Objectives of the course
To introduce students with the importance of planning, design
and management of irrigation, by following the basic ideas-
 when to apply (timing),
 how much to apply (amount), and
 how to apply (method).

Relevancy
Agricultural sector uses ~70% of available fresh water with quite
low irrigation efficiency. By designing an efficient irrigation
method and plan, even saving of a little percent of water will
make huge availability of fresh water to other sectors- leading to
water sustainability.

© At the completion of the course the students should be able to

understand the necessity of planning an irrigation system to
provide water at the right time and right place.
Evaluation System
Mid-Sem. Exam/Test : 21-25 Feb. 2022 30%

End-Sem. Exam/Test : 07-13 Apr. 2022 50%

Teacher’s Assessment : 20%

Quiz/Viva : 10 marks
Assignments : 5 marks
Attendance : 5 marks
Irrigation and Drainage Engineering
 What is Irrigation?
 Artificial application of water to soil for the purpose of crop
production.
 To supplement the water available from rainfall and soil
moisture (GW).
 What is Drainage?
 Removal and disposal of excess water from agricultural land.
 Excess water- detrimental to crop production- restricts soil
aeration, affects soil temperature and hinders with tillage
operations.

Why Water Resources Assessment?
 Basic source of water is precipitation.

Irrigated Agriculture in the World

 Irrigation is practiced on more than

277 million ha (ICID Survey, 2005).

 The top ten countries irrigate 67.3% of

the world’s total. Four countries -
India, China, USA and Pakistan – have
the largest irrigated areas.
