Active and Passive Voice


QUIZ# 2
Active voice is different from passive voice. Active voice describes the action performed by the
subject. When using passive voice, an action is being done to the subject in the sentence.
Examples: 4 Steps in Converting Active to Passive Voice

Active Voice: The men pushed the cart. 1. Identify the subject, verb and object
Subj. verb Obj. 2. SWAP the subject and the object

Passive Voice: The cart was pushed by the men. 3. ADD appropriate linking verb before the
MVand change the main verb to past participle
Subj. LV MV(V3) Prep. Obj. (V3)

4. ADD preposition by before the object

Identify if the sentence is in active or passive voice, then rewrite each sentence if it is active
make it passive. If it is passive make it active voice vice versa.
1. Ms. Sullivan teaches us grammar.
2. The teacher praised him.
3. The firemen took the injured to the
hospital.
4. An earthquake destroyed the town.
5. The boy’s work pleased the teacher.
6. The fire damaged the building.
7. Italian pizza is eaten by many people.
