I. Objectives
III. Procedures
A. Review
Directions: Read the following sentences. Choose the correct verb to be use in each
sentence.
B. Motivation
Directions: Analyze the following pictures. Then answer the questions that the
teacher is going to ask.
Today, we are going to learn to use compound sentence to show what happen
to the specific event and why does it happen. But before that let’s have a mind
challenger.
C. Presentation
Examine the following pictures on the succeeding slides and answer the
questions that follow.
ENDANGERED SPECIES
(Cross-Curricular Focus: Life Science)
Today, some types of animals are an endangered species. This means there are very few animals of that
kind left on Earth. The animals could face extinction. Extinction is when all the animals of that kind die. When a
type of animal is extinct, it is gone forever.
One problem for animals is that their habitat is sometimes destroyed by humans. As human
population increases, more and more space is needed for people. Building areas for people to live on pushed
animals out of their natural homes. Forest and swamp habitats are the most threatened.
Trees are cut down to make room for homes and businesses. Swamps are filled in so that neighborhoods
can expand. The habitat is destroyed. The animals have nowhere else to go. Without a habitat, the number of
animals begins to go down.
Another major cause of endangerment of animals is overhunting by humans. The practice of shooting
animals as a sport can quickly bring the animals to extinction. This is a worldwide problem. The governments of
countries around the world must unite to agree on laws regarding animals. Some animals may have large enough
populations so hunting will not endanger them. Others must be protected.
There is still hope for animals that are already on the endangered species list. Some organizations
are working hard to recreate habitats for them. Breeding programs are helping animal populations increase.
We all have to be aware and think before we act. The things we do can affect more than just ourselves.
COMPREHENSION CHECK
D. Discussion
Cause and effect is one way to explain things that happen around us.
them to
happen.
E. Activity
Let us try to construct compound sentences out of the following pairs of sentences on the
succeeding slides.
F. Application
Group Activity
In this activity, the class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be
given a task which they need to accomplish within 15 minutes. After the time allotted
for them to finish the task, group presenters are asked to report/ present their output
in front of the class.
Each group will be given different pictures and then you are going to
construct one compound sentence to show cause and effect relationship.
IV. Assessment
Directions: Identify if the underlined part of each of the following
compound sentences is a CAUSE or an EFFECT.
Effect 1. Tom and Matt are good friends because they have many common hobbies.
Effect 3. Tim forgot his English book inside the classroom so he was unable to
complete his homework.
Effect 4. Kelly studied her lessons last night and she got a perfect score on
their summative test.
V. Assignment
Combine each of the following pairs of sentences using an appropriate
conjunction to form a compound sentence that expresses cause and effect
relationship.
