Name: ___________________________________

QUESTION 1

1.1 The diagram below shows the apparatus used to demonstrate the process of breathing
in humans.
.

1.1.1 What does structures A to D represent in the human body?

A __________________________ B __________________________

C __________________________ D __________________________ (4)

1.1.2 Name and describe the mechanism of breathing as it would take place in the human
body if structure D is moved upwards.

QUESTION 3
Teboho, a grade 11 learner, performed an investigation to measure the amount of air that
enters and leaves the lungs during breathing. He used a spirometer in the investigation. A
spirometer is an instrument that measures the volume of air that moves into and out of the
lungs.

His friend, Peter, was part of the investigation.

Teboho measured the volume of Peter’s breaths for 60 seconds while standing still.

He then also measured the volume of Peter’s breaths after running up a flight of stairs for 60
seconds.

The graph below illustrates his findings.

3.1 How much air was taken into Peter’s lungs in one breath during deep breathing?

3.2 How many breaths did Peter take in the first 60 seconds? __________________ (2)

3.3 Provide a possible explanation for the change in the pattern of the graph
between 65 seconds and 95 seconds.

3.4 State the dependent variable for this investigation.

After an hour Teboho continued with the investigation under the following conditions:

- Peter had to lay down.

- He was given air with different concentrations of carbon dioxide to breathe in while
the oxygen concentration remained the same.
- He measured the number of Peter’s breaths per minute.
- He measured the volume of air that Peter breathed in per minute.

highest?

3.6 Describe how the increase in carbon dioxide concentration breathed in,
affected the total volume of air breathed in per minute.

3.7 Explain why the volume of air breathed in per minute, increased from 11,9
litres to 18,5 litres, while the number of breaths remained the same at 15 per
minute?
