CARROM – PE NOTES

1. Introduction to Carrom
Carrom is a popular tabletop game that originated in India and is widely played across South
Asia and other parts of the world. It is similar to billiards but played on a square wooden
board with four corner pockets. Players use a striker to hit smaller discs called carrom men
to score points by pocketing them.

2. Equipment and Labelled Diagram

Standard Equipment Used in Carrom

1. Carrom Board – A square wooden board with a smooth playing surface and four
corner pockets.
2. Striker – A larger disc used to hit the carrom men.
3. Carrom Men – 19 small discs:
o 9 White pieces
o 9 Black pieces
o 1 Red piece (Queen)
4. Powder – Applied on the board to reduce friction and ensure smooth movement.

3. Rules of Carrom
Basic Rules

 Carrom can be played by two players (singles) or four players (doubles).

 Each player takes turns to strike using the striker to pocket their designated carrom
men (either White or Black).
 A valid shot must be made from within the baseline without crossing the diagonal
lines.
 If a player fails to pocket a carrom man, the turn passes to the opponent.

Order of Pocketing Carrom Men

1. Players must pocket their assigned carrom men (black or white) first.
2. The Queen (Red) can be pocketed at any time, but it must be covered by pocketing
another piece (black or white) immediately after.
3. The Queen cannot be the last piece pocketed—at least one black or white piece
must remain before attempting the Queen.

Queen and Covering Rule

 If a player pockets the Queen, they must cover it by pocketing another carrom man
in the same turn.
 If they fail to cover the Queen, it is returned to the center of the board.
 If a player pockets the Queen as their last piece, it does not count, and they must
attempt it earlier in the game.

Fouls and Penalties

A foul results in a penalty, and the player must return a previously pocketed carrom man to
the center. Common fouls include:

 Pocketing the striker (scratch).

 Pocketing an opponent’s piece unintentionally.
 Failing to cover the Queen after pocketing it.
 Playing out of turn.

4. Scoring and Winning the Game

 Each carrom man pocketed = 1 point.
 Queen = 3 points (only if covered).
 The first player to reach 25 or 29 points or win the most rounds in 8 boards is
declared the winner.

5. Skills & Techniques

 Finger Positioning – Proper use of fingers to aim and strike effectively.
 Striking Techniques –
o Straight Shot – Directly hitting a piece.
o Cut Shot – Hitting at an angle.
o Bank Shot – Bouncing off the board edges.
 Defensive & Offensive Strategies – Blocking an opponent’s shots, controlling
rebounds, and pocketing the Queen first.

6. In carrom, you must strike from the baseline (the two parallel lines at your side of the
board). Here are the key rules on where and how to shoot:
1. Striker Positioning

 The striker must be placed within the baseline, touching both side lines (the two
arrows on your side).
 It cannot be placed on the red circle (center circle) or outside the baseline.

2. Direction of the Shot

 You can only strike forward (towards the opposite side of the board).
 No backward shots (hitting behind your baseline) are allowed.

3. Targeting Coins

 Aim for your own color coins (black or white, depending on your turn).
 If you're pocketing the Queen, you must cover it with your own coin in the next turn.

4. Trick Shots (Allowed in Casual Play)

 Cut shot – Hitting the coin at an angle to deflect it into a pocket.

 Rebound shot – Bouncing the striker off the board edges to hit a coin.
 Double shot – Hitting a coin in a way that it deflects off another coin into a pocket.

Correct Striker Placement:

✅ Place the striker within the baseline, touching both side lines (arrows).
✅ You can strike forward towards the opposite side.

Illegal Striker Placement (Foul):

❌ Placing the striker on the small center circle (red circle) is not allowed.
❌ Striking from outside the baseline is also a foul.
