice all language areas (such as vocabulary, phonology and
grammar) and skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening).
2. You will gain self-confidence to have your say.
Speaking in front of a class, in a language which is not your first native level, can be
difficult. However, constant practice and delivery of the target language can eventually increase
confidence level.
3. You will learn to communicate better in all areas of life.
Presentation skills are an impressive and powerful tool that will take you so much
further than just speaking in the classroom. Knowing how to make a good presentation will help
you in job interviews, to make new friends, to sell a product and make business deals
successfully. Your body language, hand gestures and eye contact will improve too. This helps
captivate your audience. Your ability to plan and prepare materials, to convince your audience of
what you have to say will surely improve.
4. You will be less stressed.
If you have effective presentation skills, this means you are good at communicating.
By speaking clearly and getting your ideas and message across to people well, there will be less
miscommunication in your life. This means less stress and happier relationships.
5. Your time management will improve.
With only a certain amount of time to give your presentation, you will learn how to
communicate your message quickly, clearly and successfully in a limited amount of time. A

good presentation is easy to understand, memorable and not so long that your audience loses
interest.

 HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PRESENTATION
1. Give the audience what they want.
Good presentation skills involve asking yourself; ‘What do my audience want to know?
What will they find interesting about my topic?’ Brainstorm ideas and write them down to
create a really interesting presentation.
2. Focus on your key message.
Keep your presentation simple by focusing on the important points you want to
communicate. Keep your message focused and stick to what you want to say. If you have
information which is not relevant to your message, do not include it!

HOW TO MAKE A PRESENTATION FANTASTIC

How can you keep your audience interested in your public speaking topics? To see how to
make an effective presentation exciting and engaging, read on for our top tips for a good presentation.
1. Start strong.
To engage the audience immediately, tell an interesting story, show an intriguing
picture or do something entertaining. By using one of these public speaking techniques, your
audience will be hooked.
2. Create variety.
One way to master effectiveness is to create variety in your presentation. It will keep
your audience interested. Use video. Use eye catching images. Involve your audience as
much as possible. Ask them questions to keep them alert. Not talking all of the time and
using different ways to communicate your idea definitely helps.
3. Speak clearly.
Good public speakers make a presentation even better by speaking clearly. You want
your audience to hear what you are saying, so make sure you speak at a good volume. If the
student at the back of the room can hear you, then your volume is great.
4. Try your best to be confident.
Even if you do not feel confident, acting confident helps.
5. Speak at a good pace.
Speaking at a pace where the audience can understand you is so important when
you deliver a presentation. Keeping an optimal pace provides time for the listeners to
understand the content, take notes, and ask questions. A good presenter should learn not to
speak too quickly, because they need to give time for the audience to understand what is being
said. At the same time, the pace should not be so slow that the presenter runs out of time to
complete the presentation and the audience becomes bored.
6. Have a plan B.
Should there be unwanted circumstances that may ruin your presentation, always have a
backup.

 5 INTERACTIVE PRESENTATIONS IDEAS AND CORRESPONDING TECHNOLOGY AIDS

1. Storytelling
The teacher does not have to be the only star. The glory of the presentation can go to all
participants who have a story to tell. The main concepts can be discussed and students should
be given time to come up with a personal example. This exercise helps students relate to the
subject matter and getting to listen to other students’ examples will drive home the concepts
further. The need for the teacher to plan extensive examples and be the only one talking
during the presentation is reduced.
Storytelling with technology: Many digital whiteboards have Cast and Throw functions that will
allow students to work on their own examples on their devices and send this to the whiteboard
when sharing. This allows students to quickly go up and share their stories without sending files
by email, wires, or USBs.
2. Non-linear Presentation
Presentations that do not follow a strict order but organically flow from topics to topic base on the
audience’s feedback is a great way to engage participants. Once prepared the presenter can
flow from one topic to the next by asking questions, polling, or receiving requests at the end of
each key point. This allows the audience to ‘build’ their own presentation on what they want to
hear not in a rigid manner as with traditional slide-based presentations.
Non-linear presentation with technology: There are non-linear presentation applications like Prezi
which helps presenters build presentations on easy to customize templates. They offer zoomable
canvas (not slides) to help people share knowledge, stories and inspire audiences to act. The
canvas shows relationships between points and offers a recommended flow but not a set path
to follow.
3. Polls, Surveys, and Quizzes
One of the most recognizable and used tools in the classroom to get a fast reaction from students
are polls, surveys and quizzes. For Polls, simple questions that have limited answers are used to
gather a consensus. This could be in the form of a raise of hands, ballots, or having students form
groups. Surveys would require printed-paper with multiple choices, scales, or short answers to
gather opinions. Quizzes are used to quickly test a student’s knowledge on what was just covered
so the class can identify weak areas and crystalize main concepts. By openly requiring students
to share their ideas on results such as a debate or open discussion would increase the
interactives of the activity. Students can also be tasked to create questions and grade their own
surveys and quizzes for an added layer of participation within the presentation.
Polls, surveys, and quizzes with technology: Many classroom management software such as
Google Classroom has built-in tools to create polls, surveys, and quizzes along with
assignments, communication, and other educational features. Once submitted the collection
and grading is instantaneous. The results can be shared easily to the student both
individually or as a group.
4. Games

