Design Base Shear Lecture Notes

The document outlines the procedures for calculating earthquake loads on structures, including factors such as occupancy category, seismic importance, soil profile types, and seismic zone factors. It provides examples of calculations for base shear, structure period, and lateral forces for various building scenarios. Additionally, it includes a seatwork exercise for a two-storey house to apply the simplified static force procedure.

EXAMPLE
A 5-storey special reinforced concrete moment frame hospital building in Davao
City has the following properties:

Total Weight = 8000 kN

Height of the building = 30 m

The building is at a distance 10 km from seismic source (Lacson Fault). Lacson

fault line can produce a magnitude of 6.8 earthquake.

1. What is the period of vibration of the structure?

2. Maximum base shear (kN) allowed by the code.
3. Calculate the design base shear.
VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF FORCE
EXAMPLE
A reinforced concrete moment resisting frame having different loads on each
storey is to be designed to have a base shear V = 3,000 kN.
Level Storey Height Weight
1st 3.5 m 0
2nd 5m 2,500 kN
3rd 5m 1,800 kN
4th 5m 1,500 kN
5th 5m 1,100 kN
RD 900 kN

1. Compute the structure period, T

2. Compute the lateral force (kN) acting on the roof deck
3. Compute the lateral force acting on each floor.
4. Compute the moment at the base.
EXAMPLE
The design base shear of the three-story
building is 500 kN.

a. Determine the shear force (kN) at the roof

level,
if the natural period of vibration of the building T
= 0.67s.
b. If the natural vibration of the building T=0.85s,
determine the lateral force (kN) at the roof level.
c. Find the shear force at each level.
d. Calculate the overturning moment at the
base.
SEATWORK: ½ SHEET OF PAPER
A two-storey house with roof deck is a reinforced concrete moment resisting
frame located in Baguio City which is 8 km from the nearest seismic source.

Level Storey Height Weight

1st 3m 0
2nd 3m 900 kN
Roof Deck 1800 kN
Compute the following using simplified static force procedure:
a. Compute for the value of Na
b. Compute for the value of Ca
c. Determine the design base shear acting on the base of the building
