2. What are the evidences that supports the continental
drift theory?
3. Why was Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory
Rejected?

EVIDENCES OF PLATE TECTONIC THEORY

e. Abstraction
Discussion Theory of Continental Drift
Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental drift.
 Continental drift was Wegener’s theory that all
continents had once been joined together in a single
landmass and have drifted apart since.
 Wegener named this supercontinent Pangaea.
 Wegener’s theory was rejected by scientists because
he could not explain what force pushes or pulls
continents.

EVIDENCES OF PLATE TECTONICS

 Geologic Evidence
 Fossil Records
 Geologic Formations
 Seafloor Spreading

1. GEOLOGIC EVIDENCE
Continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.

2. FOSSIL RECORDS
The discovery of a fresh water reptile called
Mesosaurus, which live to during the Permian period in
Africa and South America, led many to believe that
Africa and South America were joined around 280
million years ago.
3. GEOLOGIC FORMATION
Aside from geologic evidence and fossils, geologic
formation also supports the theory of continental drift.
EVIDENCE OF GLACIERS

Glacial striations were

found in the equatorial South American Continent
and to the continent of Central Africa which is
unlikely to have icy landmass because they are located
at the equatorial part of the earth where they get too
much sunlight.

BITUMINOUS COAL
Bituminous coal is formed from compacted
tropical plant remains.
But observe how bituminous coal were distributed all
around the world.

They don’t fall on a hot-humid areas but rather they

fall on frigid areas like Northern Asia and Antarctica.
Because of this discovery of Wegener, he concluded
that these continents containing bituminous coal were
once a single landmass that were located closer to the
equator.

MOUNTAIN RANGES
Mountain belts on Europe Asia were also found to line
up perfectly with mountains in North America.
Wegener observed that the rocks in both mountains
were the same type and age. This leads him to
conclude that continents of Europe and North America
were once connected to each other.

Why
was

Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory Rejected?

Wegener could not find the force that was causing the
continents to drift. Because of this, he could not convince
anyone that continents could move. He died in Greenland on
an expedition. At the time of his death, no one believed his
hypothesis.

The Discovery of Seafloor Spreading

HARRY HAMMOND HESS
Hess was a geologist and Navy
submarine commander during
World War II. Part of his mission
had been to study the deepest
parts of the ocean floor.
His discovery of the Great
Global Rift in the 1950s
inspired him to look back at his
data from years before. After
much thought, he proposed in
1960 that the movement of the
continents was a result of sea-
floor spreading.

He discovered that molten magma from beneath the

earth's crust could ooze up between the plates in the Great
Global Rift. As this hot magma cooled in the ocean water, it
would expand and push the plates on either side of it -- North
and South America to the west and Eurasia and Africa to the
east. This way, the Atlantic Ocean would get wider but the
coastlines of the landmasses would not change dramatically.

What causes sea floor spreading?

Convection current causes the movement of materials
in the Earth’s interior. This is the driving force that moves
the tectonic plates.
The heat from the earth’s core is absorbed by the
materials in the mantle; thus, these materials expand,
resulting in lowering their density and becomes lighter.
Lighter materials rise leaving spaces for heavier materials to
sink, and the process continuously repeat.
Generalization

To summarize the topic, the teacher will ask the following

questions:
1. Who proposed the Continental Drift Theory?
2. What are the evidences that supports the continental
drift theory?
3. Why was Alfred Wegener's Continental Drift Theory
Rejected?
4. Who was able to discover the force that drives the
movement of tectonic plates?
5. What causes seafloor spreading?

IV. EVALUATION

V. ASSIGNMENT Student’s answer “Enrichment” on page 278 of their modular

textbook.
Questions:
1. How shapes of the present-day continents support the
continental drift theory?
2. Why is it important to provide evidences when we
hypothesize something?
