Assignment 02 Due: Jan 29th, by 12 noon

1. Solve using Cramer’s Rule:

𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 7𝑧 = 13
𝑥 +𝑦 +𝑧 =1
𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 4

2. Consider the following system.

2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 𝑎
3𝑥 + 𝑦 − 5𝑧 = 𝑏
−5𝑥 − 5𝑦 + 21𝑧 = 𝑐
Show that the system is consistent if 𝑐 = 2𝑎 − 3𝑏

3. Let A be a square matrix of order n and I be the identity matrix of the same order .
Suppose 𝐴2025 = 0. Show that 𝐴 + 𝐼 is an invertible matrix.
(Hint : 1 + 𝑥 2025 = (1 + 𝑥)(1 − 𝑥 + 𝑥 2 − ⋯ − 𝑥 2023 + 𝑥 2024))

3 2 1
4. Let 𝐴 = (0 2 2)
0 0 −1

i. (a) Use row operations to calculate 𝐴−1 .

𝑥
(b) Hence find the unique solution of the system 𝐴𝑥 = 𝑏 where 𝑥 = (𝑦) and 𝑏 =
𝑧

ii. Use (i) (a) to write 𝐴−1 as a product of elementary matrices.

Hence, write 𝐴 as a product of elementary matrices.
5. Using the determinant and the adjoint, calculate the inverse of

0 0 2 0
𝐴 = (1 0 0 1)
0 −1 3 0
2 1 5 −3
