"What...? Why did you do that? Do you know?
Tumang is your biological father, and you've
killed your own father."
Honourable judges
Dear ladies and gentlemen
Thank you very much for the opportunity given to me. Let me introduce myself.
I’m Glory Sampurna from Saint Peter Junior High School Jember. Today, I’d like to tell you a
story en(tled “Sangkuriang”. Please, listen a)en(vely
A long (me ago, in a region of West Java, there was a kingdom ruled by a king and queen.
They had one child named Dayang Sumbi. She was very beau(ful and intelligent, but she
was very spoiled. Due to an oath she had made, Dayang Sumbi had to marry a magical dog
named Tumang. Dayang Sumbi and Tumang lived happily and were blessed with a son
named Sangkuriang, who also possessed magical powers like his father. However,
Sangkuriang did not know that Tumang was his father.
One bright day, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuriang and Tumang to go hun(ng in the forest.
Dayang Sumbi: "Sangkuriang, you should go to the forest to hunt. It’s long enough we didn’t
eat heart of a deer. Don't forget to bring Tumang."
Sangkuriang: "Okay, Mom, Tumang and I will find plenty of meat. Let's go, Tumang!"
A1er a long walk, Sangkuriang and Tumang finally arrived at the forest where they usually
hunted.
Sangkuriang: " we usually get a lot of catch here. Come on, Tumang, find the scent of our
prey!"
The day was ge3ng darker, unfortunately, they didn't get any prey at all.
Sangkuriang: "Oh, it's ge3ng dark, but I haven't caught a single animal. If I go back, Mom
will be disappointed. Oh, I know, it would be be)er if I just kill Tumang and bring him home
as my catch."
Sangkuriang aimed his arrow at Tumang and said, “ Forgive me, my loyal dog.” Tumang died.
Sangkuriang took Tumang’s heart and brought it home.
Sangkuriang: "Mom, I got the dead game."
Dayang Sumbi: "Wow, you're so amazing, son. I'm proud to have a child like you."
A1er the feast, Dayang Sumbi began to think about Tumang.
Dayang Sumbi: "Why haven't I seen my husband at all?" (she calls her son) "Sangkuriang..."
Sangkuriang: "Yes, Mom, what's wrong?"
Dayang Sumbi: "Did you see Tumang?"
Sangkuriang: "No... No, I didn't, Mom." (he answered nervously)
Dayang Sumbi: "How can you not see him? Didn't you go to the forest with Tumang earlier?"
Sangkuriang: "Mom, actually, the meat I gave you earlier wasn't deer meat, it was Tumang's
meat."
Dayang Sumbi: "What...? Why did you do that? Do you know? Tumang is your biological
father, and you've killed your own father."
Out of anger, Dayang Sumbi struck Sangkuriang un(l he fainted. As a result of her ac(on,
Dayang Sumbi was banished from the palace.
A few days later, Sangkuriang regained consciousness and said: "Forgive me, Mom, I didn't
mean to do that, I just didn't want to disappoint you. To make up for my mistake, I will go on
a journey and consider the scar on my forehead as your blessing, Mom."
A1er many years of wandering, Sangkuriang met a beau(ful woman. Without hesita(on, he
proposed to her.
Sangkuriang: "Oh, beau(ful lady, what is your name?"
Dayang Sumbi: "My name is Dayang Sumbi."
Sangkuriang: "Dayang Sumbi? Her name reminds me of my mother. Hhmm for sure, they are
different persons. The lady in front of me is so young."
Dayang Sumbi: "If you don't have any other business with me, I should go."
Sangkuriang: "Oh no, please wait. I have something to ask you”
At a sudden, Sangkuriang got down his knee, “Will you marry me?"
Dayang Sumbi felt surprised and answered gladly: "I will be happy to accept your proposal."
Sangkuriang: "Thank you, I am so happy today." (singing)
Three days before their marriage, Dayang Sumbi stroked Sangkuriang’s hair and was shocked
to see the scar on his forehead.
Dayang Sumbi: "Oh... Isn't that the scar from when I struck my son, Sangkuriang?
No, it can't be. I'm about to marry my own son. I must find a way to cancel this marriage!"
(she shouted to herself)
Sangkuriang: "What’s wrong, Dayang Sumbi? Why do you seem troubled?"
Dayang Sumbi: "Sangkuriang, before you marry me, I have one condi(on. You must build a
dam that covers the en(re hill, then build a boat to travel across the dam. You must
complete before dawn."
Sangkuriang remembered that he could summon genies: "Oh, genies surrounding this place,
please help me finish the dam."
The genies then worked to build the dam with soil and mud.
Sangkuriang: "Good, with this, I’m sure I can finish before dawn. I should start making the
boat now. There’s a good tree near the river."
Dayang Sumbi, who felt curious and worried, lurked from distance: "Oh no, what should I
do? It seems Sangkuriang is almost done with the task I gave him. Oh, gods and goddesses,
please help me, make the morning come earlier."
The sun began to rise, Dayang Sumbi could breathe a sigh of relief. A rooster crowed as the
sun rose and Sangkuriang realized he had been tricked.
Sangkuriang: "Dayang Sumbi, you’ve deceived me. It should have been at least half an hour
before dawn."
Dayang Sumbi: "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do that."
Sangkuriang: "Why? I love you so much, but why don’t you want to accept me?"
Dayang Sumbi: "Because I am your mother, Sangkuriang. I know because of the scar on your
forehead."
Sangkuriang: "No, that’s impossible! You’re just making excuses since you won’t marry me.
You’ve made me so angry. I will curse you to die, Dayang Sumbi."
Sangkuriang then cursed Dayang Sumbi and kicked the boat he had made into the middle of
the forest, where it overturned. From that moment on, the place was called Tangkuban
Perahu (upturned boat).
Dear audience, the mythology above tells us several moral values. One of them is related to
moral degrada(on which has become a global issue in the world. Similar to Sangkuriang’s
sins, last week, in Jember, we heard a shocking news about an 18 year old teenager who had
the heart to behead his father just because his father bought a new motorbike that didn't
match his wish. So, Be a person with a good a3tude. Second, this story also reminds us to
think before ac(ng. Be wise and not reckless. The last moral value is always telling the truth.
Be an honest person.
I do hope all of us can make self-reflec(on from the told story. Thank you for the a)en(on.
See you.
