Outcome Based Education (Obe)

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) model is being adopted at a fast pace at Engineering

colleges in India at the moment. It is considered as a giant leap forward to improve
technical education in India and help Indian Engineers compete with their global
counterparts. Outcome Based Education (OBE) is an important demonstration Tool for
student-centered instruction that focuses on measuring student performance through
outcomes

Quality assurance and improvement process is about determining whether the set
educational objectives meet a general standard of quality. Emphasis of outcome-based
education (OBE) system is on quantifying what the students are capable of doing and
learning outcomes of the students is one of the key components. Course Outcomes are the
statements indicating knowledge and skills the student is expected to acquire at the end of
a course. Program outcomes represent the knowledge, skills and attitudes the students
should have at the end of program. Program outcomes can be directly measured through
course outcomes. The outcome-based education model is based on defining various
parameters called as Graduates Attributes (POs).

OBE enhances the traditional methods and focuses on what the Institute provides to
students. It shows the success by making or demonstrating outcomes using statements
“able to do" in favor of students. OBE provides clear standards for observable and
measurable outcomes.

What Are Outcomes?

 An outcome of an education is what the student should be able to do at the end of
a program/ course/ instructional unit.

 Outcome-based education is an approach to education in which decisions about

the curriculum are driven by the exit learning outcomes that the students should
display at the end of the program/ course.

 Outcomes are the abilities the students acquire at the end of the program

 In outcome-based education, “product defines process”.

 It is the results-oriented thinking and is the opposite of input-based education

where the emphasis is on the educational process and where we are happy to
accept whatever is the result

 Outcome-based education is not simply producing outcomes for an existing

curriculum.
Four Principles In Obe

The most widely used one is the four principles suggested by Dr. William
Spady in the year 1994.

• CLARITY OF FOCUS - Clarity of focus, meaning that all activities (teaching, assessment, etc)
are geared towards what we want students to demonstrate;

• DESIGNING DOWN - Design down, meaning designing the curriculum from the point at which
you want students to end up

• HIGH EXPECTATIONS - Establish high, challenging performance standards

• EXPANDED OPPORTUNITES - All students can be successful. Its only that they may require
different instructional strategies . Additional learning opportunities in order to do so.

The Essentials of OBE

• In OBE, what matters ultimately is not what is taught, but what is learned;

• Teachers must set appropriate course intended learning outcomes, instead of teaching objectives;

• Constructive alignment: What we teach, how we teach and how we assess ought to be aligned with
the intended learning outcomes, such that they are fully consistent with each other;

• The quality of teaching is to be judged by the quality of learning that takes place;

• All OBE approaches take a criterion-based view of assessment and focus on what students can do
with knowledge after a period of learning.

Levels of Outcomes
 Program Educational Objectives:
 Program Specific Outcomes
 Program Outcomes
 Course Outcomes:
Program Outcomes (Pos):
Program outcomes are statements that describe what students are expected to know and
be able to do upon graduating from the program. These relate to the skills, knowledge,
analytical ability, attitude, and behaviour that students acquire through the program at the
end of 4 years. The POs essentially indicate what the students can do from the knowledge
acquired by them during the program. As such, POs define the professional profile of an
engineering graduate. NBA has defined the following 12 POs for an engineering graduate
and are applicable to all engineering programs:

1.Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering

fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering
problems.

2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex
engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of
mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

3.Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems

and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with
appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and
environmental considerations.

4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and

research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data,
and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.

5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and
modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex
engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.

6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to
assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities
relevant to the professional engineering practice.

7.Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering

solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and
need for sustainable development.

8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities
and norms of the engineering practice.
9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or
leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.

10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with

the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend
and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and
give and receive clear instructions.

11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the
engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member
and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to
engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological
change.

Program Specific Outcomes (Psos):

Program Specific Outcomes are statements that describe what the graduates of a
specific engineering program should be able to do. PSOs characterize the specificity of
the core courses of a program. The POs are important as a guideline when developing or
revising the course outcomes. PSOs are defined based on the Centre of Excellence of the
Department. Generally, 2 to 4 Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs) that the graduates of
the program will attain should be defined for each department.

