5 : Running – Long Distance Events LONG DISTANCE EVENTS LONG DISTANCE EVENTS
1. 3,000 meter run or 3 kilometer run (3k),

• It is approximately seven and
a half laps (rounds) around a standard track oval. It begins with a curved starting line but is run without lanes. • The 3000 marks the start of the long distance events. 1. 3,000 meter run (3k)
• starting line (the curve is greater
on the smaller indoor track) but don’t run in lanes, so the start is mainly a competition to gain a runner’s favoured position on the track. • Endurance is paramount at this distance, and above, with top speeds reserved for the final lap. 2. 3,000 meter steeplechase
• It is a race, usually of 3,000 meter over two
kinds of obstacles, hurdles and water jumps. • There shall be 28 hurdle jumps and 7 water jumps included in the 3000m event. 3. 5,000 meter run (5k run)
• Approximately twelve and a half laps
(rounds) in a standard track oval. • It also begins with a curved starting line but is run without lanes. • Competitors start on a curved line and can immediately run anywhere on the track, leading to a large initial pack typically stretching three four lanes wide, depending on how many runners are racing. 4. 10,000 meter run (10k run)
• The 10,000m run / 10k run is a
common long-distance track running event. • The event is part of the athletics program at the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships, and is common at championship level events. • The race consists of 25 laps / rounds around an Olympic-sized track. 4. 10,000 meter run (10k run)
• It is less commonly held at track
and field meetings, due to its duration. • The 10,000-metre track race is usually distinguished from its road running counterpart, the 10k run, by its reference to the distance in meters rather than kilometers. 5. 20,000m run / 21k run (half marathon) • The 20,000m run (approximately 12.43 mi or 65,617 ft) is a rarely contested long distance running event in track and field competitions • most world records in the event have been set during half marathon and one-hour race, as a half marathon is roughly 21,000 meters. 6. 42,200m run / 42.2k 7. (Full marathon)
• 42,200m run / 42.2k (Full
marathon) is usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. • The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory.
