This research proposal investigates the relationship between family income, student engagement, and academic interest among students at Bool National High School for the academic year 2024-2025. The study employs a descriptive correlational design with 264 respondents, revealing that higher family income levels correlate with increased student engagement and academic interest. The findings suggest that enhancing student engagement, particularly for those from lower-income families, is essential for fostering a supportive learning environment.

National High School, Bool East, Biliran, Philippines. February 2025. “FAMILY
INCOME AND STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT TOWARDS THEIR ACADEMIC
INTEREST” A Master’s Thesis.

Adviser: JOHN RANDEL L. EMBOLTORIO

This study aims to assess family income, students’ engagement, and their

influence on the academic interest of students at Bool National High School

during the academic year 2024-2025. A descriptive correlational research design

was employed, involving 264 students randomly taken as a respondents. The

family income variable was evaluated using a family income level questionnaire

adapted from Doe, U. (2016). Students’ engagement was measured through a

Item Distribution Across Factors (IDAF) questionnaire from MD Dixon (2015),

while students’ academic interest was assessed using Students interest

questionnaire (SIQ) questionnaire from Schiefele, U. Pearson Product Moment of

Correlation was utilized to determine the relationships among family income,

students’ engagement, and academic interest. The findings indicated a

significant correlation between family income and students’ engagement,

suggesting that higher family income levels promote increased participation in

academic activities. Additionally, students’ engagement positively influenced their

academic interest, highlighting the importance of active involvement in fostering

enthusiasm for learning. The interplay between family income and academic

interest was also significant, revealing that financial support enables students to

explore personal interests, enhancing their overall academic pursuits. The study

x
concludes that both family income and student engagement are critical factors

influencing academic interest. It is recommended that interventions be developed

to enhance student engagement, particularly for those from lower-income

families, to foster a more supportive learning environment. Schools should

consider implementing programs that promote active participation in academic

activities, along with parental involvement initiatives, to help bridge the gap in

academic interest among students of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.

Keywords: Family income, students’ engagement, students’ academic interest.
