The Most Awesome Word List You Have Ever Seen: Italian
Thanks for purchasing! These are word lists that are laid out in an order that should be
significantly easier to memorize than the standard sorts of word lists you find in textbooks. You’ll
find an article in the beginning of the lists explaining how and why they work. Use them to make
your first set of Picture Word flashcards, described in detail in the Second Gallery of the Fluent
Forever book (p.200) and on the website.
The words in these lists are laid out in 89 little illustrated groups: “light – blue – shirt – police –
gun – to shoot – murder,” “June – warm – beach – sand – island – heaven,” etc. Some of my
original Kickstarter backers pointed out that in the Southern Hemisphere, you’d go to a warm
beach in December, not June. So I rearranged some of the stories to make sense for folks living
in the Southern Hemisphere. Use whichever version makes sense for you.
We do not offer Anki decks for the 625 Word List at our Fluent Forever website. I talk about this
in depth on p.44 of Fluent Forever, and I’ll excerpt the first part of that here:
The card construction process is one of the most fun and satisfying ways to learn a language.
Content in the knowledge that every detail will become a permanent memory, you become the
architect of your own mind. What breed of dog will you think about when you wish to remember
the word "dog"? Which examples will you choose to form your verb conjugations? What
vocabulary is most useful for your own life?
Making these decisions forms an exciting part of the learning process, and, ultimately, takes
very little time. After getting used to your SRS, you can add new cards in a matter of seconds.
For most nouns, you can simply type the word once, search for a picture on Google Images and
copy (or draw) it into your SRS. This can take less than 15 seconds. Imagery for more
complicated ideas will, of course, take more time to identify: a process which, itself, gives you
the connections you need to make a word your own.
So we suggest that you create your own cards with Anki using the words in the Word List. If
you’re still having problems making flashcards on your own, then consider using the help of a
tutor from iTalki.com along with the tips from this article: Hacking Fluent Forever. There are also
other websites that have pre-made flashcards of Italian words which could save you a lot of time
and effort, but you should try making your own flashcards first. If you have questions and want
answers to making Anki flashcards efficiently, we highly recommend checking out the free Anki
Language Learning Reddit forum. You can also get tips and resources at the Anki Language
Learning website. While Anki is great as a free option, it may be too complicated or annoying for
you, so you might want to try out our Fluent Forever App, which is a paid service but could be
more convenient for you.
These lists work because it’s easier to memorize words when you learn them in the context of
other, related words. You can memorize a word like “apple” faster when you learn it at the same
time as you learn “pie” “dessert” and “delicious,” because those words all associate with each
other. If you run into difficulties remembering “apple” next week, you may find that you can
remember it by thinking about “pie” or “dessert.”
The illustrations are here for the sole purpose of strengthening the associations between the
words in each group. You’ll still be learning each word individually, looking online for images,
and playing Spot-the-Differences to figure out what makes each new word different from your
expectations. But while you’re searching for these images and making your flashcards, the
illustrations in this list will naturally help associate the word you’re learning with the words you
learned previously and the words you’re about to learn. This will make all of your vocabulary
easier to memorize.
If you encounter problems with Anki or this deck, then post it on the forum at Anki Language
Learning Reddit. You can ask for help and get answers and tips from the Reddit community.
The reason we suggest this is because as of September 12th 2019, we no longer provide
official support for our Anki based pronunciation trainers and word lists. Therefore, the support
we are able to offer for these products is limited, and you are better off getting direct support
from the Anki Language Learning Reddit community or other Anki-focused resource websites.
If you’ve completed reading over the Word List, then it’s time to add new cards into Anki using
the words in the Word List. If you’re still having problems with remembering the vocabulary or
creating the flashcards, then you can ask for help at Reddit’s Anki Language Learning
community, or you could check out this blog post about Hacking Fluent Forever. You can hire a
tutor from iTalki.com to help you create your vocabulary cards. There are also other websites
that have ready-made decks of Italian vocabulary which could save you a lot of time and effort.
Once you have completed the Base vocab word list, you can then consider checking out a
Italian frequency dictionary.
If your pronunciation is a problem, then make sure to buy the Pronunciation Trainer at the shop.
Another great resource for pronunciation is Rhinospike.com. There are also other websites that
have Italian flashcard deck resources which are highly recommended, such as the Italian
alphabet, Italian IPA and other useful goodies. There’s also blogs about language learning tips
with Anki in general which could help you.
For more info about the Fluent Forever method, you can purchase the Fluent Forever book. You
can grab the physical copy online or purchase the audiobook version at our shop.
