RULES FOR EVENTS

5.1. LIGHT VOCAL SOLO – INDIAN (MALE/FEMALE/TRANSGENDER)

1. Competitions are held separately for men, women, and transgender participants.

2. The maximum permitted time for the song is five (5) minutes.

3. Only Non-film Folk songs/Geet/Ghazal/Bhajan, Snabed, and Abhangas can be presented.

4. Judging will be based on qualities such as Swara, Tal, Composition, General impression, etc.

5.2. CLASSICAL VOCAL SOLO (MALE/FEMALE/TRANSGENDER)

1. Items can be presented in either Hindustani or Karnatik style.

2. The maximum permitted time for the item is ten (10) minutes.

3. Cinema songs are not allowed under this category.

4. Sufficient thought and care must be exercised in the choice of raga and composition.

5. Judging will be based on qualities such as Swara, Tal, selection of Raga, composition, and

general impression.

6. Competitions are held separately for men, women, and transgender participants.

5.3. STRINGED INSTRUMENT (EASTERN/WESTERN)

1. Instruments of Western origin adapted to the Indian raga system are allowed for the

Eastern category.

2. For the Eastern category, items can be presented in either Hindustani or Karnatic style.

3. The maximum permitted time is ten (10) minutes.

4. Judging will be based on qualities like Tal, Composition, Nadam, Rhythm, Sruthi, and

General impression, among others.


5.4. WIND INSTRUMENT SOLO (WESTERN/EASTERN)

1. The maximum permitted time for the item is ten (10) minutes.

2. a) For Western: Wind instruments of Western origin like Harmonium, Accordion, Clarinet,

Saxophone, Organ, etc., are to be used. (Clarification: Electronically operated Keyboards are

not considered wind instruments).

b) For Eastern: Wind instruments of Indian origin or instruments of Western origin adapted

to the Indian Raga System are allowed (e.g., Harmonium, Pullankuzhal, Banzoori,

Nadhaswaram, etc.).

3. Wind instruments (Eastern) can be presented in either Hindustani/Karnatic Style, while Wind

instruments (Western) should be presented in any of the Western Styles.

4. Judging criteria will likely include qualities such as Swara, Tal, Composition, Selection of

Raga (Indian), Rhythm, emotion, originality, and general impression.

5.5. PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT (EASTERN/WESTERN)

1. Items can be presented either in Karnatic or Hindustani style for Indian instruments and in

any of the Western styles for Western instruments.

2. The maximum permitted time for the item is ten (10) minutes.

3. Judging will likely be based on qualities like Tal, Composition, Nadam, Kalapramanam,

Manodharma, General impression, etc.

4. Eastern Instruments: Indian Chenda, Tabala, Pakhawaj, Mridangam, Ghatam, Thavil,

Edekka, Maddalam, Ganjira, etc.

5. Western: Triple Drum, Jazz, etc. (Clarification: Instruments like electronically operated

Rhythm Pads are not included in this category).

5.6. WESTERN VOCAL SOLO

1. The competition is open to both male and female participants

2. Only one accompanist is allowed.


3. The time allotted for the item is a maximum of 5 minutes.

4. The language of the song shall be only English.

5. Judgment will be based on qualities like composition, rhythm, coordination, and general

impression, among others.

5.7. FOLK DANCE (INDIVIDUAL)

1. The permissible number of Accompanists is four (4), and only a CD/USB is allowed at the

Zonal level.

2. The dance can be primitive or folk but not classical.

3. Duration of the dance should not exceed 10 minutes.

4. Judgment will be based on Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make-up, Sets, and

overall effect.

5.8. MARGAMKALI, THIRUVATHIRAKALI, OPPANA

1. The maximum number of participants allowed is ten (10).

2. Maximum 10 dancers & accompanists, including singers, are allowed, totaling 4.

3. The team may consist of all boys, all girls, or a mixture of both.

4. Duration of the dance should not exceed 10 minutes.

5. Judgment will be based on Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make-up, Sets, and

overall effect.

5.9. DUFFMUTTU

1. The maximum number of participants allowed is ten (10).

2. Duration of the event should not exceed 10 minutes.

3. The songs used for Duffmuttu should be 'Arabi Baith.'

4. Judgment will be based on Baith, Rhythm, percussion, and overall effect.


5.10. KOLKALI

1. The maximum number of participants allowed is twelve (12).

2. Duration of the event should not exceed 10 minutes.

3. The songs used for Kolkali should be melodious and traditional 'Mappilappattu.'

4. Judgment will be based on the originality of the song, rhythm, movements (Maithayam),

formation, footwork, and overall effect.

