Studio Project Plan: "Green Spaces in Lusaka: The Future of a Walk-

Through Park Along the Ring Road"

Project Title:

Green Spaces in Lusaka: The Future of a Walk-Through Park Along the Ring Road

Project Location:

Lusaka, Ring Road

Project Duration:

10 Weeks (January 27, 2025 – April 6, 2025)

Objective:

The objective of this project is to design a modern, sustainable, and multifunctional

walk-through park along the Ring Road in Lusaka. This park will provide green spaces
for recreation, relaxation, and community engagement while incorporating key facilities,
including a bus station, café, and outdoor public amenities to meet the social and
functional needs of Lusaka's urban residents. The project emphasizes sustainable
design principles, accessibility, and cultural relevance.

Project Requirements:

1. Site Analysis

• Physical Context: Assess the site's topography, vegetation, soil quality, and
climate conditions to inform design decisions.
• Social Context: Understand the needs of commuters, park users, and
surrounding communities, identifying opportunities for community engagement
and public use.
• Access Points: Analyze pedestrian and vehicular access along the Ring Road,
focusing on integrating a seamless connection to the bus station and public
spaces.
• Constraints and Opportunities: Highlight challenges such as traffic, noise, and
safety while identifying opportunities for green corridors, public amenities, and
visual aesthetics.

2. Program Development

Develop a comprehensive program that addresses the multifunctional needs of the

park, bus station, and café. Key spaces and elements include:

1. Park Features:
o Pedestrian Walkways: Wide, shaded pathways for walking and jogging,
with benches along the way.
o Cycling Tracks: Dedicated lanes for cyclists to promote sustainable
transport.
o Green Areas: Lawns and landscaped zones for relaxation, picnics, and
outdoor events.
o Playgrounds: Secure areas for children with play equipment and soft
flooring.
o Cultural Spaces: Zones for showcasing Zambian art, sculptures, and
cultural exhibits.
o Water Features: Fountains or small ponds to enhance aesthetics and
create a calming environment.
o Lighting: Solar-powered lighting for safety and nighttime use.
2. Bus Station:
o Shelters: Covered waiting areas with seating to protect commuters from
sun and rain.
o Drop-off and Pickup Zones: Designated lanes for buses, minibusses,
and ride-sharing vehicles.
o Information Booths: Digital displays for bus schedules and routes.
o Amenities: Restrooms, drinking fountains, and charging stations for
electronic devices.
o Parking: Secure spaces for bicycles, motorcycles, and vehicles.
o Safety Measures: Clearly marked pedestrian crossings and barriers to
manage vehicular flow.
3. Café and Informal Seating Areas:
o Indoor Café: A small café serving snacks, beverages, and light meals,
with seating for 20-30 people.
o Outdoor Seating: Shaded patio areas to complement the park
experience.
o Green Roof: Incorporate a green roof for thermal insulation and
aesthetics.
o Kitchen and Storage: Back-of-house spaces for café operations.
4. Community Event Spaces:
o Outdoor Amphitheater: A small, open-air venue for performances,
markets, and gatherings.
o Exhibition Spaces: Modular areas for pop-up events, educational
workshops, and art displays.
5. Administrative and Support Areas:
o Park Management Office: A small office to manage park operations and
maintenance.
o Storage Facilities: Secure areas for tools and equipment.
o Security Office: Space for security personnel to ensure the safety of
users.
6. Sustainable Design Features:
o Renewable Energy: Solar panels for powering park lighting and café
utilities.
o Rainwater Harvesting: Systems to collect and store water for irrigation
and cleaning.
o Native Vegetation: Planting drought-resistant, indigenous species to
conserve water and support biodiversity.
Design Concept:

The design will center around creating an urban oasis that blends natural beauty,
functionality, and cultural expression. The bus station and café will act as key nodes,
seamlessly integrated into the park’s pathways and green spaces. The layout will
prioritize accessibility, visibility, and connections to the surrounding community while
promoting pedestrian-first planning.

Sustainable Design Integration:

• Energy Efficiency: Solar-powered lighting and efficient mechanical systems in

the café and bus station.
• Passive Design Strategies: Natural ventilation, shading devices, and daylight
optimization.
• Eco-Friendly Materials: Use of locally sourced materials for pathways, seating,
and structures.
• Waste Management: Recycling bins strategically placed throughout the park.

Architectural Drawings:

Produce detailed drawings to communicate the design:

• Site plan showing zoning and key features.

• Floor plans for the café and bus station.
• Elevations and sections highlighting spatial relationships.
• Detailed technical drawings for sustainable systems and amenities.

Evaluation Criteria:

• Creativity and clarity of the park design.

• Integration of the bus station, café, and green spaces.
• Inclusion of sustainable design strategies.
• Quality and completeness of drawings, models, and presentation.
Timeline:

• Week 1: Site analysis and program development.

• Week 2 : Concept development and initial sketches.
• Week 3-4 (Feb 24_FIRST (1ST) CRIT): Drafting architectural drawings.
• Week 5-6: 3D visualization and model-making.
• Week 7 (Mar 17_SECOND (2ND) CRIT): Finalizing technical drawings and
integration of features.
• Week 8 : Refinement of designs and report preparation.
• Week 9 : Assembling final presentation materials.
• Week 10 : Final presentation and feedback session.

Submission Details:

• Submission Deadline: April 7, 2025 (Both Full-time and Distance students)

• Submission Format: One PDF file, emailed ([email protected]) and
uploaded to AIMS.
• Late Penalty: Automatic failure for missed or late submissions.