Adding a small game into a presentation breaks up the normal lecture format and gets the
audience to think critically to help their team win. There are many versions and adaptions of
basic educational games. Teachers can take games such as Pictionary, Jeopardy, Casino, and
Bingo then adapt it to their needs.
Gamifying your interactive presentation: By integrating into the presentation links to
applications like ClassCraft or Kahoot a teacher can quickly launch an interactive digital
game. These applications help

 teachers tailor their own games by adding their questions, facts, and materials for individuals,
small teams or the whole class to participate.
5. Discussions and Groups Breakout Sessions
Having the class only listen to a lecture is the death of any interactive presentation. By adding
sections where students can have an open discussion or breakout sessions can help students
learn from each other, share insights, and have an opportunity to ask questions to their
peers. It is also an opportunity for the teacher to take a break from talking and help small
groups or students individually as the rest of the class converse.
Taking the discussion online for interactive presentations: Live discussion applications like
NowComment allow students to markup and discuss a text in real-time which is great for peer-
review activates and gather student input into one place quickly. Alternatively, Yo Tech is great
for teachers to create and moderate real- time chat rooms. Students can send text-like
messages, reply to other messages, and share pictures and drawings. Online chat groups are
a great way for large groups of students to collaborate and interact in one place while keeping
the noise level down in a classroom.

Hi everybody. This week, because Democrats and responsible Republicans came together, the
government was reopened, and the threat of default was removed from our economy. There’s been a lot of

discussion lately of the politics of this shutdown. But the truth is, there were no winners in this. At a time
when our economy needs more growth and more
jobs, the manufactured crises of these last few weeks actually harmed jobs and growth. And it’s

understandable that your frustration with what goes on in Washington has never been higher. The way
business is done in Washington has to change. Now that these clouds of crisis and uncertainty have
lifted, we need to focus on what the majority of Americans sent us here to do – grow the economy,
create good jobs, strengthen the middle class, lay the foundation for broad-based prosperity, and get our
fiscal house in order for the long haul. It won’t be easy. But we can make progress. Specifically, there are
three places where I believe that Democrats and Republicans can work together right away. First, we
should sit down and pursue a balanced approach to a responsible budget, one that grows our
economy faster and shrinks our long-term deficits further. There is no choice between growth and
fiscal responsibility – we need both. So we’re making a serious mistake if a budget doesn’t focus on what
you’re focused on: creating more good jobs that pay better wages. If we’re going to free up resources
for the things that help us grow – education, infrastructure, research – we should cut what we don’t
need, and close corporate tax loopholes that don’t help create jobs. This shouldn’t be as difficult as
it has been in past years. Remember, our deficits are shrinking – not growing. Second, we should finish
the job of fixing our broken immigration system. There’s already a broad coalition across America that’s
behind this effort, from business leaders to faith leaders to law enforcement. It would grow our
economy. It would secure our borders. The Senate has already passed a bill with strong bipartisan
support. Now the House should, too. The majority of Americans thinks this is the right thing to do. It can
and should get done by the end of this year. Third, we should pass a farm bill – one that America’s farmers
and ranchers can depend on, one that protects vulnerable children and adults in times of need, and one
that gives rural communities opportunities to grow and the longer-term certainty they deserve. We
won’t suddenly agree on everything now that the cloud of crisis has passed. But we shouldn’t hold back
on places where we do agree, just because we don’t think it’s good politics, or just because the
extremes in our parties don’t like compromise. I’ll look for willing partners from either party to get important
work done. There’s no good reason why we can’t govern responsibly, without lurching from
manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis. Because that isn’t governing – it’s just hurting the people
we were sent here to serve. Those of us who have the privilege to serve this country have an obligation
to do our job the best we can. We come from different parties, but we’re Americans first. And our
obligations to you must compel all of us, Democrats and Republicans, to cooperate, and compromise, and
act in the best interests of this country we love. Thanks everybody, and have a great weekend.