Course Outcomes (COs):

Course Outcome (CO) is a detailed description of what a student must be able to
do at the end of a course. COs are the statements of Knowledge/ Skills/ Attitude that
students are expected to know, understand and perform, as a result of learning
experiences. Course Outcome remains the base of the hierarchy of outcomes and is the
tools that can be used to measure student performance in each course. The course
outcomes need to be concise descriptions of what learning is expected to take place by
course completion. It should be narrower and measurable statements. Well-written COs
facilitate the faculty in measuring the achievement of the CO at the end of the semester. It
also helps the faculty in designing suitable delivery and assessment methods to achieve
the designed COs.

Mapping Factor (Correlation Level)

It indicates to what extent a certain component (either assessment method to CO or CO to
PO or PO to PEO & PSO

 3-indicates Substantial (high) mapping (high contribution towards attainment)

 2-indicates Moderate (medium) mapping (medium contribution towards attainment)

 1-indicates Slight (low) mapping (some contribution towards attainment)

Levels of attainment
Here 3 levels of attainment are taken as

1-Low; 2-medium; 3- High

The 3 levels of attainment are defined for Continuous Internal Evaluation(CIE) as

 Attainment 3 : 70% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks allocated to CO

 Attainment 2 : 60% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks allocated to CO
 Attainment 1 : 50% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks allocated to CO
The 3 levels of attainment are defined for Semester End Examination (SEE) as

 Attainment 3 : 80% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks allocated to CO

 Attainment 2 : 70% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks allocated to CO
 Attainment 1 : 60% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks allocated to CO
Attainment of COs

 Attainment of COs can be measured directly and indirectly

 Direct attainment of COs can be determined from the performances of students in all the
relevant assessment instruments.

 Indirect attainment of COs can be determined from the course exit survey.

 The exit survey form involves receiving feedback from students on all the POs.

Direct CO attainment

 Direct attainment of COs is determined from the performances of students in

Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) and Semester End Examination (SEE).

 The proportional weightages of CIE: SEE will be as per the academic regulations in
force.

 Direct attainment of a specific COs is determined from the performances of students to

all the assessment items related to that particular CO.
Direct CO attainment from SEE

 Semester End Examination (SEE) is conducted and evaluated by the University for Tier
2 institutes.

 Thus, the departments in Tier 2 institutes get only total marks scored in SEE and not
question-wise marks!

 As a consequence, departments in Tier 2 institutes have no means of computing the

direct attainment of individual COs from SEE. The only possible solution, though not
satisfactory, is to treat the average marks in SEE as the common attainment of all COs.

Direct CO attainment from CIE

 Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) is conducted and evaluated by the Department

itself. Thus, institution have access to question-wise marks in all assessment instruments
in CIE.

 Since all COs are assigned equal weightage in the Semester End Examination, to
maintain uniformity, the COs are assigned equally in the CIE also.

CO attainment Computation for Theory Subjects:
For every subject 5 Course Outcomes (CO) are defined and mapped to Program
Outcomes (PO) on a scale of 0 to 3. Highest correlation is 3.

Marks scored by the students , scaled to a maximum of 100, in the CAT1, CAT2, Model
and Semester End Examinations are entered for all students and all subjects.

The CO attainment for CAT1, CAT2, Model and Semester End Exams are then computed
for the particular course / subject.

The 3 levels of attainment are defined as

 Attainment 3 : 70% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks

 Attainment 2 : 60% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks

 Attainment 1 : 50% Students scoring >= 50% of maximum marks

 Attainment 0 : Less than 50% Students scoring >=50% of max marks

The CAT1 marks contribute to CO1 and CO2 equally. The CAT2 marks contribute to
CO3 and CO4 equally. The Model exam marks contribute to all COs equally. For
computing the CO attainment for the subject, the calculation is done based on the
weightage as given below. CAT1 contributes to CO1 and CO2. CAT2 contributes to CO3
and CO4. Model exam contributes to CO1, CO2, CO3, CO4 and CO5. Semester End
Exam also contributes to CO1, CO2, CO3, CO4 and CO5.

Record the percentage of students achieving a set percentage of max marks allotted to an
individual CO in a given IAT. CO attainment is calculated for all COs based on internal
test and University Examinations using the below formula. CO attainment level for a
particular course is then calculated.

Program outcomes attained is calculated through the attainment of COs. For a given
course, all COs are mapped to certain PO. The overall CO attainment value computed and
the CO-PO mapping are used to compute the attainment of POs.

Indirect attainment is determined from student exit surveys. A questionnaire was designed
for this purpose and the average response of the outgoing students for each PO is
computed.

Final PO attainment for a particular batch = 0.8 * Direct Attainment + 0.2 * Indirect
attainment
