Output Devices

Definition:
Output devices are hardware components that allow a computer to communicate information
to the user. These devices take processed data from the computer and present it in a form that
humans can understand, such as visual, audio, or printed output.

Types of Output Devices

1. Monitor (Visual Output)

Function: Displays visual information, such as text, images, and videos, on a screen.
Types of Monitors:
 CRT (Cathode Ray Tube): Older, bulky monitors; used in early computers.
 LCD (Liquid Crystal Display): Slim, energy efficient; common in laptops and
desktops.
 LED (Light Emitting Diode): Advanced version of LCD with better color and energy
efficiency.
 OLED (Organic LED): Thinner, flexible screens with higher contrast.
 Example Use: Viewing websites, watching videos, and creating presentations.

2. Printer (Printed Output)

Function: Produces a hard copy (physical output) of digital data, such as documents and
images.
Types of Printers:
 Inkjet Printer: Uses ink cartridges; good for highquality photos and text.
 Laser Printer: Uses toner powder and a laser to produce fast, highquality prints; ideal
for office environments.
 Dot Matrix Printer: Uses ink ribbon and pins; typically for basic, lowquality prints;
still used in some industries for multipart forms.
 Example Use: Printing school assignments, photos, or office documents.

3. Speaker (Audio Output)

Function: Converts digital audio signals into sound waves, allowing users to hear music,
audio notifications, and other sounds.
Types of Speakers:
 External Speakers: Plugged into the computer; provide higherquality sound.
 Internal Speakers: Built into laptops or monitors; generally have lower sound quality.
 Headphones/Earphones: Provide personal audio output.
 Example Use: Listening to music, watching movies, participating in online classes or
video calls.

4. Projector (Visual Output)

Function: Projects the computer screen onto a larger surface, like a wall or screen, for a
bigger audience.
Types of Projectors:
 LCD Projector: Uses liquid crystal display technology to project images; good color
accuracy.
 DLP Projector: Uses Digital Light Processing technology for smoother images;
popular in cinemas.
 Example Use: Presentations in classrooms, movie screenings, and conferences.

5. Plotter (Printed Output)

Function: An advanced printer used for printing largescale images, technical drawings,
maps, and architectural blueprints.
Types of Plotters:
 Drum Plotter: Moves the paper back and forth while pens draw the image.
 Flatbed Plotter: The paper remains stationary while pens move across the surface.
 Example Use: Engineering designs, architectural blueprints, and large posters.

6. Headphones (Audio Output)

Function: Allows users to listen to audio privately without disturbing others.
Types of Headphones:
 Wired Headphones: Connect to the computer via a cable; reliable audio quality.
 Wireless Headphones: Connect via Bluetooth or wireless adapter; convenient and
portable.
 Example Use: Listening to music, taking online classes, watching videos privately.

Summary Table of Common Output Devices

Output Type of Output Primary Function

Device
Monitor Visual Displays text, images, and videos
Printer Printed Produces hard copies of documents and images
Speaker Audio Outputs sound and music
Projector Visual Projects images/videos onto a larger screen or wall
Plotter Printed Prints large-scale designs and graphics
Headphones Audio Provides private audio output

Importance of Output Devices

Output devices are essential for communicating processed information from the computer to
the user. They enable us to:
 View results of our work (e.g., documents on monitors).
 Produce physical copies (e.g., printed documents).
 Hear audio output (e.g., through speakers).
 Share information with larger groups (e.g., projectors).