All plays performed on stage have playbills. The playbill contains the names of characters, the playwright,
production staff, and the synopsis. Look closely at the sample playbills of different plays provided. Through the

If you scored 15 points, it’s confirmed! The presentation is effective and you have the making of a detective. You
could be the next Nancy Drew (the girl detective in a mystery fiction series) or Tintin (the adventurer and hero of the
comic series The Adventures of Tintin). Keep predicting and develop your critical thinking skills.

MAMMA MIA (Synopsis)

The story takes place on a mythical Greek island in the present day, and centers around a young girl named Sophie who dreams of
a white wedding, with her father giving her away at the altar (I HAVE A DREAM). Problem is, she doesn't know who her dad is -
and she's getting married the next day. As the show begins, she explains to her chums that her mum, Donna, fell into the arms of
three men within a short space of time. So she's got three possible dads, and has invited them all to the wedding (HONEY,
HONEY).

Sophie's mum, a tavern hostess, used to front a rock chick band called "Donna and the Dynamos." Her former bandmates - the
tomboyish Rosie and the glamorous Tanya - show up for the wedding, and talk over how life has turned out for them (MONEY,
MONEY, MONEY). They're not the only ones who turn up though - so do the three possible dads, whom Sophie convinces not to
tell Donna that she invited them (THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC). Donna is surprised, to say the least, at the sight of the new
arrivals (MAMMA MIA).

Convinced that this new twist will ruin everything, she escapes to her room, where Rosie and Tanya do their best to cheer her up
(CHIQUITITA). They discover momentos of their old rock band days, and try to see if they've still got it (DANCING QUEEN). Sophie
is not much happier - she'd been sure she'd be able to tell at first sight which one was her father, but she has no clue. Sky (her
fiance) tries to cheer her up, while his friends try to steal him away for the traditional bachelor party, beginning with a deep-sea dive
(LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME).

At Sophie's own party, Donna, Rosie and Tanya make their triumphant return to the stage (SUPER TROUPER). The three "dad"s,
Sam, Bill and Harry, are also present, and as the only men there are subjected to the attention of the girls (GIMME! GIMME!
GIMME!). Sophie talks to each of the men, and all of them become convinced that the reason he has been invited is because he is
Sophie's father (THE NAME OF THE GAME). Sophie returns hopelessly confused, while the party carries on (VOULEZ-VOUS).

The second act begins with Sophie in bed having nightmares about her wedding, and about the events that have led up to three
men fighting to give away the bride, who isn't what she seems (UNDER ATTACK). Sam is the first to try to speak to Donna about
his suspicions, but all she can think of is the past (ONE OF US). It turns out Sam, who may have been the love of her life, left her.
They both wish they could go back to the time when they were open with one another (S.O.S.).

Meanwhile, Tanya has been fighting off advances from one of the boys that works for Donna, and finally manages to put him down
once and for all (DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW?). Sam tells Sophie something about his failed marriage, trying to ensure she
knows what she's getting into with Sky (KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU). Harry has also decided to speak to Donna, and they
begin to reminisce about the time they spent together (OUR LAST SUMMER). Sophie herself arrives and Donna helps her finish
getting ready for the wedding, hardly able to believe her little girl is getting married (SLIPPING THROUGH MY FINGERS). Sam
returns again, emboldened by his talk with Sophie, but Donna still doesn't want to have anything to do with him, and asks him to
leave (THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL).

An attraction has been growing between Rosie and Bill, who find themselves alone in the church before the wedding. She decides
to take matters into her own hands (TAKE A CHANCE ON ME). The wedding begins, with Donna giving the bride away. However,
Sophie's been doing some thinking, and puts an end to the proceedings, saying she's just not ready. But someone else is - Sam
explains his desertion of 20 years ago and asks Donna to marry him. Shocked, but happy, she agrees (I DO, I DO, I DO). Content
with having three dads rather than just one, Sophie leaves with Sky to find their future (I HAVE A DREAM).

 WICKED (Synopsis)

Good Witch Glinda of Oz country reported that the Wicked Witch Elphaba is dead. They used to be friends, and the memories of
their life story in Shiz University started.

Elphaba from the very childhood was a rogue child, being born with green skin color, as her mother had used the green elixir. She
also had a sister Nessarose in a wheelchair. When the two sisters came to Shiz, the local bosses took custody over Nessarose.
Despite the sociable character of Elphaba, the green color of her skin did not allow her to make friends. Gradually, she became
friends with her roommate, Glinda. She desperately desired to meet the Wizard of Oz, who allegedly was able to make her look like
of a usual person.