5.11. FOLK DANCE (GROUP)

1. The maximum number of participants allowed is ten.

2. The team may consist of all boys, all girls, or a mixture of both.

3. The permissible number of accompanists is five (5).

4. Duration of the dance should not exceed 10 minutes.

5. Judgment will be based on Rhythm, Formation, Expression, Costumes, Make-up, Sets, and

overall effect.

5.12. OTTANTHULLAL

1. Maximum of three accompanists are allowed.

2. Maximum time allowed is ten minutes.

3. Judgment will be based on qualities like musical quality, Bhavabhinayam, Tal, Costume,

Abhinaya, etc.

5.13. KERALANATANAM

1. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes, including preparation time and exit.

2. Maximum of four accompanists are permissible.

3. Judgment will be based on qualities like Tal, Technique, Rhythm, Abhinaya or expression,
costume, footwork, general impression, etc.

5.14. ELOCUTION (MALAYALAM/ENGLISH)

1. The language of the competition shall strictly adhere.

2. Reading the speech is not permitted, but participants may refer to written points.

3. Judgment will be based on qualities like language correctness, expression clarity, theme

development, and other rhetorical qualities.

5.15. ELOCUTION (HINDI/TAMIL)

1. The maximum allotted time for the item is 5 minutes.

2. The topic will be given 10 minutes before the start of the competition.

3. The language of the competition must strictly be Hindi.

4. Reading the speech is not permitted; however, participants may refer to written points.

5. Judging will likely be based on qualities like language correctness, expression clarity, theme

development, and other rhetorical qualities.

5.16. ESSAY WRITING (ENGLISH/MALAYALAM/HINDI/TAMIL/ARABIC)

1. The language used in the competition must strictly adhere to the chosen language.

2. No reference material is permitted during the competition.

3. Judgment will likely be based on qualities like theme development, composition, tone, style

appropriateness, language correctness, originality, and general impression.

4. Maximum time allowed for writing the essay is one hour.

5.17. GROUP SONG (INDIAN)

1. The team will present two group songs, one of which must be a Folk Song.

2. A maximum of six singers is allowed in a group. Additionally, a maximum of three


participants can play instruments (non-singers), and singers are also allowed to play

instruments.

3. Only students are allowed as participants (singers/non-singers playing instruments).

4. The Group song should be taken from Indian songs in any regional language, excluding film

songs.

5. Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes, excluding setting time.

6. The setting time for a group song shall not exceed 5 minutes.

7. Judging will focus on the quality of singing only, considering Sruthi, Tal, Rhythm, Harmony,

etc., and not on the team's makeup, costumes, or actions.

5.18. GROUP SONG (WESTERN)

1. The maximum number of singers in a group can be six, and a maximum of three

participants playing instruments (non-singers) are allowed. Singers are also allowed to play

instruments.

2. Only students are allowed as participants (singers/non-singers playing instruments).

3. The group song should be in English.

4. Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes, excluding setting time.

5. The setting time for a group shall not exceed 5 minutes.

6. Judging will focus on the quality of singing only and not on makeup, costumes, or actions of

the team.

5.19. KATHAKALI

1. Each participant will have a maximum of 15 minutes, including time for preparation and exit.

2. A maximum of five (5) accompanists are permissible.

3. Judgment will primarily focus on qualities such as Bhavabhinayam (emotional expression),

Tal (rhythm), Mudra (hand gestures), Kalasam (artistic elements), body movements,

originality, costume, technicality, Abhinaya of expression, and overall general impression..

5.20. BHARATHANATYAM, MOHINIYATTAM

1. Each participant will be allotted a maximum of 15 minutes, including time for preparation

and exit.
2. Judgment will primarily focus on qualities such as Tal (rhythm), Technique, Rhythm,

Abhinaya (expression), costume, footwork, and overall general impression..

5.21. OTHER FORMS OF CLASSICAL DANCES

1. Classical dances can belong to any of the approved schools such as Kathak, Manipuri, and

Odissi.

2. Competitions for Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kathakali are held separately.

3. Each participant will be allowed up to 15 minutes, including preparation and exit time.

4. Judgment will primarily focus on qualities like Tal, Technique, Rhythm, Abhinaya or

expression, costume, footwork, and general impression.

5.22. SHORT STORY WRITING

(ENGLISH/MALAYALAM/HINDI/TAMIL/ARABIC)

1. The maximum time allowed for writing the short story is one hour.

2. The topic will be given on the spot.

3. The language used in the competition must strictly adhere to the chosen language.

4. No reference material is permitted during the competition.

5. Judgment will be based on qualities like character delineation, plot construction, theme,

diction, language correctness, style, and general impression.

