AFFECTING THE REST).

REMEMBER
• IF YOUR SELECTION ISN’T QUITE CENTERED
AROUND YOUR ELEMENT, MOVE THE
SELECTION BORDER BY CLICKING AND
DRAGGING INSIDE THE BORDER.

• IF YOU WANT TO CREATE A PERFECT


SQUARE OR CIRCLE, HOLD DOWN THE
SHIFT KEY AFTER YOU BEGIN DRAGGING
YOUR MOUSE. WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR
DESIRED SELECTION, RELEASE THE MOUSE
BUTTON FIRST AND THEN RELEASE THE SHIFT
KEY.
QUICKLY REMOVE A SELECTION
• WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH A SELECTION AND NO LONGER NEED
IT, YOU CAN DESELECT IT BY GOING UP TO THE SELECT MENU AT
THE TOP OF THE SCREEN AND CHOOSING DESELECT.

• YOU CAN USE THE KEYBOARD SHORTCUT CTRL+D (WIN) /


COMMAND+D (MAC). OR, FOR AN EVEN FASTER WAY TO
DESELECT A RECTANGULAR OR SQUARE SELECTION, SIMPLY CLICK
ANYWHERE INSIDE THE DOCUMENT WINDOW WHILE YOU STILL
HAVE THE RECTANGULAR MARQUEE TOOL ACTIVE.

• BY DEFAULT, THE ELLIPTICAL MARQUEE
TOOL IS HIDING BEHIND THE
RECTANGULAR MARQUEE TOOL IN THE
TOOLS PANEL. TO ACCESS IT, SIMPLY
CLICK ON THE RECTANGULAR
MARQUEE TOOL, THEN HOLD YOUR
MOUSE BUTTON DOWN FOR A SECOND
OR TWO UNTIL A FLY-OUT MENU
APPEARS SHOWING YOU THE OTHER
TOOLS THAT ARE NESTED BEHIND IT.
CLICK ON THE ELLIPTICAL MARQUEE
TOOL IN THE FLY-OUT MENU TO SELECT
IT.

RATIO OF WIDTH TO HEIGHT IN A SELECTION. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU
ENTER 2 FOR WIDTH AND 1 FOR HEIGHT, YOU ALWAYS GET A
MARQUEE SELECTION THAT’S TWICE AS WIDE AS IT IS HIGH, NO
MATTER WHAT THE SIZE.
• FIXED SIZE: THIS SETTING LETS YOU SPECIFY VALUES FOR THE WIDTH
AND HEIGHT. THIS OPTION COMES IN HANDY WHEN YOU NEED TO
MAKE MULTIPLE SELECTIONS THAT MUST BE THE SAME EXACT SIZE, SUCH
AS IN A SCHOOL YEARBOOK. NOTE THAT THE MARQUEE IS
IMMEDIATELY DRAWN WHEN YOU CLICK YOUR CANVAS. THE CLICK
POINT IS THE TOP-LEFT CORNER OF THE MARQUEE
WIDTH AND HEIGHT
• WHEN YOU SELECT FIXED ASPECT RATIO

PREVIEW YOUR SELECTION WITH YOUR EDGES HIDDEN
AND A SEMI-OPAQUE LAYER OF COLOR (THAT SHOWS
ONSCREEN ONLY) IN YOUR UNSELECTED AREA.
DOUBLE-CLICK THE ICON TO CHANGE THE COLOR AND
OPACITY OF THE OVERLAY. PRESS F TO CYCLE BETWEEN
STANDARD AND OVERLAY VIEWS. PRESS X TO HIDE

REFINE EDGE OPTIONS
• ZOOM TOOL: ENABLES YOU TO ZOOM INTO
YOUR IMAGE TO SEE THE EFFECTS OF YOUR
SETTINGS.
• HAND TOOL: LETS YOU PAN AROUND YOUR
DOCUMENT WINDOW TO SEE THE EFFECTS OF
YOUR SETTINGS ON VARIOUS PORTIONS OF
YOUR IMAGE.
FREEFORM SELECTING WITH THE
LASSO TOOLS
• TO BEGIN SELECTION, GRAB THE LASSO TOOL FROM THE TOOLS
PANEL.
• POSITION THE CURSOR ANYWHERE ALONG THE EDGE OF THE
ELEMENT YOU WANT TO SELECT.
• HOLD DOWN THE MOUSE BUTTON AND TRACE AROUND THE
ELEMENT, TRYING TO INCLUDE ONLY WHAT YOU WANT TO SELECT.
• CONTINUE TRACING UNTIL YOU RETURN TO YOUR STARTING
POINT; RELEASE THE MOUSE BUTTON.
REMEMBER
• TO INSPECT THE SELECTION OUTLINE FOR ANY
PROBLEM AREAS, IT USUALLY HELPS TO BE
ZOOMED IN ON THE IMAGE. TO ZOOM IN,
PRESS AND HOLD CTRL+SPACEBAR (WIN) /
COMMAND+SPACEBAR (MAC) TO
TEMPORARILY SWITCH TO PHOTOSHOP'S ZOOM
TOOL, THEN CLICK INSIDE THE DOCUMENT
WINDOW ONCE OR TWICE TO ZOOM IN (TO

• LASSO TOOL SELECTED, THEN TO ADD TO A SELECTION, HOLD
DOWN YOUR SHIFT KEY. YOU'LL SEE A SMALL PLUS SIGN (+)
APPEAR IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT OF THE CURSOR ICON, LETTING
YOU KNOW THAT YOU'RE NOW IN ADD TO SELECTION MODE.
WITH THE SHIFT KEYA HELD DOWN, CLICK SOMEWHERE INSIDE
OF THE EXISTING SELECTION, THEN DRAG OUTSIDE OF IT AND
