Review of the literature-Purpose and Resources

Review of the literature:

A literature review is a compilation, classification, and evaluation of what other researchers have
written on a particular topic. A literature review normally forms part of a research thesis but it
can also stand alone as a self-contained review of writings on a subject.
Your literature review gives your readers an understanding of the evolution of scholarly research
on your topic. In your literature review you will: survey the scholarly landscape. provide a
synthesis of the issues, trends, and concepts.

Review of the literature - Purpose:

The purpose of a literature review is to gain an understanding of the existing research and
debates relevant to a particular topic or area of study, and to present that knowledge in the form
of a written report. Conducting a literature review helps you build your knowledge in your field.
The purpose of a literature review is to:
1. Identify inconsistencies: gaps in research, conflicts in previous studies, open questions
left from other research.
2. Identify the need for additional research.
3. Identify the relationship of works in context of its contribution to the topic and to other
works.
Review of the literature - Resources:
This includes peer-reviewed articles, books, dissertations and conference papers. When
reviewing the literature, be sure to include major works as well as studies that respond to major
works. You will want to focus on primary sources, though secondary sources can be valuable as
well.
It includes in-depth essays exploring major topics, including the novel, plays, poetry, and global
Victorian studies, as well as succinct articles on themes such as cosmopolitanism, journalism,
race, sexuality, and reading.

Conducting the Literature Search: Using database and Internet, Internet Search Tools and
Quality of Internet Resource
Conducting the Literature Search:
Literature search is a systematic and well-organised search from the already published data to
identify a breadth of good quality references on a specific topic.
Components:
1. Literature search—finding materials relevant to the subject being explored.
2. Data evaluation—determining which literature makes a significant contribution to the
understanding of the topic.
3. Analysis and interpretation—discussing the findings and conclusions of pertinent
literature.
Conducting the Literature Search: Using database and Internet
Literature search is a comprehensive exploration of published literature with the purpose of
finding scholarly articles on a specific topic. Managing and organizing selected scholarly works
can also be useful.
Literature search provides not only an opportunity to learn more about a given topic but provides
insight on how the topic was studied by previous analysts.

A database is a searchable collection of information. A research database is where you find

journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. Each database contains thousands of articles
published in many different journals, allowing you find relevant articles faster than you would by
searching individual journals.
Literature search database is a set of databases that index many different academic journals with
different disciplines and other types of literature such as books and conference papers. Scopus
and Web of Science are good databases to start with for any research topic and literature review.

The Internet is used to support instruction and research needs in addition to extensive
communication using e-mail and access to databases and other sources of information
E-learning, e-lectures, e-campus, e-research, blended learning, e-science and e-studies are some
of the emerging terminologies. Use of the internet has consequences on academia including
changing the learning environment by allowing students to broaden their academic experience,
access to important information, and communicate with others within the academic community.

Conducting the Literature Search: Internet Search Tools

Search techniques are the methods you use to search catalogs, article databases, and web search
engines to find information. Search allows you to search content created by tools within a site. It
achieves this by creating an index of all content that other tools make available to the search tool.
This index is updated automatically, so as content is added to the site, it will be indexed.
A search engine is a software program that helps people find the information they are looking for
online using keywords or phrases. Search engines are able to return results quickly—even with
millions of websites online—by scanning the Internet continuously and indexing every page they
find.
Internet Search Tools:

● Bing - General web search engine from Microsoft.

● DuckDuckGo- A general search engine with a focus on user privacy.
● Google - The predominant search engine.
● Google Scholar.
● TinEye.
● Wolfram|Alpha.
● Yahoo!
● Yippy.
Conducting the Literature Search: Quality of Internet Resource
The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the interlinked
hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail,
telephony, and file sharing.

As you examine each source, it is important to evaluate each source to determine the quality of
the information provided within it. Common evaluation criteria include:
1. purpose and intended audience,
2. authority and credibility,
3. accuracy and reliability,
4. currency and timeliness, and
5. objectivity or bias.