6. The story must be original and not copied or condensed from other writings.

5.23. POETRY WRITING (ENGLISH/MALAYALAM/HINDI/TAMIL)

1. The maximum time allowed for writing poetry is one hour.

2. The topic will be given on the spot.

3. The language used in the competition must strictly adhere to the chosen language.

4. No reference material is allowed in the competition hall.

5. Judgment will be based on qualities like theme development, diction, imagery, emotion,

appropriate language use, and general impression.

6. The poem must be original and not borrowed or copied from others.

5.24. QUIZ
1. The finals will include audio-visual and oral rounds.

2. Specific rules regarding evaluation procedure, response time, and the types of rounds will

be provided by the Quiz Master before the start of the competition.

3, The medium used will be English.

5.25. KAVITHAPARAYANAM (MALAYALAM), POETRY RECITATION

(ENGLISH/HINDI/TAMIL/ARABIC)

1. Maximum time allowed is 10 minutes.

2. Judgment will be based on clarity of speech, expression of emotion and ideas, Rhythm,

Tone, and general impression.

5.26. AKSHARASLOKAM / KAVIAKELI

1. Time is fixed by the Judges.

2. Judgment will be based on qualities like clarity of language, expression of ideas, theme,

rhythm, tone, and sensitivity for quick response.

5.27. KATHAPRASANGAM

1. The Medium is Malayalam.

2. There shall be 1 participant and a maximum of 3 accompanists.

3. Judgment will be based on qualities like clarity of language, theme, expression of emotions,

harmony of literature, singing qualities, etc.

4. Maximum time allotted for the item is 20 minutes.

5.28. PHOTOGRAPHY

1. Item will be conducted on the spot.

2. Time will be fixed by the Judges.

3. Participants can use either DIGITAL or FILM ROLL Camera. Mobile Phone Cameras will not

be allowed.

4. Each participant should submit three photographs based on the theme/topic.

5. Photographs will be judged on content, composition, sensitivity, creativity, and style.

6. Both Colour and/or Black & White photographs can be submitted for valuation.
7. Entries should be original and must not be modified/edited.

8. The Camera along with Memory Card/Film Roll should be submitted to the Stage Manager

for verification before the competition.

9. Digital cameras up to 12 Megapixels can be used.(In case of cameras with higher

Megapixels, the entries must be within the 12 Megapixel size.)

10.Format of digital entries should be transferable to a computer without compatibility

problems.

11.Further instructions will be announced during the competition.

5.29. FILM REVIEW

1. The review is to be written on a film screened before the competitors.

2. Time allowed for review writing is One hour.

3. The review can be written in English or Malayalam.

5.30. MONO ACT

1. Time allowed is 5 minutes.

2. Judgment will be based on acting ability, clarity of language, literary expression, originality,

humor, and general impression.

5.31. MIMICRY

1. Time allowed is 5 minutes.

2. Judgment will be based on voice command, imitative ability, originality, humor, and general

impression.

5.32. PAINTING

1. Item will be conducted on the spot.

2. Duration will not exceed 2 hours 30 minutes.

3. Painting size will be half imperial size drawing paper (22 inches X 15 inches).

4. Painting can be done in oil, water, poster, or pastel colors.

5. Participants should mention their medium (oil, water, poster, or pastel) in the entry form.
5.33. COLLAGE

1. The event will be conducted on the spot.

2. Duration will not exceed 2 hours 30 minutes.

3. Participants should bring their own scissors and materials.

5.34. POSTER DESIGNING, CLAY MODELLING

1. The event will be conducted on the spot based on the given subject/idea.

2. Duration will not exceed 2 hours 30 minutes.

5.35. CARTOONING

1. The event will be conducted on the spot based on the given subject/idea.

2. Duration will not exceed 2 hours.

5.36.ONE ACT PLAY

1. Only one entry per college is permitted.

2. The number of participants is limited to 9, with 3 accompanists.

3. A Synopsis (4 copies) of the play should be submitted during registration.

4. Duration of the play will be 30 minutes, with 10 minutes allocated for stage arrangements.

5. Presentation medium can be Malayalam/English.

6. Judges' decision shall be final.

5.37. SKIT

1. Skit are short plays, satirical or humorous in nature.

2. A maximum of 6 participants are allowed, with 3 accompanists.

3. Time allotted is 10 minutes.

4. Personal remarks, aspersions, or character assassination are not allowed.

5. Use of make-up, drapery, and background music is permitted.

6. Judging will focus on qualities like Theme, acting, stagecraft, overall design, and general

impression.

7. Presentation medium shall be English/Malayalam..


5.38. MIME

1. Mime or Mookabhinayam is the expression through gestures, postures, and facial

expressions without words.

2. Maximum of 6 participants are allowed, with 2 accompanists.

3. Maximum time allotted is five (5) minutes.

4. Judgment will be based on qualities like idea, presentation creativity, use of make-up,

costume, music, and general impression.