Elphaba had feelings for her classmate Fiyero, even though deep down, she knew that she would never be his chosen one. He
replied sympathetically, although he also liked Glinda. But their sympathy had no development – Elphaba was sent to the Emerald
City to meet the Wizard. Dreams of help with skin color were not justified at girl – the magician used sorcerer girl's abilities to take
credit for her miracles. Elphaba in despair stole an ancient magical book, and ran away being dubbed for that the Wicked Witch and
it was declared her hunt down. Using magical powers, the sorcerer managed to escape.

As time passed, Fiyero became a captain of the guard and announced the engagement to Glinda, which was now known as the
Good Witch. A guy named Bog was also secretly in love with Glinda, though he was loved by Nessarose, who became governor
after the death of her father. When Bog decided to confess Glinda his feelings, jealous Nessa has imposed on him inept spell,
wishing to deprive the senses to rival. Bog’s heart began to melt, and in order to save him, Elphaba turned him into the Tin
Woodman.

Elphaba reconciled with the Wizard. Fiyero felt again the old feelings to Elphaba, and both of them confessed feelings to each
other. Meanwhile, a tornado took Dorothy’s house with her dog Toto, and Elphaba sensed trouble: a house fell on her sister
Nessarose and the latter died. It turns out that this curse was designed specifically to lure the evil sorceress out and to deal with
her. Nothing was left except of mourn the dead sister and conduct Dorothy and Toto in the way to Wizard of Oz.

Guards found Elphaba, but when they tried to arrest her, Fiyero gave her a chance to escape, and he surrendered. As a result, the
guardians tied Fiyero to the pole and carried him to the field to where Elphaba was. To save her beloved, she turned him into a
scarecrow Scarecrow, who did not feel any pain.

Elphaba invented to die theatrically in the guise of the Wicked Witch. She asked her friend Glinda not to do anything to restore her
good name. Because otherwise, all the people shall be against Glinda. Friends parted forever, and Elphaba gave previously stolen
magical book back and promised never again to make good magic, as only misfortune happened to her because of it. They retired
with her beloved Fiyero and left in a secret that Elphaba has survived.

HAIRSPRAY
(synopsis)
The basis of the show is the same-titled movie Hairspray of 1988, fiercely popular motion picture. The plot unfolds in the era of the
1960s, the time of bright costumes, magnificent hairstyles and pep music. At this time from scenes and radio broadcasts, jazz and
blues went off almost entirely, losing own iconic popularity and new styles and fashion trends were
emerging.

The action takes place in Baltimore. The TV company decides to hold a prestigious dance competition among teenagers and
to choose the winners. Beautiful, fashionable, confident in themselves and their talent, they fill the studio to take part in a
severe selection. They dance together, in pairs or individually, and strict jury legibly weeds out those who seem to them not very
talented.

Young Tracy Turnblad follows the TV show with great interest, dreaming to get there one day, but there is one "but": the girl has an
excessive weight. And in general, her outward appearance gives up to the other participants from wealthy families. Even her mother
constantly repeats that she is not for such events. Anyway, Tracy decides that she should at least try. At first, they don’t even
want to let gingerbread little girl to the studio, but give her a chance to show herself. She shows so well that is passed to the
competition. And then happens what no one expected: she becomes a local star. She is recognized on the streets and asked
for autographs, handsome gays make declarations of love, and school girls madly jealous her. But when comes a time when the

1. The former president Barack Obama aims to encourage everyone to think that the government is not
their opponent. Barack Obama tried to explain and elaborate everything that people should know and
not hide something from them under his term. But still, some people don't put their trust on Barack
Obama's words. In his speech, he discussed the issue of budget, local job when it comes to their
immigration system, and passing a farm bill.

2. Yes. As the former president Barack Obama said, "Let's be clear. There are no winners here" as he
signed the stop-gap bill. Barack Obama explained fully the enumerated implementations and its
advantages and future benefits. His goal is to encourage each one not to think that the government is
their enemy. He tried not to hide everything from the people under his governance.

3. In the speech of former United States President Barack Obama, he clearly stated the point he wants
to establish when he said that “there were no winners in this government shutdown.” The thesis statement
meant that the people is the one that is in the disadvantaged position every time a government shutdown
occurs.

4. Yes, the speech was effectively made as it presented sound and logical reasoning and was very
persuasive that it called for an immediate action of people. Moreover, the effectiveness of the
presentation was made clear by the different appeals employed like the appeal to emotions, appeal to
authority, and even name-calling like Democrats and Republicans which are effective techniques in
making a propaganda.
