1. Prayer

Let us all stand for an opening prayer and

ask for the guidance of our Almighty.

Can you lead the prayer, Princess?

Dear Lord, Thank you for this day, the
opportunity to learn a new lesson. We
offer you our works, joys, and studies for
today. Please help and guide us always,
Thank you, Princess. Amen.
2. Greetings
Once again, good morning class! Good morning, Ma’am
It’s nice to see you again, Ma’am

You may take your seat. Thank you, ma’am, for your kindness

How are you feeling today? We are doing great, Ma’am

Good to hear that, class.

3. Monitoring Attendance
Let me check your attendance first. Once I
call your name, respond to me with a word
that is associated with the resistor.

Okay, very good! I’m glad that you are all

present today. Since no one is absent, let's
give ourselves Mommy Dionisia a clap.

How to do the Mommy Dionisia Clap?

B. Lesson Proper
1. Review
Before we formally start our
discussion for today. Let’s have first a
recap on what was our last topic.
Anyone from the class, who can still
remember our last topic?
It is all about the classification of resistor,
Avril, what was our last topic?
ma’am

Very good! What is a resistor again,

variable resistors?

Great! John Rambo, will you state the

resistor is adjustable from 0 to its
maximum resistance.
Great! I’m glad that you enriched the
knowledge and information from our
previous topic.

Are you ready for the next lesson? Yes, ma’am

2. Motivation
I prepared a game to energize you. In
this game, you will choose a balloon
and puff it, inside that balloon, there is
a question that you need to answer,
and if you answer correctly, a
corresponding letter will be revealed
and these letters will form words.

Our activity is related to our topic for

4. Discussion
Resistor color coding is the process of
indicating the values or rating of the
resistor.

Precious, can you share with us the two

Carbon and metal film resistor, ma’am
common types of fixed resistors?

Excellent! Today we will focus on these

resistors because they both use color
code. We will interpret the colors to
determine the resistance value and the
minimum and maximum tolerance of
the resistor.
Yes, ma’am
The resistor is not new to you, right?

We have already discussed how to

identify the power rating of a resistor Yes ma’am
based on its size.

resistor again?

Very good! That is the standard

proportion of resistors. The bigger the
size, the greater the power rating in
watts.

Now, we will discuss how to interpret

the value of a resistor and determine
the minimum and maximum values.

But before that, I already introduced

you to the resistor color coding chart to
help you easily remember the color
sequencing. Black Boys Race One Young Girl But Violeta
Generally Wins Gold Silver Necklace.
What is the phrase I have given you,
class?

Very good, if you remember this phrase

you will easily know the equivalent of Black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green,
each color. blue, violet, gray, white, gold, and silver.

How about the exact order of colors?

It is very important to remember the

exact sequence of the colors so that it
will be easy to determine the number
that corresponds to the color.

Here is our resistor color coding chart:

This resistor color coding chart can be Blue, ma’am

used in both metal film resistors and
carbon resistors.

What is the body color of metal film? Beige, ma’am

Yes, very good!

Downloaded by Simply Jessie

How about the body color of the carbon
resistor?

That’s right!

There are 12 colors used to indicate the

value and tolerance of a resistor. The
ten colors which are: black, brown, red,
orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, gray,
and white are used to indicate the 1st
and 2nd digits, and the third band is the
number of zero/s added to determine
the value of a resistor while the 2
colors; gold, silver, and including no
color represents the tolerance of a
resistor. But the gold, and silver used in
the third band they are the multiplier.
Black, gold, and silver ma’am
So, what do you think are the colors
that should not be used in the 1st and Because they do not have specified value,
2nd band digits? ma’am

Why black, gold, and silver?

Amazing!

I have an actual resistor here. I’m

distributing this one and you will pass it
around and try to observe and describe They have different colors, ma’am
it. They differ in sizes, ma’am
They consist of leads on both sides ma’am.
What can you observe about the
resistor? They are composed of four different colors
printed on its body.
What else?

Another one?

Let us have an example of how to

interpret the resistance value of a
carbon resistor and compute the
tolerance value.

The resistor colors are brown, green,

red, and gold. 1, ma’am!

5, ma’am!

Based on the chart, what is the

equivalent of 1st band which is brown?
2, ma’am
Very good, our second band is green.
What is the equivalent of green?

Excellent! The 3rd band represents the

number of zeroes added. In this case, it
is red. So, how many zeros do we add?

The 4th band is gold, which represents a

tolerance of ± 5%.

So, how do we get the resistance value?

Simply combine the 1st and 2nd digits.
Our first digit is 1 and the second digit is
5. When we combine them, it becomes
15. Then, the third band represents the 1500Ω or 1.5kΩ± 5%.
number of zeros added to the first and
second digits. In this case, we have 2,
meaning you add 2 zeros. So, our
resistance value is 1,500, and we simply
copy the tolerance as ± 5%.

What is the answer?

Very good! The resistance value is

1.5kΩ with a tolerance of ± 5%. The
negative and positive 5% tolerance
means that the value can be more or
less by 5%.

To calculate the minimum and

maximum tolerance of 1.5kΩ, you
multiply the nominal value by the
tolerance percentage and then subtract
and add the result from the nominal
value.
Yes, ma’am
In this case, our nominal value is 1.5kΩ.
Let's calculate the 5% of 1.5kΩ.

Downloaded by Simply Jessie

1.5kΩ x 0.05 (5%) = .075kΩ
Once we computed the 5% of 1.5kΩ, we
subtract it from the nominal value. So,
1.5kΩ - .075 = 1.425k. This is the
minimum tolerance value.

Can you follow, the class?

For the maximum tolerance, we use the

same procedure but we use addition.
Again, the 5% of 1.5kΩ is .075kΩ.

Next, we add it to the nominal value.

So, 1.5kΩ+ .075Ω = 1.575kΩ. This is the Yes ma’am.
maximum tolerance value.

To summarize, in calculating the

minimum and maximum tolerance we
have to compute first the percentage of
the nominal value then we use
subtraction for the minimum and
addition for the maximum.

Did I make it clear, class?

Very good! Another example. 1st band – 2
2nd band – 2
3rd band – 1
4th band -
Kindly try this in your notebook. ±5%
The resistor colors are red, red, brown, 220Ω±5%.
and gold.

Who wants to try on the board?

What is the value of the first band, 2nd

band, 3rd band, and 4th band?

What is the resistance value? 220 Ω x 0.05 (5%) = 11 Ω.

Now, let's calculate the minimum and 220 Ω - 11 Ω = 209 Ω. This is the minimum
maximum tolerance of 220 Ω. tolerance, ma’am

Who will try? 220 Ω + 11 Ω = 231 Ω. This is the maximum

The first thing you do is calculate the tolerance, ma’am

5% of 220 Ω.

Now that you have the 5% of 220 Ω,

you can calculate the minimum and
maximum tolerance.

Next, how about the maximum

tolerance?

resistor and compute the minimum and
maximum tolerance value.
Combine the 1st and 2nd digits, it becomes
68. Since the 3rd band is 4, just add 4 zeros.
So the answer is 680k Ω.
Who can decode the resistor?
Volunteers?

Okay, what is the resistance value?

How did you get the 680k?

Excellent! The answer is 680kΩ± 5%.

Who got the same answer?

Good job! Compute the 5% of 680kΩ ma’am

demonstrate how to calculate the