5.39. VANCHIPATTU

1. Two Traditions:

a) Kuttanadu tradition

b) Aranmula tradition

5.40. KUCHIPUDI

1. Performance Elements:

Movement, rhythm, acting, body language (flexibility), costume, steps (movements),

techniques

5.41. MAPPILAPPATTU

1. Aspects Considered:

Literature, cultural identification, rhythm, orchestration (harmonious music).

5.42. NADANPPATTU

1. Criteria and Limitations:

a. State the tradition of the song while performing on stage

b. Perform only songs in oral tradition

c. No background singers allowed

d. No CD or karaoke support permitted

e. Costume setup won’t affect grading

2. Additional Details:

Literature, musical notes, clarity, uniformity of the chorus, instruments.

5.43. PARICHAMUTTU

1. Costume and Performance Elements:

Appropriateness of the costume, devotional tone, rhythm, and orchestration.

5.44. INSTALLATION

1. Participant Responsibilities:

Participants must bring the materials required for the event.

5,45 DEBATE ENGLIGH

(1) Each Institute will be represented by the two debaters; one will speak FOR, while another will speak
AGAINST the motion. (2) Medium of expression will be English. (3) Topic of debate will be announced 10
minutes before the start of the competition. (4) Each debater has to speak minimum 4 minutes and
maximum 5 minutes. (5) Reading from paper/any other source is strictly not permissible. (6) The
competitor from each Institute will speak FOR and AGAINST the motion.

5.46. MALAYALAM DEBATE

(1) Each Institute will be represented by the two debaters; one will speak FOR, while another will speak
AGAINST the motion. (2) Medium of expression will be Malayalam. (3) Topic of debate will be announced
10 minutes before the start of the competition. (4) Each debater has to speak minimum 4 minutes and
maximum 5 minutes. (5) Reading from paper/any other source is strictly not permissible. (6) The
competitor from each Institute will speak FOR and AGAINST the motion

. 5.47. RANGOLI

(1) Each institute can send one participant. (2) Duration: Maximum of 2 hours 30 minutes. (3) Participants
must bring their own materials. Various regional styles like Mandna. Alpana, Kolam, etc., are allowed. (4)
Only one medium is allowed (e.g.. poster colors, flower petals. sawdust, pulses, or rice). Pasting is not
permitted. (5) Participants must create their Rangoli within the space provided by the organizers.

5.48. MEHNDI

(1) Credit is given for originality, creativity, and aesthetic sense. (2) Hand prints, molds, and decorative
materials are not allowed. (3) Participants must bring their own materials. (4) Duration: Maximum of 2
hours 30 minutes. (5) The design must extend to a minimum of six inches on the forearm. Mehndi must be
applied to both hands of a model, who must be a student from the same college. (6) Each institute can
send one participant.
5.49. STAND-UP COMEDY

(1) Only one participant per team. (2) Performance duration: 4-5 minutes. (3) Performances can include
humorous and satirical elements. (4) Judging criteria: a) Comic timing. b) Originality and naturality. c)
Overall presentation. (5) Medium: Malayalam. (6) Performances must maintain cultural and artistic
decency. Vulgarity or offensive content is prohibited. (7) The judges' decision will be final.

5.50. FOLK ORCHESTRA

(1) Each college can send one team of up to 12 participants. (2) Performance duration: 8-10 minutes
(excluding a 5minute setup time). (3) Teams can comprise male, female, or mixed participants. (4) Only live
accompaniment is allowed; recordings are prohibited. (4) Folk tunes recognized in the university's state are
preferred. (5) Singing is not permitted. (6) Judging is based on musical quality. Visual elements like set
design will not influence the score. (7) Dancing during performances is discouraged.

5.51. CHAKYARKOOTHU

(1) Maximum duration: 20 minutes. (2) Singing time: 5 minutes. (3) Songs must be in Sanskrit. (4)
Emphasis should be on light music. (5) One person may accompany on Mizhavu (not necessarily a
student).

(6) Judging criteria:.

a) Costume : 20 marks. b) Satire: 20 marks. c) Intonation: 20 marks. d) Literary Flare ): 20 marks. e)


Presentation : 20 marks.

5.52. NANGHYARKOOTHU

(1) Maximum duration: 20 minutes.

(2) Accompaniment:a) Mizhavu: 2 persons. b) Idakka: 1 person. c) Thalam: 1 person. (3) Accompanists
need not be students. (4) Judging criteria: a) Costume : 20 marks. b) Body discipline 20 marks. c) Hand
gestures : 20 marks. d) Expression : 20 marks. e) Stage presentation : 10 marks. f) Rhythm
(താളേബാധം): 10 marks.
